Has anyone ever sewed their own onesies? I would like to try and was wondering if anyone has a pattern to make a basic onesie. I can't find one anywhere online... Thanks!

What can I do next?

As an experienced seamstress, I can say that this may be a fun idea if you have some experience. I would not reccommend onsies as your first project. One big problem is the size of the arm holes. They are extremely small and frusterating if you dont know what you are doing. I also agree with the previous answers that this will not be a good way to save money. There are tools you need to not only sew the fabric correctly (certain types of needles for your machine, for example) but to set in the snaps correctly as well. Now there are ways to save money. Joanns often gives 50% off coupons in their flyiers and in the sunday paper. This is a good way to save $$ on the fabric. I did some checking on patterns and I personally like Mccalls best because there is a lot more ease in the patterns and they tend to be simpler. I would look at Mccalls pattern 8574 if you are really interested, but again look for your fabric stores to have sales ($1-$2 for a pattern rather than $15-$20). Good luck, and ask me any questions you may need help with, I am glad to help!

I agree with the previous post, that if your expectation is that sewing will save money, you may be disappointed. However, if you enjoy sewing (and this is not your project) you may like sewing these.

I believe that I used a Kwik Sew pattern when my kids were young. Fabric stores that carry knit fabrics (the recommended fabric for onesies) will carry that brand of patterns. Or you could create your own pattern by cutting a onsie apart as was suggested.

I hope that you are able to find what you need to do this. I had a great time sewing for my kids.

i tried making my own one-piece pj's for my baby and all the materials turned out to be the same price as buying them. i thought it would be fun anyway to use something i'd made myself, but it turned out to take so much time that it wasn't really worth it in the end. so if you're wanting to sew onesies to save money, you probably won't. but if you're doing it for fun or a meaningful gift or bonding, like i was, i suggest using a VERY simple pattern if you find any. or you can just get a onesie and cut it apart to make your own pattern.
