My son's latest obsession is bows and arrows, so we've decided to throw him a Medieval themed birthday party. The cake will be in the shape of a dragon (found a cute design online) and we'll have (suction cup) archery target practice as one of the games, but what else can I do to add to the theme? What food should I serve? Fun decoration ideas? Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

Thanks so much for the wealth of ideas! Thanks to you guys, I'm getting exciting about planning this party! :D

Do you have a Medieval Times near you? Or something of the like? I know there's a few. That might be the best way to do it! And the age is perfect. (Although we just went for a 34 yr old birthday too... :) )

Do you want it to be more realistic or more fantasy oriented? You could arrange a little quest/treasure hunt leading them through a couple of challenges (age appropriate of course) to end fighting a dragon, or some sort of Robin Hood story if that resonates better with your child. The kids could either be a group of knights or Robin Hood and his Merry Kids...

Or, you could have them design coats of arms on blank shields and have some sort of tournament (though be careful about things with winners and losers at this age)

Pin the tail on the dragon is always good.

What a fun theme! What about Pin the Helmet on the Knight? you could have something where the kids drop mini dragons into a bucket and see how many they get into it. You could even decorate the bucket like a castle. Make simple clues and have them go on a "quest' for a treasure. Make crowns and/or shields and let them decorate them. Michaels often has inepensive wooden cut outs that they could decorate as well. you could use broomsticks and attatch cardboard horse heads to them for a "galloping" race.

I know they have dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets. Maybe you could call them dragons :) You could do hotdogs and call them Dragon Tails, especially if you wrap them in crescent rolls then bake them. If you can find a big piece of cardboard and feel REALLY creative, you could draw a knight with the pace cut out and take their pictures. It would be cute to print them with "Thank you" on them to send as thank you notes after. You can add text at most stores when you print photos. Cutting out shields from cardboard and covering with foil would also be a fun thing to hang up as decorations. Maybe make some kind of a crest that incorperates your son'd name and/or interests.

Most of all, just enjoy! The kids will have a great time no matter what you do. The parents are always the ones that stress! :)

You can use Goblets instead of regular cups. Anything fantasy...dragon, wizards, castles, etc.

Michael's at one point had dragon/knight stickerbooks. I used one sheet per kid at my daughter's party.

You can get or make a broomstick horse and have relay races. Or have a candy cane horse be given to each kid. I couldn't find a better picture, but the one I had as a kid was just felt with a little fringe down the back and a bit of ribbon for the reins. http://ebogie.blogspot.com/2008/11/animal-candy-cane-hold...

You can serve apples (William Tell). Consider kaiser rolls or other large chunks of bread and cubed meat and cheese and letting the kids eat with their hands because it's more accurate. Or you can also do baked chicken legs (vs turkey legs).

If you know how many kids are coming, get some plain cloth and let them use puffy paints to make up tabards (just rectangles with a hole for the head) for their chosen "knightness". Or if he loves archery, maybe go more Robin Hood and get green and some inexpensive cording so each kid can be a Merry Man.

If you can't find the swords at Target in the $1 bin (where they also had shields for a time) try a Five Below store.

Goose. But most of the children won't have the taste for it. Venison or sausages. Then there are cheeses which have been in use since medieval times.
Go online to the Renaissance Faire and see what you can find there.

for food, I always think of those big turkey drumsticks, but for kids you could do chicken drumsticks.
I'm sure you could come up with some castle decorations...either make some castle walls out of cardboard, or get some from a party store.
