Does anyone know of any swim lessons for kids under three that are not parent participating classes? My son is 2 1/2 and after having been in our own neighborhood pool all last summer, he's more than comfortable in the water. He dunks his head, blows bubbles, kicks his feet, and all those very beginner skills... all I've found available through the Y or rec centers are mommy and me classes for this age, with songs and games and getting them used to the water. I feel my son needs a little instruction now, someone who can start teaching him some basics of actually floating and swimming. Does anyone know of any good private lessons or lessons I'm overlooking at the public pools? Also, I know private lessons will cost more, but I'm hoping now outrageously so!!
We are in the O'Fallon, MO area.

You can sign up for so called private lessons at the Y. I believe it is 2:1 ratio. for group classes, i believe the instructors can pass child up to next class level if advanced for his current age group. just ask them about it.
The Renauld Spirit Center does both group and private lessons. Here is their web site:

The St. Peters RecPlex (where my children have done private lessons) also does both group and private lessons. Here is their web site: http://www.stpetersmo.net/default.asp?SectionID=24
Does your neighborhood pool have swim lessons available to members? I used to supervise pools and know that my lifeguards would teach all levels. I coach high school swimming as well and would recommend one of the local hs swimmers. It's usually easier just to do the lessons through an individual person than a program, if you have the pool available. I taught private lessons for years and loved it. If you're interested, drop me an email and I can see about a former lifeguard or hs swimmer in the area that would be interested. :)
H.,
I own Little Fishes Swim School, and we typically do not take students under three into our parent-less classes, because most toddlers, may be physically capable, but unwilling to separate from their parent. But we do allow kids under three into our next level if they have been with us in the Parent/Toddler class, because they are familiar with our facility, staff and routine. You can bring him in for an evaluation, and if he gets in the pool without you, then he could start early.
If not, our Parent/Child classes DO teach floating, proper body position, kicking and arm movements and show you how to work with your child in the bathtub and other pools.
I know, it seems far (we are in Brentwood, MO), but we do have families that drive over 30 minutes to come each week.
