Medela Breast Pump Needed

Hey moms, my sister just had a baby on Friday. She has to go back to work by Halloween due to financial reasons. She is trying to breastfeed, but is unable to afford an electric breast pump. She has a manual one, but she's afraid when she has to go back to work she won't be able to pump completely during her 15 minute breaks. I was wanting to know if anyone out there would have one they would be willing to give her or maybe sell at a low price. Or if anyone knows of a place where she can get one, I would appreciate the advice!

What can I do next?

I have just stopped using my Medela pump in style and would be willing to sell it. I am the only user and I have a bunch of extras. I bought it for around $300 plus the extras, so I would like $175 for all. I have the carrying case with a wall plug & a battery pack for on the go. I have 4 breast shield pump things, about 8 containers with the portable cooler and ice pack that fits in the carrying case. It is awesome and allowed me to breast feed both of my children for almost a year each. I didn't know WIC gave breastpumps, but I was able to use them for the extra help a year ago, so I highly recommend that too.

Congrats Auntie! Let me know if you would like it.

There was an Oprah show about an organization that gives you a breast pump if you donate some of your milk to Orphans in Africa. Maybe it is still on the Oprah website.

YES I second the mom who said to contact WIC. Their breastpumps are hospital grade. Plus there will be a nurse available to help her learn how to use it. WIC is such a great program - if your sister qualifies she should definitely look into it.

Hi M.,

I have an electric breast pump, but it is not a Medela, I paid $50.00 for it but it was never used so obviously it is still in box and it is in excellent condition. I will sell it for $25.00 which is half of what I paid. Please call me if you are interested. ###-###-####. I live in Grand Prairie

I own one but my cousin borrowed it, she is finished with it and says it still works great. I would be willing to give it to you if she doesn't mind that two people have used it. It is a few years old but still works fine. I do suggest replacing the cups and anything the milk touched. Call me ###-###-#### if you are interested, I live in Hurst and my cousin lives in Burleson.

If nothing else has worked, you might also ask at the hospital where she delivered the baby. Our doctor once told us that you can rent a pump from your hospital for "pennies a day."

I tried to sell one at a garage sale this weekend for $30; it didn't sell.
Let me know what you think.

Hello,
I just sold a Medela breast pump on www.Craigslist.com. When I listed it, I noticed a number of other breast pumps for sale, some by Medela and some by other brands. That might be a good place for your sister to start looking. I listed my pump on the baby items section of Craigslist. Good luck!

Is she eligible for WIC? They give you one for free! It is awesome! Try that.

I have one she can have. It is 6 years old and has served 2 kids but it was still working when I stopped pumping. I have all the parts but I would recomend getting a new kit (all the tubes & stuff-you can get it at Babies R Us for not too much). I also have a car adapter which came in handy when there was no where to pump. I live in Fort Worth. If you are interested send me a message and I will give you my phone #.

try calling the la leche league to find out if she can rent/borrow one

also when i was bf i had more success with hand expressing than with a manual pump just because i could massage the area & stimulate it more than a manual pump.

also try looking on craigslist just make sure she uses new cups & tubes (basically anything that might come in direct contact with the milk)

Hi M., I understand your sister's financial situation, I had a preemie born 10 weeks early, by the time I got him home from the NICU, I had one week before I had to go to work! I found a lady in Grapevine (through a web search) that rents hospital grade pumps for around $40-50 a month. It's been three years since I used her, but she had been in business a long time, she is a lacation nurse. I don't know her name, but she is in Grapevine, maybe do a "lacation nurse" search and see what you can find.

Good luck and congratulations!

If she's financially strapped, then she likely qualifies for WIC. They will provide her with a pump. She still has 2 problems though.

1)Assuming she is not already on WIC, she will have to schedule an appointment to verify qualification. This is not likely to happen in the next 10 days.

2)It is not advisable to use an electric pump in the first 3 weeks after birth. I was told to hand express, which as someone mentioned previously, is best at getting all the areas "worked out."

I have twins and nursed exclusively- they never had formula out of a bottle. I went back to work full time when my girls were 6 weeks old. When it's time to express, that milk just comes gushing out. I could hand express 4 oz bottles in minutes.

best of luck!
