Low-key Summer Family Getaway Suggestions?

I was curious if anyone could recommend summer getaway destinations within an easy drive from Northern NJ for a family vacation, preferably somewhere not too commercial with accommodations including a little kitchen and separate room where baby can go to bed early and Mom & Dad can stay up late. We were thinking about the shore or somewhere near a lake, but would possibly go for somewhere with a fantastic pool.

I would suggest Great Wolf Lodge in either the Poconos or Niagra Falls. The Falls will be a farther drive ( about 5-6 hours) ,but there is tons to do around there. The Poconos also offers a great choice and is much closer. The Lodge has Family Suites that have a separate room for the kids. As a TA for nearly 8 years, I get requests like this all the time. The lodge has an amazing indoor pool with something for everyone. Even if the weather is not so good outside, you can use the pool inside. They have an outdoor pool in the Summer too. There are some great restaurants int eh area and outlets for some shopping for Mom. Your son is a little young for rating but when he gets a few years older, there is easy rafting in the area too.

Just my two cents.

Hi C.,

I would definitely recommend Lake George, NY. We have a very close family, and all went last year on the recommendation of a cousin who had been going for the last few years. It was my immediate family, cousins w/ their children, my two aunts, an uncle, my parents, my sister and her family, etc. We all had such a wonderful time, we are in the planning stages of our trip back to the lake next year. There are many places to stay in the Lake George area, so you are sure to find something that fits any budget. We stayed in a resort where you could either choose a motel-type room, full apartments (we stayed in a four bedroom apartment with other family members w/ full kitchen, living room, etc), or small cabins. On the premises there were two pools, one for adults (deeper) and one for kids (about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 feet deep), and we were real close to the lake as well. It was a great family vacation for the kids and adults. We had children there ranging from my youngest, who was 3 mos at the time, to my cousin's son who was 6... and four other kids within that age range too. There are many things to do and see if you take short drives, or you can just enjoy the lake and towns that surround it.

Happy vacationing!

The suites at Hershey is nice-they are pricey but you can always do a time share presentation to cut down on the costs. Also, Cape May is very nice.

We LOVE the Jersey shore and you can stay at somewhere as close as an hour to as far as 2 1/2 hours. We go to Wildwood Crest. There's lots to do and is great for families. We like to rent a condo so we have a kitchen. I use the website VRBO.com. It stands for vaction rentals by owner, and you can find lots of stuff to rent! Good luck!

How about the Poconos, or the Finger Lakes area - that's a bit of a long drive, but there's lots of places to stop along the way.
