Mediterranean Menu Planning Help Needed

I could really use some help. Recently my daughter's pediatric endocrinologist wants us all to change our diet to the Mediterranean way of eating, which would actually help my husband allot too (he has Barrett's Esophagus and stomach issues). She needs to lose some weight and he said that changing all of our way of eating would be better b/c she's only 7 & to just change her food would be crazy. In the pamphlets he gave my husband it states that this way of eating incorporates lots of vegetables, whole grains and low-glycemic starches, oils such as olive & canola, more fish & chicken, and lots of fruits, nuts and seeds. I'm not the best menu planner so any recipes or recipe assistance would be greatly appreciated. He did recommend meeting with the Dietitian he works with but that appointment isn't for 2 - 3 weeks. I wanted to start with this shopping trip to get us on this style of eating. The sooner the better for my daughter and husband. So I'm trying to see what I can find out before we meet with the dietitian.

Thank You,
J.

Ironically, I was speaking with my dad tonight and he told me that he had just come from Barnes and Noble where he bought a book about the Mediterranean Diet. He is diabetic and his doctor recommended it. I am sure it will give you lots of recipes and useful advice. Good luck!

Something to take into consideration - there are several different kinds of Mediterranean cuisines (Greek, Northern Italian/Southern Italian, etc). Northern Italy has a much different kind of approach to their cuisine than southern Italy (which is more fish, olive based).

Does the pediatric endocrinologist work with a Dietician? I'm sure they would have access to many different sites/cookbooks that would help point you in the right direction.

As someone from Southern Italy, this is the first time I've ever heard of this diet being low in glycemic starches. Despite all my years in Diabetes, I'm not an Endocrinologist and haven't seen this most recent data.

Also look at the Mediteranean Diet Book. You will get a ton of recipes...I would bet they have just a cookbook that you can get that is not centered on the weight loss aspect. You are going to love eating this way! It may be hard at first but you will find yourself craving the healthy foods and feeling the (yucky)difference when you eat food with refined sugars, wheats, etc.

Hi, J.:

Go to your nearest Mediterrnean deli or restaurant. Ask the owner for some help.
I bet they will be glad to help you plan your menus and teach you what you need to know.

Good luck. D.

Look at the South Beach Diet books. They are Mediterranean based. You don't have to follow the diet by any means, but they all have recipes in the back that are actually really good! Good luck!
