Hi, it's -10 and I'm looking for advice on what to do with my 5 month old her in the Anchorage area. I'm starting to get cabin fever. We don't know anyone so i thought here might be a good place to start asking for suggestions on things to do.

What can I do next?

U could look into the story times that the local libraries have for infants/small children.I've never taken my daughter (20 months) myself but they sound fun.

We also just go walk the malls when we start really climbing the walls because even if we don't have the money to shop we're getting outta the house and can do some window shopping.

I've lived here for years and I myself can't think of new things to do during these cold winter days with my daughter.I'm stumped and I don't have many mommy friends who are in the Anchorage area (I grew up in the valley so they're all out there).

There is a store called "Over The Rainbow Toy Store" on Huffman that I bought a book at. It is called, "Anchorage With Kids". It was written by a local mom, and has so many ideas and lists of things to do in Anchorage for moms. You should really get this book. I have found all kinds of classes, and activities in it to keep me busy!
There is a place called "Aurora Kids" (formerly known as the Little Gym) that has mommy & me classes for all ages. I started going to them with my son when he was an infant and we still go once a week.
I also like to go to H2Oasis with him. It is an indoor waterpark. They have specials for mothers & babies/toddlers on certain days of the week.

You could take her swimming at the school pool off jewel lake by burlington coat factory. Go to the 5th avenue mall and go window shopping? It would be good excersise for you

Hi L.! I'm a Phoenix transplant too. I grew up in Mesa and have been in Anchorage for almost 4 years. There is a playgroup at Providence Hospital I took my daughter when she was younger. Cuddlers is for infants and Cruisers is for the crawlers. I think Cuddlers is 12-1pm on Mondays and Thursdays. Loussac Library has a lap sit for infants. Their website is http://lexicon.ci.anchorage.ak.us/. When your baby gets older, Arctic Gym on Arctic between 36th and Northern Lights has open gym for toddlers from 9-11am Monday-Friday. There is also a toddler time at H2Oasis, Mon, Wed and Fri between 11am-1pm.

Also, after this cold snap, bundle your baby up (you can get used warm clothes at Once Upon a Child or new, discounted cold weather gear at the Army/Navy surplus downtown), put on a front carrier and go for a walk on one of the trails. Try the coastal trail downtown.

I hope you find a way to get out!

I have 3 kids and can empathize with you about nothing to do when it's cold, so group of Moms get together for play group every Wednesday, all ages, welcome. If you're interested let me know and I can get you the information.

Also, H2Oasis has toddler time wednesday and fridays, it's only 5 dollars from 11-2. Check out their website for more information.

My husband and I have a 22 month old, and we were in the same boat, because we were so hesitant to take him out in the cold. We have found Imaginarium to be a neat place for him. It's a science center that has hands on things to do, which is probably more than a 5 month old would want, but it's something. We moved up from Ohio in November and have been struggling, too. We wanted to enjoy winter activities, but it has been difficult the past couple weeks with the bitter cold. When it warms up a bit, there is a group that does hikes at different parks in the area on Monday and Thursday evenings. The Monday ones are "family friendly," so if you have a Baby Bjorn or something similar, that might help. Our biggest savior has been a "baby backpack" for our little guy. I don't have the link but if I can get it from a friend, I'll post it. In the mean time, Parks & Rec have a good web site http://www.muni.org/parks/. They have Toddle Time on Thursdays, which is for 0-3 years and may be something to look into. At 5 months, it's a bit early, but I'm not sure what all they have. I hope this helps a little. Will post more if I think of anything!
