My Granddaughter is on metadate, it is working beautifully. he can concentrate in school and actually watches a movie without jumping around. That is when Mommy gives it to her. She has only been on it a month and a half now and her mommy doesnt give it to her when she isnt in school. Mommy claims she doesnt need it. I know its a daily use and i am afraid that my granddaughter wil get hurt if the mom keeps this up. the med wont have any effectiveness if she gets it for one week then off for a week if she is out of school or on one day and not the next. HELP i am in termoil over this. Does anyone have any advice.

What can I do next?

My son was on Metadate CD for about 3 years. There was no option with taking it. He took it everyday and I think that consistency is something that helped him. Perhaps you can talk to the doctor? I would try to stress with Mom that consistency is key for an ADHD child and this is one small step.

Hello!

This type of medication does not stay in the body and will be eliminated from the body by the end of the day. There are many parents who will not give to their children on their days off from school. But in my experience, my daughter was always getting in trouble with me when she wasn't taking her medication on her days off and I didn't think that was fair to her, so I started giving it to her every day. She is too impulsive without it.

Nicole was taking Metadate CD for years and it is the only medication that she took that I didn't notice any side effects. We were switched to Ritalin SR because of cost but we are now going back to Metadate CD now that we have insurance again.

Good luck!

Deb

I know this is a scary subject for us moms. We want to make sure that we give our children every advantage in life. Attention difficulties effect so many children, and can have harmfull effects on their grades, and self-esteem. Last year my 9 year old daughter was on Metadate for 2 days. She has epilepsy and it triggered her siezures, as all stimulants can do, so we took her off of it. Originally, my Neurologist told me to have her take it on school days, and if I need it on the weekends. The medication leaves their system after the pill is passed, so the only problem would be if she keeps getting in trouble because of her lack of impulse control. My daughter isn't on any meds for her ADHD or ODD at this point. I give my 9 year old and amazing Omega-3 that has helped her, with her brain function. Also, we now use healthier toxin-free products in our home and on our bodies, and that has helped her and her sister with their attentional difficulties immensly! I can't control what they come in contact with outside my home, but I have found that removing the toxins from my home and using products that are made with safer, better quality ingredients, has improved not only our health, but has had impact on so many other aspects of our lives. I would really love to tell you more about what I have done to help my girls. Please email me at ____@____.com.

From a physical standpoint, it's ok that she not take it when she is in school. It is metabolized within a few hours, and she is not trying to maintain a blood level of the medication. Sometimes if the appetite is decreased by metadate, the doctor actually encourages parents to let the child have a 'break' on the weekend so that he will eat more normally on those days. Your granddaughter may not behave as well, but she will not be hurt by having weekends off the med.
