Mascara & Blush Question

Hello,

I had a baby girl 6 months ago. I have just finished going through the hair loss phase (in clumps). My skin is now breaking out. It only seems to be in the areas where I wear blush. I use bobbi brown, but I have to admit, it's old. Could it be my hormones or does blush go bad?

Mascara....I'm looking for a mascara that will extend my lashes. I've used Lancome & Estee Lauder in the past but they are so expensive. Any drug store brands anyone likes?

What can I do next?

Hi!
Oh I feel for you on the hair coming out in clumps! That happened to me and it is just starting to grow back a little. I'm a big fan of Lancome but now only buy the compact powder b/c yes it is sooo expensive. I've tried several mascaras that I think are good substitutes: Revlon and Almay are the brands I like. Both brands don't run and the Revlon one especially looks good even the next day if you are too tired to wash it off!

Hi L.,

The cheek thing could be rosaia (sp?). I got this after I had my son 4 years ago - have no idea why. If it continues, maybe go see a dermatologist to determine what, if anything you can do about it.

Also, Maybelline great lash is a nice one!!

Not sure about the makeup question...I too use it for a long time.
However...I have been using the otherversion of proavtive, you can get it at Costco and I think I saw it at Walmart..and I can't think of the name right now, but it has done wonders for my skin! I love it

Hi L.,
Congratulations on your baby girl!

It totally could be a combination of make-up going bad and your hormones. I have an 8 month old and my body is still going through goofy things (isn't motherhood fun!?).

I don't use a drug store brand, but I do use Shaklee. It is less than the dept store brands that you mentioned, but a better quality. You may have heard in the news about how some personal care products have some shady ingredients that aren't so great to be putting on your skin.

I have some information if you'd like to hear more.

How often (if ever) do you wash your blush brush, or any make-up brushes? They can hold bacteria. I like Maybelline Sky-High Curves mascara.

I like blush by clinique. It is a little expensive but it lasts forever. Mascara my favorite is loreal lash out for about $7 at the store.

They do say makeup goes bad. I think blush, especially, because of the oils that get re-introduced by your brush. You can clean your brush, that might help. And as for mascara, I always read that makeup artists love Maybelline Great Lash (in the pink and green tube) in the dark brown shade - not black. It's cheap and I really like it to. I don't know if it "extends" the lashes, but it's a good product.

Yes, makeup has an expiration date. Different kinds should be thrown out at different times, so you may want to research makeup expiration dates on line. I think blush is about 6 months. You could try washing your makeup brushes or apply makeup with a sponge. Make sure you throw the sponge away after a couple of weeks and use a new one.
That being said, I do think that hormones/body changes from pregnancy do throw your system out of whack. Some people who never break out start to break out after pregnancy/stop breastfeeding. You can try to use some OTC acne medication and see if that helps.
As far as makeup goes, I really like Beauticontrol. I like it so much that I actually became a consultant for the discount. Their blush is nice because it is not real powdery, like store brands. I hate it when you put your brush on the blush and blush gets everywhere. That won't happen with Beauticontrol. They make great mascara, and other spa/makeup products. Check it out at Beauticontrol.net. If you have any questions, you can send me a message on this site.

Hi L.,

I am not an esthitician or dermatologist but I did see on television on 2 different programs were it was said that all make-up should be tossed after 12 mos due to the bacteria that grows in it, which will lead to break outs and dust mites in your eye lashes and eye brows where you actually have to take a antibiotic to get rid of. I am a beauty consultant and do have a product that helps get rid of and helps prevent the dust mites as well as our mascara is awesome, it doesn't clump up and it actually lenghtens your lashes you can email me or go on my website and look into the products yourself and then contact me with any questions. www.marykay.com/denisedub.

Yes, blush can go stale but your skin pH may be different now and reacting to things in a different way than you did before you were pregnant. You should try a mineral based blush like Bare Essentials or maybe even Physicians Formula (I haven't tried Physicians though). There are also a lot of lines that make sensitive skin formulas.
As far as mascara is concerned, I have read a bazillion times that the Great Lash mascara by Maybelline is the best and make-up pros use it all of the time - I read there's something like 1 sold every 2 seconds. Personally I don't care for the wand and have used a lash brush with it, but the product itself is nice and it's about $7 and you can always find it on sale or coupons for it.
If you are still having problems, I LOVE my dermatologist - Dr. Roberta Lucas at Northwestern Physicians Group in Chicago at 310 W Superior. 312.926.DOCS - Good luck!!

As a mascara I use Lancome Voluminous. I love it, at one point I thought I was obsessed with that mascara and started trying others, but I went back to my Voluminous. Your hormones may still be going haywire, I doubt it is the blush especially if you've used it before and nothing happened.

Hi L.,
I know your request went out some time ago but I was browsing and came across your request. If you are still interested, I had the same problem after my second child and I do believe it was hormones. I think it was the pregancy and my age(38) At any rate, I saw a dermatologist and purchased her skin care line. Nice but expensive! Then I saw a cosmotologist and she had a couple of different skin care lines, one was MaryKay Cosmetics. I tried it and it was great with a really great price. I have been using it ever since and now sell it. I am in the northwest suburbs and frequent downtown because I am also an interior designer who goes to the Merchandise Mart. I keep a large inventory of skin care and cosemetics and have lots of samples. The really nice thing about MaryKay, besides the above mentioned things, is if the product does not work for you we will exchange it or give you a full refund. I would be happy to let you try any products for a few weeks to see how it works for you. Just let me know and good luck. S.

Loreal voluminous is awesome. It is usually $4 or so at Ulta and $7 at the grocery. I only use one coat and the results are amazing! I also use some bobbi brown items and love them. However, as others have said, not only does makeup go bad but your hormones change, too. Not sure if this is true or not, but my mom has always told me that our body chemistry changes every seven years or so. Something that worked for years will sometimes just stop, you know? Well, I don't know about you but I loooove buying new makeup so have fun!

Hi L.,

I don't necessesarily think the blush is bad. You might want to try washing your makeup brushes. Because the blush is a powder, I doubt it is the cause of your breakouts. Wash your brushes in a little water and dishsoap. See if that helps.

Also, it does take a very long time for your hormones to settle back to normal. You might want to try cetephil cleanser. It is very mild. With the weather being so crazy these days, along with the stress of a new baby, you've got lots of reasons for breakouts!

good luck.

My husband (of all people) read somewhere that you should just replace all of your makeup once a year. Not only will some of them go bad over time, but others will just get "dirty" no matter how many times you might wash out the brush blush or other applicators, and then you are just spreading that back onto your face later on. Most things have around a year of shelf-life. I'd replace the blush. No clue on what to tell you on the mascara though - I rarely use the stuff with my itchy, allergy eyes. hehe.
