I'm looking for some new ideas on administering medicine to my 2 year old. She has decided that she hates any kind of medicine no matter the flavor and giving it to her has become a 2 man job. If anyone has any clever ideas I'd love to hear them!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone that responded! I tried several of the ideas thrown my way and there was one that won by a landslide...putting the medicine in chocolate pudding. My daughter never even knew it was in there and gobbled it right up.
Thanks again to everyone.

I mix it with a little bit of jelly and spread it on toast. Or I'll mix it in with a quarter of a sippy cup of juice.

Hi P.,
I have been going through the same thing lately. I resorted to putting the medication dose in my son's (juice)sippie cup when he's not looking. Don't fill the whole cup with juice though. Your child may not drink the whole thing.Everything else failed for me...this is what works for us. Good luck.

My 1 yr old is the same way. I usually mix it in with some applesauce (just enough to cover the taste) right before or during meal/snack time. I just make sure he is not full when I give it to him and it works like a charm.

We use the shot squirty things my daughter loves taking it that way but if by chance she fights us on it we put it in a small med cup mix it with some sort of juice and let her drink it with a small straw works every time.

Hi P.,
We used to have problems with giving medicine as well. Some things, like Tylenol, are also in quick dissolve pills. He seemed to like the bubble gum flavor. I think Triaminic also makes them for a cold.

You can ask about putting the medicine in a spoon of chocolate pudding. That seems to work as well. Some pharmacies will make the medicine into lollipops.

Good luck!

You may have tried this already, but my 2 year old went through the same thing. What worked for him was to try different kinds of medicine cups. He mainly would choose the kind that's just like a little cup or the kind that is a spoon with the tube handle that measures the medicine. He would primarily refuse the droppers and syringe style medicine things. Don't know if that helps you, but that's what worked for our 2 year old. The novelty of a different kind of way to take it. :)

WHEN MY SON WAS 2, HE DID NOT LIKE TAKING MEDICINE EITHER SO I USED TO GIVE IT TO HIM IN HIS JUICE. TRY A HARD JUICE. FOR EXAMPLE GRAPE. ONE WHERE THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO TASTE THE MEDICINE.

I put my sons medicine in raspberry sherbet, it hides the taste of the medicine and he loves it.

Hi P.,

I went through the same thing with my son. He's 2 1/2 now but a while back he decided no matter what it was he wasn't having anything to do with it. I literally had to lay in on the ground and then straddle him so my legs would hold his arms down then I could use one hand to pry open is mouth and the other to dispense the medicine. It got to the point when I was getting more worked up then him so I just started talking to him about it. Tellin him what it was for and telling him I need him to be a big boy and do it for mommy and for some reason just talking to him helped. Now he doesn't give me a problem at all. I just tell him it's time to take his medicine and he does it. Sometimes I had to threaten him with going to his room or taking a toy away if he didn't take it and that worked to but it's much nicer to just be able to talk to him about it. I don't know if this will work for you, but I hope so!! Good luck and let me know when you find something that helps!!!

Several things- you could crush the medicine, if crushable, in applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. You could also try the Melt-Away tablets if it's Tylenol or something like that- my son loves it. It's like Vitamins. Does your child like Vitamins? The other thing you could do is give it to her and have it be her choice. IF she wants to do x, she needs to take the medicine. Or chocolate as a reward always works! :) Good luck!

Hi P.,

I am not yet a Mom(in about 3 weeks that will change!). I am a nurse, however. Just an idea...have you tried mixing meds with a non-acidic drink mix(kool-aid or something) and freezing it into "pops"(popsicles) offering it as a treat rather than medicine? Another idea is what nurses do frequently~add it to applesauce or yogurt. Best of luck! ~K., R.N.
