Losing a Lot of Weight

I am losing a lot of weight. I mean I am happy but just trying to be a little cautious. All through highschool I was a pant size 9, now I am a 5. I am also losing quite a bit of hair and I am getting really bad migraines at least once a day. I had my second son about 5 months ago, so I thought maybe my hormones were getting back on track, because it was about this time after my first one that my hair started to fall out. But I never lost this much weight after my first son. Does anybody know what I am going through? I want to schedule an appointment but I dont want to find out that it is nothing and look stupid. I have been under a lot of stress with my husband being in Iraq, but can stress do this to you? I have been eating like I always do, so its not that I am starving myself. Please help me to understand what is going on with me.

What can I do next?

Hi C.-It sounds like you might have something wrong with your Thyroid based on your symptoms. It is very common for your thyroid to either be hyperactive or hypoactive after having a child. It sounds like maybe yours is hyperactive. It is usually very controllable with medication depending on what type you have. Your doctor can do some bloodwork to determine what treatment you need. Best of luck. I give you a ton of credit raising 2 young boys on your own, I can't imagine how tough that must be. To me our soldiers are real heroes for what they do and give up so we can have freedom. God Bless you and your family.

C.,

Please go see a doctor as soon as you can. It DOES sound like you have something going on with your thyroid. Although the stress of having taken on all the duties while your husband is gone and the stress of constantly worrying about him is most likely just adding to the whole thing. My husband was called to active duty while I was pregnant in 2004. He made it home on leave for the birth just before Christmas, spent about 4 days with his son, then left to go back to NJ and then on to Kuwait and into Iraq. The entire 15 months he was gone were some of the most stressful times I've ever experienced and I not only lost all of my baby weight, but an additional 30 pounds as well!! Everyone wanted to know how I did it so quickly (it only took a couple months) and that's when I came up with the reply...it's called the Stress Diet!! You sound like a very strong lady and there is no reason to be concerned that you might look silly by going to the doctor. Right now, you are all your kids have (an awesome responsibility!) and you need to make sure you take exceptional care with your health! If you ever want to talk to someone who has been through what you're going through, please email me!! Thanks to you and your husband for sacrificing precious time together to help protect our country and our way of life! Semper Fi!!

Hi C. B,

From one active duty military spouse to another I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. It seems as though you have been through a lot in your young life. But, I can tell you this being married to a military member can sometimes be very stressful. While our husbands are away, we have to step into many shoes. You are going to have to be strong for your military husband, your children and take charge of your health. The very best advice I can give and like all of the responses is to get control of your health and do not diagnose your health yourself.

Make an appointment with your family physician and describe in detail your symptoms. Make sure that the physician you choose is a network provider of Tricare Prime and if he sends you to further testing, make sure that all diagnostic test and other procedures are covered thru Tricare Prime. You don't want to incur unnecessary medical expenses to an out of network provider.

If you need more information or you would just like to email me, I would be more than happy.

To Your Health,
A. P.
Military Spouse

You really should go see your doctor. He or she will not think you are stupid for being concerned about your health. You may just be reacting to stress, but it could be other things also. Just in case you really should be seen. If nothing else they could help ease your mind if they tell you there is nothing majorly medically wrong. I did go throught his also and ended up working with my doctor to set up a diet he thought was right for me. It could be anything from stress to a vitamin deficiancy(like mine) to your thyroid or many other things. So say it is just stress from everything going on....your doctor can also help you with that either by giving you a prescription to help relax you or find a support group for others in your situation. He or she can only help you if you ask their input. Remember...."The only stupid question is the one not asked!"
I hope you start feeling better soon and God Bless your husband and your family!

Hi C., it sounds like you may have a hyperactive thyroid. I went through this after having my daughter. I had energy that I didn't have before, I lost weight and my hair was falling out. I also felt like my body was sensitive-like it was bruised all over. It's a simple blood test for them to find out and if you mention your symptoms to the doctor they will probably do the thyroid test right away. God bless you and your husband, I know that must be difficult for you and what a hero he is. We support our troops! A.

It could be many things like stress or another more serious illness. Your symptoms sound serious enough that you should not feel stupid for having them checked out. Don't be afraid to be a strong advocate for your own health because you're the only one who can be. Be sure you take a list of questions and symptoms with you to the doctor so you don't forget anything. A good doctor is probably more than willing to take time with a thorough exam and answer any questions you have.
