MENOPAUSAL Can't Get the Temperature Comfortable for Long

I need to know what to do about the temperature in my home. I am always turning it up or down and making everybody else uncomfortable. Sometimes I am burning up all night so everybody else can be comfortable but it keeps me awake all night. So far, it hasn't caused my family any "colds or flu" but after awhile, it might cause the thermostat to break! Also, I have been noticing that I have a headache, sometimes for up to two days, when I have my period. For two years, I wasn't able to sleep hardly a wink at night but thank God that has subsided in the past couple of months. My periods have been lighter over the past year or so and the time between them has gotten a little farther apart. I am getting a lot more gray hair but not due to worry. I am not very active physically and my doctor has not put me on any kind of diet, although I am 5'4" and weigh 170 to 175. I am very healthy. No blood pressure and no meds on a regular basis ever. I have worked with my husband during our entire marriage. This year we celebrate 20 years! We have two children, a son age 16 and daughter age 15, which I home schooled for a few years.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

From studying the responses, I have realized something. We are going to do some remodeling of our home so the temperature will be more evenly distributed and constant. I am still not ready to try hormones at this times. Dressing in layers while I am sleeping and awake made great sense to me.

I found if I stopped consuming caffeine (spelling?), that is coffee, tea, chocolate (darn, I miss that the most), I felt much better and my hot/cold cycle calmed down. All you can do is try. G

Hi C.,

I've not gone through menopause either, but I've had friends that have gone or are going through it, and the one thing I noticed is that those who struggled either were doing nothing or were taking a drug (i.e. Premarin) and those who did well were taking herbs.

May I recommend a web-site called www.herbdoc.com. Dr. Schultz has some natural remedies that are specifically for women going through menopause, etc. His catalog is FREE upon request at 1.800.437.2362. The info on his products (and Premarin) is great!!

Flipping the temp in your house will only make matters worse - not only is your body having trouble acclimating internally, but now it's got to acclimate to a changing exterior envirnoment as well! I'd suggest keeping the temp at a comfortable level for all. I have the same but opposite problem, I am always getting freezing spells. I keep my house betw 68-70 and am comfy half the time but FREEZING the other half. I live in my l/s shirts and fleece pants, and always have a fleece either on or wrapped around my waist! Our body's are designed to adjust, sometimes some bodies will just take longer to do so. If I just allow myself to freeze for a bit, I eventually get comfortable. But if I turn the heat on, I'll warm up, then get too hot, then cold again and I seem to be extra sensitive all day. So I'd suggest keeping the temps (where controllable) at a steady temperate and dress in a thin cotton s/s shirt with a l/s shirt over. That way you can shed a layer when you get hot. Be sure to wear cotton as it allows your body to breathe unlike a lot of other fabrics. When you have a "flash" use a magazine or something to fan yourself for a moment. Dont' expect to cool down instantly. Definitely start an exercise routine. A brisk walk in the eve or morning would be great for you as it'd be a nice time to go out in the cold! But just be aware that when you get home you're going to be hot as haiti's, and just plan to sit down and relax and have a popsicle or something and allow your body to re-adjust naturally. :o) When I shed off my clothes to get in the shower, I'm so frozen there is just no way for me to shave. Even under a warm shower, my chickenskin won't go away! So I brought a space heater into the bathroom and put it on high as soon as I wake up so by the time I go to get in the shower, the bathroom is all nice and hot. I thought this was the best plan! But what I found was that I'd be freezing all morning afterwards because of it, and as people would come in at work they'd be like "Hello Little Eskimo!" because I'd be all bundled up freezing, for hours! As soon as I stopped that bath ritual, my mornings at work became normal too. Same thign happened when I started taking extra hot showers - I was just extra cold all day. I wish we could just combine our problems and I could give you some of my cold blood and you could give me some of your hot blood! :o)

This is gonna sound crazy, but if you are getting the headaches around period time you can fix that by adjusting your diet around. Cut out processed foods, cut out fried foods, try to stay off caffiene. Those things work against your body's health. A person can alter their diet and lose ALL symptoms of pms, and I know this is a menopause issue, but it will work the same way. Eating more fish also helps. As for the temperature issue, I would suggest one of those "cool" eye covers they make with the gel in them...you keep them in the fridge and pull them out, well, the body temperature can be swayed by putting one on your eyes and cool you down. Then if you get cold, you can get one of those heating thingys that you put in the microwave.. It is made for muscle pains, but it is warm. That way your family can have one even temperature, and you can adjust yours. I wander around the house ALL the TIME in a house coat (robe) because I am ALWAYS COLD. I have to call it a house coat so my husband wont make fun of me walking around in a robe. lol.
good luck!

Hi C.,

I take a natural supplement and my temperature is fine, all the time, except when I forget it, lol. (My kids don't let that happen much.) I haven't had to inconvenience the family at all and my mood swings have gone away. Before I started taking it, I would be crying one minute, melting down the next, then burning up and sitting outside in shorts. I felt like I was pregnant again without being able to look forward to a new blessing.

If you're interested let me know and I can tell you about it in more detail.

Regards,

M.

Well C. as another female having gone thru those rough times, increase Magnesium, along with a good one a day vitamin. Soy works good (you may notice excess gas bubbles)but it does work. Check out the site on Revival Soy. This is a pretty awesome site. For a long while, I felt like a hot and cold spigot. I believe the soy will be a natural for you and that site provides a lot of good info pertaining to women and they also have a nurse on staff who can answer your questions.

In addition to what's already been stated, you can dress in layers. When you're cold, add a sweatshirt, when your hot, take it off, and your sweater too, and lounge in a tank or cami. I'm usually cold so I always wear a tank top under my shirt, then add a sweatshirt when I get really cold. when I heat up, I can strip one or two layers to cool back down.

C., have you been to your ob/gyn?

Also, you might find that exercise will help your stress/sleeplessness. A fought severe insomnia for over a year and some things that helped was getting out of bed to read until I got tired enough, maybe some milk and a few crackers, a sleep tape to help me unwind, and now I am doing aquatics 3 times a week and love it! I'm not a perfect weight, but this is for me and my body loves the exercise, my energy is much higher and my waist seems to be getting a wee bit smaller. Overall, it's been great for me. I'm 56 and don't deal with to many sweats anymore, but I sure did. I use to go into the car and blast the air conditioner on to be able to do my make-up. My husband complained that he would be Blue soon!

First, I would start with my doctor! Best of luck.

I have not gone through menopause...yet. I sometimes think I am starting, but no. Anyway, I have a great friend that went through it a couple of years ago and tried herbs to help her. I think she used black cohosh, folic acid, a mood blend with St. Johns' Wart, and lots of water. I would do some research and maybe look for a holystic gynocologist. I think the most important is to be good to yourself and understand that this really doesn't last forever.

Good morning,
There are a few things you can do to mitigate your symptoms or get rid of them all together. One folic acid tablet a day, drinking more water, quitting all sodas, eating more fresh fruit and veggies (not canned though), no alcohol, cut down on processed foods, absolutely no artificial sweetners. Those are what caused the migrane headaches I suffered from, I discovered. Much more walking (or the exercise of your choice). I don't have those symptoms anymore, but I did lose more than 10 pounds. I'm about your height, but about 150 lbs and feel a lot better now. (My sister's headaches and hot flashes went away when she cut back to 1 cup of coffee a day and left all artificial sweetners alone.) I'm so excited for you to be willing to do the loving thing for your children & homeschool them. I did too. Now, one is in college. Way to go mom!

Been there ! The problem is not your house's temperature, it is your internal thermometer that is out of whack  What works for me is a natural supplement called ‘Estraval’ that I buy online from a health and wellness company. It has soy, dong quai and black cohosh in it. It has evened out my body temperature so that everyone in the family is comfortable. A great side benefit is that I am also sleeping better.
What you are experiencing is very normal and natural. If you do a search on-line for Menopause, there is a lot of great information out there.

C.,
I felt I needed to share this product with you and others in the responses.

Arbonne International has a wonderful balancing cream that really has helped many of my clientele, including myself (I am post menopausal). It is PhytoProlief or Prolief (my hubby actually using the prolief==his mood swings have gone away and this may also prevent prostate cancer). Both products are botanically based. If you are interested in the products I can get you the product info and ingredients. My medical dr has no issues with my using this. He does recommend a calcium regime to go along with this.

The women that I supply this to will not run out. They love it and some have their hubbys on it. It is in a metered pump and you use it daily.

Let me know if you are interested and I will get the product info to you or anyone that may be interested.

Been there, done that and God bless!!! You will make it through.

My mom finially went into what her DR called full fledged Menopause just last year. Even though she had the hot flashes, mood swings and irratic periods for almost 5yrs!!! I kept tell her he to make him put her on some sort of hormone replacement therapy but she wouldn't listen. He finially did and now she feels like a new woman!! (Go figure at the time your 20 something daughter knew what she was talking about!! hehe) I'd say talk to your DR about what is the best way to go for you. There are medications out there to help lessen the effects of the big M. My mom also tried a few of those OTC things and they really didn't do much for her.

Good luck!! I know I don't have too many more years left till it's my turn if I follow in my mom and G-ma's foot steps!!
