I am relatively new to the Oak Park area and am looking for a OB GYN preferably female. Any suggestions? Also any recommendations on where to deliver (besides Women's Hospital downtown)?

Thanks

I like Dr. Lisa Chorzempa. Her office is in Forest Park, but she delivers at West Sub (and other hospitals, too, I think). I've also seen Gayle Reidman, the midwive, and she's great.

I also wanted to voice my recommendation for the West Suburban Midwives. I go there for my gyno needs, and they also delivered my baby at West suburban hospital in the Alternative Birthing room. It was an awesome experience. The midwives are so attentive and sensitve. Go with them!

If you have a low risk pregnancy, then the midwives and west sub would be fine. Personally, I would never think of delivering at West Sub as their quality of care is not all that great and they don't have any of the resources that you might need if things do go badly. So I would choose the midwives associated with U of I or a obstetrician attached to Rush. Howard Strassner is at Rush and he is a former President of the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. I think he is great.

Hi T.,

The best OB GYN ever is Dr. Patricia Boatwright at RUSH.

She is the BEST!!!

Dear T.:

Welcome to Oak Park! I looked for practitioners who could support a natural birthing experience. For an OB GYN, I'd like to suggest Dr. Bertha Lopez, at Resurrection/West Suburban Hospital. For a place to deliver, I'd like to recommend Hinsdale Hospital. When my huspand and I prepared for the birth of our son, we wanted to do everything in Oak Park. We did look at West Suburban and thought it was very good. But we had a higher comfort level with Hinsdale's stats (e.g. nurse/patient ratio, separate L&D ER, level 3 NICU). Unfortunately, Dr. Lopez was not part of that system. Fortunately, I found excellent midwives at West Suburban Women's Health (no association to West Suburban Hospital) in Willowbrook. Good luck to you and yours!

To echo what others have said...West Suburban Midwives is a great practice.

I used them for both my kids. They are backed by OBs and are fantastic, highly recommended. Lots of personal attention and the same tests, etc. you'd get at an OB. They deliver out of West Suburban hospital. Although small, it is one of the best hospitals to have a non-c-section birth at statewide. They have birthing tubs and very nice accommodations for natural birthing (called the ABC rooms - alternative birthing center - funny that natural birth is 'alternative').

West Suburban Midwives Associates (Gayle Reidmann and Julie Marks) are FABULOUS. They attend births at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park.

I used West Suburban Midwives (you don't have to be pregnant to use midwives, they are specialized RNs - similar to NPs - whom you can see for all your regular ob/gyn stuff). I delivered a year ago at West Suburban Hospital. At first I was nervous because it looked like a little rinky-dink hospital, but they were fantastic. They have the lowest c-section rate in the chicago-land area and the nursing staff very much follows your instructions and wishes. After delivery they pretty much leave you alone - they only took the baby out of my room twice, both for about 10 minutes, just to weigh her and do her hearing check. Not the case at most hospitals.

I know you asked for a woman, but if you consider a man, Dr. Tong with PCC affiliated with West Suburban Hospital is fanstastic. I absolutely loved him and would love to use him again but I moved and need to be at a hospital closer to home. His office is in the Professional Office Building at West Suburban. I believe it's on the 6th floor. He is really great and an easy going guy. He'll address all of your issues but does it in a calm and sometimes humorous way. He knew at my 17 week appt. (my first with him) that I would be 1-2 weeks early and what do you know, I was 10 days early. He predicted on a Tuesday that I would be back on Sunday to deliver and again, he was right. He is a very talented physician that has been doing this for many years and I just felt very comfortable and confidant that he was always doing what was in my baby's and my best interests. When I was asking for recommendations, everyone told me that he was the best and I really feel that he is.

If you want something in or close to Oak Park then I highly suggest West Suburban Midwives Associates. THe midwives are great (to echo a previous comment, you can see a midwife for gyn care). In Chicago, I would go to Swedish Covenant Hospital (Midwives), kind of far but very low rates of interventions at birth. I do not recommend UIC Hospital nor U of C for L&D!!
