Hi moms,
I am struggling with super dry skin for both my almost two year old & myself. I'm hoping someone can recommend some good lotions to use. I have tried most of the "obvious" ones-Aveeno, Cetaphil, Huggies & Johnson brands-most of what you can buy at Target-I do not want to spend a lot-espicially without being able to return it if it does not work. Any advice appreciated!
Thanks so much!!
Kristin

Hi Kristen:
Avon makes a wonderful product called "Skin So Soft". My daughter has terribly dry and itchy skin and this works wonders for her. I haven't yet found an Avon distributor in the area-but if you find one, let me know! Good luck! T.

I'm an Arbonne consultant... and I don't want it to seem like I'm just trying to sell you something... but the bodycare serum and lotion are really great for people with dry skin and eczema. If you decide to buy it and discover that it doesn't work for you, then I'll give you a 100% refund. I really am just telling you because I know it has helped so many other people with the same problem!

My 1 year old also has dry skin with some patches of excema. Our ped. recommended putting a triple anitbiotic cream on the dry patches and then Cetaphil all over. We do this after bath time and without completely drying her off. It took 2 days for the patches to disappear and the Cetaphil has worked for her everywhere else.
Good luck!

I've tried a lot of different lotions too. Any time I decide to try something new I always go back to Curel. Not thin and greasy or thick and heavy, moisturizes really well. Good luck.

Kristin,

I have heard that the baby products from Arbonne work wonders! One of my friends uses it on her daughter's eczema and it is the only thing that helps. They have a line with baby body wash and baby lotion. You might try that. I'm not sure about their return policy but it seems like the lotion is around $12. I use their face products and love them.

Good luck!

Have you tried the Aveeno with natural colloidal oatmeal, its the only one that works for me and my son who has bad eczema. Wal Mart makes the equate version of the Aveeno and it works just as well and is 1/2 the price.

Hands down to Auquaohor! My dauhgter has excema and thats what her doc recommended and it really does work. Its nice b/c its cheap and you can get it at Walgreens and such so you dont have to mess w/ ordering. We have tried alot of stuff and this helped the most. Also if you put Aveno oatmeal packets in your bathwater it seems to help. We also limit the time our daughter can stay in the water too and that has really helped some too....Good Luck!

Have you tried Aquaphor or Eucerin? Both of my sons had eczema and had horrible rough skin. I would lather them with Eucerin everynight and it sure made a difference. In fact, my doctor is the one that recommended both. Another thing that is suppose to help for very dry skin is straight vaseline. I prefer the lotion approach. Aquaphor is clear and more like vaseline and eucerin is a thick, creamy lotion. We have even used Aquaphor for diaper rash....

My mom told me about about a hand and body cream called Pacquin. She is a retired nurse now, but many years ago her hands were so dry, cracked and bleeding from washing them so much. She tried everything and nothing worked. Another nurse told her about medicated Pacquin and she says it healed her hands overnight. It's hard to find, but she found it at Meadows Pharmacy in Lewisville on FM 407. It's $5.59 for 8 ounces. The medicated Pacquin is in a white container, with a purple lid and purple writing. I use it on my hands because I wash them so much. If you have dry skin all over; it might mean you need to drink more water.
I know they also sell dry skin Pacquin Plus with a pink lid, but I have not tried that one.

I have areas on my upper arms that get almost scaley theyre so gross to me (I know, TMI for everyeone else) but what I've found is that taking a hot bath/shower... exfoliating the area with an exfoliating pad - buff puff or with a salt scrub... etc. Then before I get out of the shower sometimes I grab a bottle of lavender scented baby oil and just pour it on my arms/legs/hips/ back and rub it in... this works great. the toher thnig I do is to use Aquaphor -- it's not a lotion more like a treatment ointment...consistenecy of Vaseline but it has more nutrients and healing within it...

good luck! ;)

Try Aquaphor. It's made by Eucerin (sp?) and it a vaseline type consistency. My youngest has eczema and it's the only lotion that keeps it in check. With everything else, he has huge, red splotches all over his skin. However, if I keep Aquaphor on it, his skin is almost normal looking. It works really well on my dry feet/heels too!

I think all of the cold weather combined with our indoor heaters running nearly non-stop is probably a big contributor to the dry skin this season. I feel for you. We use Cetaphyl on our kids and I have a few products I use for myself - however I thought I might suggest a place where you can "try before you buy" so you can find something that is right for you. I know it must be frustrating buying a bottle trying it and then setting it aside. Definitely a waste of money. I have had some luck with Origins products in the past for a variety of things - and I mention them in your case because I'm pretty sure you can go into the store and should be able to try products with the help of a sales associate. Generally speaking I've found sales associates there very friendly and helpful and overall have liked the products I have tried. I think a majority of malls have an Origins store these days - Not sure what side of town you are on but I know there is one in NE Mall, Southlake town square, Hulen Mall, Ridgmar Mall, Parks Mall, etc. Here is a link to their website where you can type in your zip and find a location closest to you: http://www.origins.com/templates/door/finder.tmpl?ngextre...

For me personally - I use a lot of Arbonne products for facial skin care. I like their anti-aging line and there is a night creme that I think would be good for your face from a moisture standpoint. I mention it because it is probably a little too much moisture for me if I used it each night. Might work well for you. For my body I really like using Nivea Q10 body firming lotion - but again also mentioning I do not have extremely dry skin. I use it because it feels light going on but makes my skin feel nice smooth and soft.

I'm not sure where you are experiencing the dry skin - but hopefully a few of these suggestion are helpful. One other thing I might mention is that if you and or your daughter have sensitive skin you might also try a very gentle washing machine detergent such as ALL or DREFT to see if that makes a difference if you are having any type of rashing. Also consider what types of products you are using in your shower and bath tub. Sometimes soap can have a very drying effect.

Hi Kristin,

I use Arbonne's Baby body oil for my children and myself. I also use Arbonne's body serum and lotion for me too. My children and I deal with dry skin, like you I have tried several products that never seemed to take care of the dry skin. I could not say enough good things about their products I have definitely seen a differnce. Their website is www.arbonne.com or you may also check out www.kha.myarbonne.com
The last one is my personal website... I have been so impressed that I now have my own Arbonne business. If you are interested I can send you some free samples, just let me know.

Kristen,
You might try checking out some of the available lotions at places like Whole Foods (Arlington or Dallas) or Healthy Approach in Grapevine. All the petroleum products, like parabens, etc. & other chemicals in all non-natural or organic commercial products can raise sensitivities in some with more delicate skin. The latter has a "Super Tuesday" special the first Tues. of each month, where all supplements & body care items are 20 % off. Jason Inc. makes some really good, thick creams you can try. The staff is very helpful, too. You can return products if not satisfied. THIS TUESDAY is their big sale. Check it out!

hi kristin, i get terribly dry skin on my hands at this time of year, to the point where my skin splits (yuk!). anyway, i recently tried neutrogena hand cream, which can also be used on other affected areas. it's an excellent product and reasonably priced. it's non-greasy, unlike some, and you only need to apply a little at a time for it to work. i'm not sure if they have a kid's range or not, but it may be ok for kids anyway. i hope you manage to find something for yourself and your little one soon.

Kristin,
I just saw your "So What Happened?" post from last year on your son's and your dry skin, and I was wondering if you found a lotion that truly works. If you are still looking, my son (almost 3 now) was diagnosed with eczema at 9 months, and we had tried so many lotions (including the ones our Dr recommended ~ you know, the *expensive* ones!) that did NOT work. We finally found one, and now I shop exclusively with that company for so much of the stuff we use in our home. (And they have a 60-90 day empty bottle guarantee on ALL of their products, too! Although I haven't had to return anything!)

We live in Carrollton, so if you'd like to get together for a "play date" with the kids when the weather warms up a bit, let me know! My son loves playing outside, so we are always on the lookout for new parks to play at.

Hope to hear from you soon!

What I have found that works the best is Gold Bond Ultimate Healing. I work in the medical field and have a 5 month old so I am ALWAYS washing my hands! My hands are very, very dry to the point of cracking open and bleeding in the knuckle area. I have never really liked lotions because of their greasiness. That's why I love the Gold Bond. It absorbs almost immediately and is not greasy at all. It does have the standard "keep out of reach of children" warning on the back but it doesn't say that it can't be used on children. However, I would check with your pediatrician. Another couple of good things to try are these. One is putting vaseline or creamy baby oil on your hands/feet and then putting socks on them. You can do this overnight or for just an hour. Another thing is you can buy a Paraffin wax tub at Walmart or Target. They are WONDERFUL! You can go and have it done and the prices range from 5-25 dollars but I never liked the idea of using the same wax as other people. Hope some of this helps. Good luck!
