Metal-Smelling Urine in 5 Week Old

I just noticed a few days ago that my 5 week old baby's diapers are now smelling metallic when he urinates - pretty strongly. In fact today he was sitting on my lap and I knew that he had urinated because I smelled that metal smell! What does this mean? He is having plenty of wet diapers per day (7-10) and otherwise seems normal/healthy. Thanks so much for your help!

What can I do next?

If the smell is this strong, I would call the pediatrician's office and ask to have him checked out. Urine smells can be signs of many different things, some totally not a problem (change in diet, not likely for your baby), and others that are serious (type 1 diabetes, though that usually creates a sweet smell). Better to check than to wait and find out something was going on that could have been taken care of earlier if you'd gone to the doctor.

Please....don't fall prey to what happens on Mamapedia all the time-- mamas who post that they "don't want to bother the doctor for nothing" or "don't want to seem like a panicked new mom" etc. This is why the doctor's there and this what insurance is for! We can't diagnose your baby here. It could be something or could be nothing -- and if it is nothing, give thanks. (If it's nothing and your doctor makes you feel bad about coming in to check it out -- find a new doctor!!)

Doctor Time.

Give the nurse a ring for a phone triage. They may want you to come in immediately, or go to urgent care/er... or they may say this is something you can schedule in a few days. Most hospitals have 24/7 nurse advice lines... so you can talk with someone about concerns over nights, weekends, ANYTIME you have a medical question and your peds office isn't open. Heck, I call them when my Peds office IS open, because if they want him seen immediately, I can tell the scheduler that.

I remember reading an article a few months back that talked about diffent urine smells and what the problem might be. I just searched for it and couldn't find it, but I would definitely take your baby in or call his doctor.

Best to bring it to your pediatrician's attention. From what I just read online in several places strong-smelling urine can be a sign of a UTI, even as an infant, and uncircumcised males are more susceptible (not sure if this applies to your son.) Call your doctor and go from there.

I'd be getting your baby to the doctor and have a urine test done, and perhaps even blood work done. I have never smelled that smell from a baby, ever. This bothers me and I really think that you need to get this figured out. Your baby can seem healthy, and then all of a sudden you find out that if you had only known about a deficiency of some sort at the onset of symptoms, you could have averted something bad.

Please take him in.

If your baby is formula fed, it may be a sign that his body is still adjusting to the iron in the formula. Again, just a guess.

Go ahead and ask your pediatrician. Things like this is what they are there for.
