Make-up and Perfume and Whitening, Oh My...

Hello! I usually ask questions about my children, but this time it's for me. I've never been a particulary "girly-girl" person, but I've recently lost quite a bit of weight and would like to make a little more of an effort to go along with it. So, I have three questions combined into one this morning.

1.) What's your favorite mascara, water-proof or otherwise? I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so the milder the better!

2.) What's your favorite perfume or scent? The brand and where to find it!

3.) Have you tried a successful method of teeth whitening that you liked and would recommend?

Thanks for any advice you can give to this tomboy mommy!

I think it's great that you want to freshen things up now that you lost some weight! I don't wear a lot of perfume but I like Banana Republic "Alabaster". It's feminine and not heavy. For Mascara, I like Mabeline waterproof. Lash Stiletto is great As for teeth whitening, I use Colgate "Optic White" and I thought it works better than Crest "3D White". Spend a little extra time gently brushing the fronta ns you will see a result quickly without the expense and sensitivity.

1. I switch between L'Oreal Voluminous which might be too harsh for you & Almay which should work just fine. I do use waterproof, but only because I get allergies which make me sneeze & have watery eyes sometimes so I don't need the black smudges that come with non-waterproof

2. I have a lot of body splashes from Bath & Body Works, inexpensive way to see what I like with my own body chemistry. For actual perfume, my favorite is Burberry Brit & you can get it at any department store

3. Teeth whitening makes my teeth too sensitive to cold so I just use a whitening toothpaste. Can't help you with that one, sorry.

I use super shock mascara from Avon. It's not thick or clumpy but makes my thin short lashes look really long. It comes off easy with Maybeline eye makeup remover. It's not waterproof but I like using makeup remover. It leaves my eyes softer and I dont have to rub my eyes like you do with face soap.

I like the Hawaian Ginger body spray and lotion from Calgon. They sell it in the bath and body section of the store. It's less than $10 and it is fresh, clean, and pretty. Not all perfumey and heavy. I really hate those women you can smell before you see them! OOO and being stuck in the elevator with them!

I bought a whitening kit that comes with a teeth trays, a syringe of whitener, a syringe of reminerilzation, and a blue led light. It was $40 on here and I saw it $28 somewhere online. It has made a HUGE differance. You're supposed to use it for 7 days. After 4 days I was completely satisfied and put the rest away. Also, Crest 3D White toothpaste and mouthwash was given a lot of awards and accolades for whitening.

Nest, get some self tanning lotion. Jergens makes a moisturizer that you put on every other day and it gives a nice subtle glow.

What fun that you are trying new looks and new products! Here's my two cents:
1) ColorGirl Lash Blast (the orange tube) and L'oreal Voluminous Lash

2) Ed Hardy's basic fragrance for women - Ulta or online

3) Every time I try teeth whitening stuff my teeth become more sensitive. So I guess I have to focus more on having a sparkling personality. = )

Good luck to you! Hope you find a look that is all your own and one that makes you feel attractive!

First off Conratulations on the weight loss!! This is a battle in it's own! Kuddo's to you!

I am a girl that loves make up and perfume some may say I have an addiction! lol I do not!

Make-Up: I use Elf which I know you can purchase at Target, Kmart and some Hy-Vees good way to get your brushes. All is $3 and under awesome make up, I have never had a problem and before that I always used sheer coverage Mineral Make up. You can also purchase it online (more products online). I use the mositurizer tint as my base and then I use the golden bronzer as powder total cost $6. Like I said everything is $3 and under. I do spend on the mascara though and the best drug store brand is L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes or Voluminous Million Lashes and I have sensitve eyes to mascara and never a problem and looks awesome. I do get eyeshadows and lip gloss at Victoria secret love Victoria Secret lipgloss they have good make up too.

Perfume - Victoria Secret has awesome scents I have SO many and everyone I get complemented on them. If you get the mini mist they are like $10 you can not go wrong and they last all day and fit in your purse!
My favorite Victoria Secret are Gorgeous, Unbelieveable, Tease (Black), Tease (Sexy little things), Very Sexy Red, Very Sexy Summer, Pink. Can not go wrong for $10!

Expensive Perfume Favs - Calvin Klein Eternity and Euphoria, Promesse by Cacheral, Estee Lauder Beautiful Sheer and Sensous, Viva La Juicy, Gucci Guilty, Escada Into the Blue, and you can get some of these at Kohls cheaper than Department Stores.

Teeth Whitening - I got the Crest strips from my dentist for $ 50 and worked awesome.

Can I say hair care - Kenra is the best for products, Hot spray when straightening and Curling and the hairspray is good too.

Also like another poster said self tanner good too!

Good luck and again Congrats!!!!

I use Lancome mascara and love it.

Teeth whitening: I had molds of my teeth and trays made at the dentist and was given syringes of teeth whitener called "Opulescence." I am SO happy with it! I use the strongest formula (think it's 30%) once or twice a year. Just put a little in the the trays and leave in your mouth for 30 short minutes every night for as many nights as you like. Usually I'm super happy after only a couple nights, and the results stay for many months, up to a year. I've never been happier with my teeth!:)

Good luck!

First off I use Cover girl Washable Waterproof mascara, and I love it. Second for teeth whitening I use bakingsoda everyday & perioxide. I think that perfume smells different on everyone that you have to find your own scent. Good Luck to you.

I love ELF mascara you can get it online at elf.com or most targets carry the brand. Plus it is very inexpensive.

My fav perfumes, Vera Wang, Romance-Calvin Klein, Envy Me-Gucci, Be Delicious-DKNY, Light Blue Dolce and Gabana, Black-Kenneth Cole--just to name a few. I have more if you would like to know any others. You can get them at any department store. I have also smelled Chance-Channel but have never owned it.

I would also like to know about the teeth whitening.

Self tanner is definitely a girls best friend :) I'm a makeup junkie! My ultimate favorite mascara is Dior show, but it's expensive. Not sure about te sensitive eye part, but if you buy at Walgreens and a few other stores you can return a product if it irritates you. Almay has a decent 3 in 1 mascara for sensitive eyes, it lengthens, thickens, and curls. Otherwise I like loreal voluminous or voluminous million lashes, and maybelline falsies flared. Perfumes I prefer florals and like sjp NYC, Clinique happy, Dior be delicious, d&g light blue, philosophy amazing grace, and many of the scents at Victoria's secret. White strips are the best for home whitening. Congrats on the weight loss! I say head to sephora or Ulta to smell different perfumes and try on some makeup!

Enjoy experimenting on the girly side and congrats on a new, healthier you after your weight loss.
Mascara - I use Maybelline's Lash Stiletto. I go for length rather than volume, and I don't use waterproof.
I wear different perfumes, but my favorite is Sung by Alfred Sung. I've worn it for over 20 years (but I wear other perfumes too - these days on the tray in my bedroom, I have Cool Water, GLo, Lady Million...). You can get these in department stores, sometimes in places like Marshalls or Kohls, online (try Amazon if you're looking for a specific perfume!) or myperfumesamples.com if you want to order samples for a couple of bucks each to try different scents before committing to one.
I've never done whitening, but I would love to. I drink a lot of tea.

Good luck!

1) Mary Kay "ultimate" mascara. I have super sensitive skin as well. My neighbor sells MK and I actually really love their products- little nicer than CVS, but not quite "make up counter". I don't use the waterproof stuff b/c it is difficult to take off at night, but this one is really resillient!

2) Donna Karan "Cashmere". I love the smell (light and citrusy) and it doesn't make me sneeze or itch!

3) Crest whitestrips (the actual brand, not the generic versions). This actually came from my dentist. We were considering the professional whitening and he said that these were the best unless we were willing to give-up foods and drinks with color (red wine, coffee, tea, ketchup, etc).

Good for you!

Congratulations on your weight loss! What fun to turn a new page and do something different for yourself.

When you hear of a fragrance that interests you, don't go out and spend money on it right away. Go where you can find a tester (department store or drug store), and try it out. What may be great on somebody else may or may not be great on you. Give the scent a free trial run before you buy.

I use Clinique mascara, and I, too, prefer the whitening toothpaste over the other methods.

I don't use much makeup, so can't help you there, but I implore you and other moms to be aware that as much as 10% of the population, including children, are sensitive to artificial scents in perfumes, cologne, air "fresheners," etc., and can become quite ill (headache, nausea, breathing problems, dizziness and confusion, sleep disturbances, and much more) when exposed to perfumed products.

When using scent, please know that you'll stop smelling it long before it stops reaching un-numbed noses, so it probably does not need refreshing as often as most people believe. And please, PLEASE, be moderate in using it. If somebody who gets within two feet of you can smell it, that's quite enough. Otherwise, your scent will be battling other big scents worn by other people, and making the local atmosphere uninhabitable for sensitive people.

I have repeatedly been forced to leave my place in bank and grocery lines, leave restaurants and theaters, and avoid weddings and funerals altogether because of the amount of scent people seem compelled to wear. And then I still feel sick for a day or two. My social freedoms are severely restricted by other people's freedom to express themselves through fragrance. There's got to be a balance in there somewhere.
