Low dopamine also means that one can be susceptable to depression. Also lack of socialization, emotions, isolation from others, and difficulty with concentration/multi tasking. He might have great focus in one thing, such as a computer game, but if he has to clean his room or concentrate on homework-things like that, he may struggle from completing those specific tasks. He may also have difficulty with switching from one activity to another.

Your doctor is correct. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger located in the brain. It has a wide array of functions, one of which is playing a role in pleasure/satisfaction area of the brain. Low levels can cause depression, poor attention, cravings, compulsions and addictions. There are many things that can cause low dopamine levels including stress, lack of sleep, drug use, some antidpressants, and diet. There are also simple things you can do to increase dopamine levels in the brain, such as exercise and making dietary changes. HTH!

Unless your doctor has run tests on your son, he has NO way of knowing if your son's dopamine levels are low. I would not jump to ANY conclusions based on that statement.

If your son has the concentration to "spend hours on the computer", I would make sure he is doing something constructive with that time. Have him learn to program computers, and he'll have great career opportunities ahead of him.

Sorry this sounds so simplistic but just google it and see what you can come up with. Google is always my "go to" for information. My 11 yr. old son also has incredible concentration on things he's extremely interested in. Isn't that sort of "normal" for an 11 yr. old boy?? Just make sure he's balanced with outside things and has limits on his screen time. Did this Dr. do tests? Sounds like a strange "off the cuff" diagnosis....
