It is very true that it is genetic!! From week #3 of my pregnancy, I lubed up everyday with Palmer's Cocoa Butter, the lotion and the massage cream. I knew that my mother got them, so I wanted to do all I could to prevent it. Now, it also has to do with how big you get. A lot of women don't get them until the last month or two. I have gotten pretty big and the doctor said I have a lot of amniotic fluid, that's why I was actually measuring 4 weeks ahead everytime they measured me at the office. My stomach is getting HUGE. I am now in my 35th week and have stretch marks alll over the lower half of my belly carrying this little boy, who just swims around as he pleases! Theres nothing I can do about it, so I don't sweat it anymore... I just lube up all the time still, it makes the stretching more comfortable. I just keep in mind all that Im gaining and the fact that having too much amniotic fluid is better than having too little. So, even if you do get the stretch marks, just know that they fade to practically nothing and you have a precious baby to show for it!!
Good luck and don't waste your money on the expensive lotions... they're going to happen if they're destined to (as much as they are sooo ugly in the meantime)! I've seen too many girlfriends splurge on the "miracle lotions" and it made no difference unfortunately. Put that money towards your baby and things to pamper yourself!!!

My cousin told me about a miracle oil called Clarens! I used it everyday with both of my children and I do not have any stretch marks. You can buy it at Dillards, and it is the only thing I think really works. Some people say if your Mom had them, you will have them. But, My mom had HORRIBLE strech marks and I have none. I swear it is thanks to Clarens. It is not cheap, but well worth it in my opinion.
Good luck!

Congrats on the pregnancy, it is a wonderful time in your life!
I just had my 4th boy 6 wks ago, and never got tired of pregnancy, especially feeling them move around!
As far I I know and most doctors I have asked say the same thing, that Stretch marks are not really preventable.
It is a gene thing, so if your mom had them really bad then you will get them as well. The cocoa butter does make you smell good and nice and soft though! If you have not had them so far, chances are you may not really get them, especially since this is your first pregnancy, and the skin is nice and tight!
Good luck!

I used it in am and pm as well as after a shower. Though only thing is it can get pretty expensive since it was about $25. I used to be only able to get it at La Ideal Baby Store but now they sell it at Babies R US at least the pembroke pines store does and GOOD LUCK

As most have said they are genetic and related to your skin elasticity. That being said, I did get quite a few and even more with my second pregnancy which was only 9 months later=) However, I have been using Strivectin D which is sold at any Department store,(Dillards, Macys etc) and it is proved to reduce the redness and decrease the appearence of them. You can't use while you are nursing and its intensive, 3x a day for 6 weeks but it really does work. As for the price its $120.00 for the bottle(you only need 1) so its a little pricey but cheaper than laser. I asked for it for a mother's day gift! Good luck. Jen

Stretch marks do not run in my family at all, however, I am covered. My best advice is too avoid eating for two. Don't gain more weight than you are supposed to so that your skin doesn't have to stretch more than it needs to.
I know that if I had stuck with a healthy eating plan in my first pregnancy, I wouldn't have streched as much. I will always regret it! I wasn't nearly as big with my second pregnancy but obviously, it was too late for the stretch marks.

I highly recomend Clarin's Toner Oil. I have used it in my two pregnancies (I'm 39 weeks now on my 2nd) and I get a lot of compliments on what a beautiful belly I have with no strech marks. A friend of mine told me it's one of the best products out there. They sell it at Dillard's and it's $45. Once you apply it after taking a shower, you have to let cool water fall on your belly, thighs and breast or what ever areas you've applied it on. You only need small amounts of it. When you go to the Clarin's counter, tell the sales person it's their famous toner oil for pregnant women and she'll know exactly what it is. I was told by my friend there is also a lotion they carry that's for after the oil application. I could not afford both. But the oil alone worked just fine for me. Good luck.

I went back to it this time because it worked so well the first time and I need the elasticity especially going on 35. I need all the help to snap back. In addition, my sister taught me a trick with the first child. After you have the baby wear a terry cloth rob and tie the belt really tight around your waist not to let any air back up in there. Your stomache will go back to size quickly. Dont get me wrong it will hurt but that is the reason people leave the hospital still looking like the baby is in there. Alas, another lovely trait to blame on the parents. Unfortuantely, stretch marks are genetic. Lucky me my mom got them and it didn't help that my daughter was almost 9 lbs. I have many down the front of the belly, around the belly button, down the front of my thighs and oh joy! on the breasts too since breastfeeding for two years resulted in an EE cup (didn't even know they made them that big before then). Elastic skin was not in my genome. I hope you are more fortunate. You will either get them or not, depending on your family, in the meantime just use any lotion to control belly itch if you have any. Focus on being comforable.
P.S. BTW, I used a lovely lotion, barmon (can get it on barmon.com). It did help reduce the appearance of current stretch marks.

Have gone from 130lbs - 250 lbs and back....I can say I have good genes - no creams no stretch marks on my belly. I do have some on my thighs just from gaining weight. I can suggest Avons cellulite cream ( they do have a stretch mark cream) but this cream firms and tightens skin and I love it. I can also tell you the stretch marks I do have g o almost invisible when I go back to my normal weight. And I do not sell avon or no anyone who does :) I just like that cream.

Sorry to say, but either you get stretch marks or you dont and no lotion makes a stitch of difference.
I used nothing and got absolutely no stretch marks whilst my best friend used everything on the market ( and was smaller then me) and ended up very very scarred. It depended on the elasticity of your skin and because that is genetic- there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it.
You will find about 30 creams and anointments on the market that say they will help and nearly as many people who believe the hype - really - its bulls33T. Dont waste your money.
Just flow with it - there are bigger issues then scars.

Unfortunately, J., there are no creams, lotions, etc... that will "prevent" stretch marks. Stretch marks are the end result of the skin stretching internally. However, the creams and lotions will help to keep you from scratching and making the marks worse. The best thing that you can do is to stay hydrated (drink your water), eat well, rest well, and keep the skin from drying out. Shea butter, cocoa butter, belly cream etc... are good for topical use, but most of what you see in a woman's stretch marks are coming from her genetics. (In my childbirth classes, I always reference the pregnant mother's mother. If grandma went without marks, the pregnant mother is more likely to go the same way. If grandma is covered with body memories of her pregnancies... then the pregnant mother is more inclined to have similar marks.)
other people use cocoa butter i never did and i have two kids one is 13 and the other is 11 hope you find this product it will be any where sincerely C. h

Hi there, I am pregnant with my second child and during a prenatal massage at an institute here in Ft. Lauderdale catered specifically to infants and mommies to be, the therapist recommended some great lotions. She first shared some tips with me; 1. do not use anything that has mineral oil such as Palmers Stretch Mark cream... 2. go to your natural health food stores such as Whole Foods which is an organic based grocer. I bought two products. 1. Mother's Special Blend which is pure oils you can go to mothersspecialblend.com 2. From Reviva Labs 9 Months (I think that's the name) you might be able to check out revivalabs.com... I hope you can find these. I really like them. Keep in mind though that stretch marks are partially genetic i.e. your genetic makeup as far as the elasticity in your skin. None-the-less I would try these and rub away every day... I know your concern all too well. Good Luck! :)

Hi J..
I had heard that it was just an old wives tale---cocoa butter for preventing stretch marks; that it genetic whether or not you develop stretch marks.
So, I decided to do an experiment. With my first child, EVERY DAY I applied pure cocoa butter to my stomach, breasts, thighs, and top of my butt/lower back. The result--not even one stretch mark! With my second child, I just applied regular, vitamin e fortified lotion every now and again. The result--stretchmarks galore. Granted, I have seen a lot worse, but I did get quite a few.
So my recommendation is to find a tub of pure cocoa butter (not the cocoa butter sticks, they are too try), and start right away.
Good luck.

Hello J.!
Congrats on your 1st pregnancy. The half-way point is always exciting...hopefully you're feeling much better than you did during your 1st trimester and almost in the home stretch. I know this is off-topic, but have you been able to or chosen to find out the gender!?
As far as creams or lotions, I used Palmer's cocoa butter during both of my pregnancies...and for the most part, they did the trick. I've heard that a lot of it is in the genetics -- either you'll get stretch marks, or you won't.
Maybe someone else will suggest a newer solution.
Best wishes with your bundle-to-be!

Check with your relatives to see if it runs in your family, I lucked out and my mom doesn't have any stretch marks after 3 kids. I know it has something to do with genetics. hi,
When I was pregnant with my son I used EVERYDAY, MORNINGS & EVENINGS a cream for very dry skin from Jensen... but you can choose what ever brand you like (you don't need to spend a lot of money).
It worked perfectly for me... I have a few mark around my navel and you can barely see them.
If I can give you an advice : Hide you skin form the sun.... if your skin stretches (even with a cream) the marks will fade faster if they are not exposed to the sun (after the delivrey too). I waited a year after the birth of my son to wear a bikini (I wore a tankini before to protect my belly)...
I hope you are enjoying your pregnancy...

Unfortunately, J., stretch marks occur at a tissue level that lotions cannot reach. They are hereditary, your parents either gave you nice elastic skin or not. (So you can blame them if you get a lot of stretch marks!) The best thing to do is to not gain more weight than necessary to have a healthy baby. The way to do this is to eat a very healthy diet with little in the way of empty calories that will end up on your hips.
Lotions are nice to soothe dry, itchy, stretched skin but they really cannot prevent stretch marks no matter what anyone says. If a lotion worked for your friend then it was because she wasn't going to get stretch marks whether she used lotion or not.
In my opinion the best thing to do about stretch marks is to think of them as a badge of motherhood and be proud! They start out looking kind of reddish purple but eventually they get very light and almost silvery and are hard to see.
Good luck with your pregnancy and I wish you a nice, stretch mark free belly!
