Mastitis and Low Supply

Hi Ladies! I am recovering from Mastitis and feeling much better. My breast pain was bearable and I've been able to nurse on the breast a lot. However, my supply has seemed low yesterday and today. During the first day I was throwing up and having a fever, etc. Is my supply lower because I was throwing up? It's been a few days and yesterday and today I have been eating well and drinking lots of water and my supply just began decreasing yesterday. Is this normal for mastitis? Should it be better in a few days? My daughter is doing good but eating much more frequently and seems a little frustrated sometimes. The constant nursing doesn't seem to be helping yet but I hope it goes up again soon! I am able to be very relaxed about it since she is still doing okay which is good that I don't get stressed and lower my milk that way, but I am worried if it gets any lower she will be too hungry. Is this normal? Did it happen to you? How long until your supply came back? Thanks ladies!

Drink healthy nursing tea by secrets of tea. It will naturally boost your low flow of milk. I have done this with great success.

Poor thing, I feel your pain, I was there one. You can buy lactation tea or you can buy fenugreek, look it up online, I popped those things and it really helped. They sell it everywhere, drugstores, healthfood. Hang in there!

No fun... I'm so sorry! I had mastitis on one side and, unfortunately, my milk supply on that side just never seemed the same. I tried Fenugreek and my doctor even prescribed Reglan for just a few months to boost my supply and to make sure my daughter didn't start rejecting that side because of no milk. The prescription helped tremendously... Good luck to you!

Assuming she's eating some solid foods, there is no need to worry. One thing you could do is set aside a day or part of a day to mostly stay in bed with her, skin to skin (turn up the heat!), to help bring your supply back up. You should be fine soon.

Just make sure to breastfeed often or pump alot. Even overnight. I got low milk supply and mine never really came back until I started using Breastea. Breastea is GREAT. I saw an increase in my milk supply overnight. You have to order it from breastea.com. Whatever you do though don't skip any feedings or pumpings.

I see that your daughter is about 7 months old? Is she eating solids yet? I have to say that I found my supply decreasing around that age, without even being sick.
It was the same time that I also went back to work, so I pumped for her daycare - and was always afraid I didn't have enough.
Long story short - it turned out it was exactly enough for her, both for daycare and home and I never actually had to supplement. I never FELT like I did in the first 6 months, like a had a bunch of milk, but my daughter was growing fine.
I would say just keep on doing what you are, maybe add some nursing tea that contains fenugreek. I drank that a lot, not sure if the fenugreek helped, but it certainly helped my fluid intake. I did end up nursing until 19 mo.

Hello S.-

I've know several Moms who have had low milk supply for various reasons. I've recommended Lactation Tea, you can get it at a health food store or Rite Aid. Everyone has had good luck with it.

Good Luck!

I had mastitis when my daughter was 8 months old. My supply never recovered from it but I was also having gallbladder attacks and had trouble getting enough calories. My guess is your bought of mastitis came at a growth spurt and just keep nursing on demand. Your supply should meet demand in a few days or a week or so.

Being sick and under stress can affect your supply, but should only last for a few days. Still the more you nurse the more milk you will have. Try to relax, and I am sure tea would help. I wouldn't worry unless it is for more than a week.

maybe that will help.
