Looking for Ways to Prevent Bad Coughs with Colds

My daughter gets really bad coughs (mostly at night) when she has a cold. The doctor thinks it's virus induced asthma, though he doesn't hear any wheezing. I am now trying to cut out dairy. Does anyone have any other suggestions to prevent this kind of cough. She is now on flovent and something similar to albuterol as needed. Thank you.

I have recently heard, and have now used with success, vicks vapo-rub on the feet. Put a generous amount of vicks vapo rub on her feet and then put socks on when you put her to bed. I don't know how it works, but it will stop the nighttime coughing!

I would recommend giving her some honey before bedtime. I use it every time I get a sore throat and have had it suggested for my kids when they are coughing.
Hope this helps and I am sending good vibes your way!!

Good for you for trying to cut out dairy! It is not easy and many doctors try to advise against it but it doesn't always work for our bodies. It is one of the top 8 allergens and is a common cause of what you are describing. Be sure to watch out for the other allergenic foods as well. Wheat, soy, nuts, and eggs are common problems. You can search for more info and lists online.

Our family was gluten intolerant and when I took us all off wheat and other gluten grains, we were able to go off all our allergy and asthma meds. It was amazing! I love that my daughters can run now without coughing!

Take care.

Allergies and colds always seem to settle in my son's chest. He will wake up with horrible coughing fits even if he has no symptoms during the day. After trying all the basic remedies (vicks on his feet, chest, and back, a humidifier, decongestant, and Claritin) we finally found success with Zyrtec and Flonase (He does have allergies but who doesn't in the Valley). The Flonase has especially helped with his post nasal drip at night. As for allergens, I also put his mattress in an allergen proof mattress cover and that has helped also. Good luck!

HI L.,
You've already had a ton of advice, but I'll share what I did last night to stop my 2-year old daughter from coughing. She has similar symptoms to your daughter-- a cough with every cold. She's had bronchitis twice that had to be treated with antibiotics.
I took a large tablespoon of raw honey (I love the stuff and buy it at the farmer's market) and "melted" it in a sippy cup of very warm, almost hot water. I gave it to her to hold and drink throughout the night. It really worked.
And, yes, make sure to brush those baby teeth in the morning! Needless to say, this isn't something you want to do every night.
Thanks to the other Moms for the vicks/socks remedy. I'll try that too!

Andrew Weil's books have info on asthma-type coughs. He suggest things like turmeric, which can be taken in capsule form.

Avoiding wheat helps me. If I eat it, I'm suddenly coughing whenever I'm in cold air (asthma thing.)

Hi L.,

I am a wellness consultant. It could be caused by many things. I would start off with her diet and the home environment. They say the air in the home can be 10 times to 100 times worse then outside.

The key is to support and rebuild her immune system now since she is young so she does not grow up with this condition or develop something else.

If you are interested in learning other options email me and I will share with you.

Have a great day.

You have some good suggestions already. I thought I would mention that my daughter has severe reflux until she was about 19 months. Now, when she has a cold, she develops a nighttime cough that is from her esophagus/tummy rather than from her lungs. (And, she has chronic lung disease, BPD). We elevate her head, use a cool mist humidifier, Vicks on the chest/back and also a vapor plug in. With her cough, cold/cough medicine doesn't work since her lungs are clear. You may want to talk with your pediatrician about where the cough is coming from. We know that if our daughter gets a cold, we are not going to get any sleep for about a week until the cough goes away. Good luck.

Ask your pediatrician to look into "reactive airway disease". It's basically illness induced asthma-like symptoms, but is NOT asthma. I have it and have to use Advair after I get a chest cold because the cough simply won't go away on it's own.

Cold air (like at night) and dry air can make mine act up, and are associated with reactive airway.

Good luck!

Put a cool mist humidifier in her room and also elevate her bed with two blocks. This will help her not cough as much and also help with keeping her lungs clear.

i had the same issue with my older girl. chest xrays and everything. eventually, someone sugguested that she had allergies. we tried the 'triminic' pills for children. this was horrible. she had no cough but had a completly violent meltdown at school. we now use claritin. no more cough, no freaking out at school. talk to a nurse or doc and see if this may be doable for you and your little one.

this may sound a little crazy, but it works. put vicks vaporub on the bottom of the cougher's feet then cover with a pair of socks. i warm the socks up if my son also has a chill. this has worked better than any cough medicine ever did !! honey is also a good cough reducer and since your kids are over age 2 it is safe for them to have. my son will sit with a teaspoon of honey and just let it melt in his mouth as he nibbles it a half an hour before bedtime. hope one or both of these work for you!!

There's also a chance that your daughter is having a nighttime allergic reaction to dust/dust mites that could be exacerbating the situation. This is no comment on your housekeeping--I'm sure it's great. Consider having a dust mite allergy test, but also consider reducing potential allergens in her room with the followings strategies:
1) Wash bedding frequently in unscented, nonallergenic detergent
2) Consider purchasing dust mite covers for pillow cases, mattress, and possibly blanket
3) Consider running an air filter in her bedroom
4) Remove carpets and vacuum/dust frequently.

Elevate her mattress, use a humidifier and put baby Vick's on her chest. Also, Johnson & Johnson make a soothing vapor bath that seems to help my son's sinuses to drain a little. Give her water when she starts coughing & you may want to ask Dr. if you can give her a decongestant at bedtime to reduce the amount of gunk that builds up in her throat when she lays down. Childrens Mucinex may help too.

I apologize for not taking the time to read all of the responses below and I apologize if this is redundant.
But I've gone through the same with my 3 year old, and a recently released study instantly came to mind:
Honey is a better and safer treatment for children than over-the-counter cough syrup, a new study finds.

"Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine found that a small dose of buckwheat honey given before bedtime provided better relief of nighttime cough and sleep difficulty in children than no treatment or dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medications.

Honey did a better job reducing the severity, frequency and annoyance of nighttime coughing resulting from upper respiratory infection than DM or no treatment. Honey also helped the coughing child and the child’s parents get more sleep."

As long as she doesn't have an allergy to honey, it seems that this could cause no harm to try, but really maybe helpful to your child. I know the next time my daughters symptoms flare up I'm going to try this before heading the pharmacuetical route!
