Looking to Donate to Children/baby Charities

Hello mommies,

Does anyone know of a great non-profit organization in SF or Peninsula area that collects gently used baby and children's clothing, gear, etc. and gives to families in need? I normally donate to Salvation Army or Goodwill but I have quite a number of bags and want it to go directly to the babies instead of sitting in a warehouse waiting to be sorted and/or resold. Thanks and Happy New Year!

What can I do next?

I don't know about the SF/Peninsula area but over here in the East Bay, I've donated a lot of our outgrown baby gear/clothes/books at Bananas Inc. on the Oakland/Berkeley border (a nonprofit childcare referral/support/resource agency that serves many low income families) www.bananasinc.org . It's been a few years since I last donated so you might want to give them a call first, but I know they used to keep bins in their lobby where they'd put the donated clothes and books and toys and everything would be taken by the end of the day, I don't recall how they handled the larger things like the cribs and gates - they might've had waiting lists, I'm not sure.
You might also try contacting your local hospital to find out if any social workers are in need of baby gear for their clients - our local parents of twins club occasionally gets requests from social workers in need of baby gear and clothing for their clients.

Dear S.,

A perfect place to donate would be Redwood Family House at 110 Locust St. in Redwood City. You can find out more about it at this link: http://www.shelternetwork.org/redwood.html

It provides transitional housing to homeless families (with children).

Thank you for being thoughtful and generous.

Regards,
L.

The St. Francis Center in Redwood City serves the needy families. They do not sell the items but provide it free to them. Here is a link to their web site, http://www.stfrancisrwc.org/, click under "hours of operation" and you will get some information regarding donation of clothing and such. It is a great organization.

Yes, Shelter Network! Thjis is a great place that gets families back on their feet. They distribute donations to the families often the same day you drop them off. It is a wonderful program.

Here is the website:

There are various drop-off locations. See the Donations section of the website.

Best Regards,
C.

Have you considered your local battered woman's shelter? Most times the women and children leave with just the clothes on their backs. Thankfully I've never had that issue but when I was looking for a place to donate my daughters stuff my coworker told me about her childhood and leaving in the middle of the night. She said it felt like christmas when she could get a few outfits. Since then I've always taken not only my childs cloths there but mine as well. I think what you are doing is a wonderful thing. And your right, its better that someone use them now and not have them sit on a shelf.

San Mateo County has the Children's Fund, it is a not for profit that is run by the Human Services Agency. The fund helps families that are in need. Call ###-###-#### and they can give you info about how to drop items off. They work with families that are in the "system" and need assistance

You could also contact Shelter Networks they have a home in Menlo Park called 1st Step for families. I don't know if they take donations, but they might.

Thanks for giving to others who are less fortunate.
I hope this helps make it easy.
