Hi I'm trying to decide if a regular or co-op preschool is better for my 3 yr old son. I have visited the Clements preschool and really liked what i saw. Also considering the Almaden Parent Co-op. I'm so confussed at which is better for him. We are new to the area and have no friends with children to ask. Any suggestions? Thank you so much for any information.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to Thank all the Moms that helped us with all their great advice on preschools. I really wanted to do the co-op but all of the wonderful ones that were recommended either had long waiting list or were just much further then we wanted to travel. Also with having a 17 mth old as well and noone to help watch her we finally made the decision to send him to Clements Preschool. We toured it several times and really liked what we saw. He also enjoyed the time he spent there. But I definitly will strongly reconsider the co-ops when my daughters ready for preschool & i have alot more time to participate. Thank all of you again for the wonderful advice!

My kids have gone to Discovery Parent-Child Preschool for 4 yrs now and we love it. If you are looking for a place to meet people, a co-op preschool is the way to go. You can't beat knowing the kids in their class and the parents. You build a whole community of support and meet life-long friends because they have children the same age as you. Discovery has classes for 2yrs old up to pre-kinder. My kids love it. Here's the website if you want to check it out (or you can email me if you have any questions).

It's located off Leigh & Camden (Cambrian area). The playground is awesome, and the teachers are wonderful and warm.

Hi A.,
I have been going to a wonderful co-op school for my son for two years. It is called Westside co-op preschool in San Jose. I think it maybe too far for you, but I wanted to tell you about it just in case.
It has been a wonderful place to make new friends, work as a team with the other parents/teachers and the teachers are so talented, loving and awesome. My son started the two year old program and I loved being there to watch him and see how he interacted with the other students, parents and teachers. He is an active guy and I felt so frustrated when he wouldn't sit for circle time. The teachers assured me that this is normal and the freedom to be near circle time in another room, or even going outside to play was okay. He learned how to sit for some of the circle time in the three year old class. Now he doesn't have a hard time sitting for most of the circle time. I love hoe they didn't force him to do anything. Also, I love watching him play, while I would have some job to do at the school. I love interacting with the parents and other children and watching them grow up as well. We also have parent education classes which has helped me to learn and grow as a parent. I would encourage anyone to check out parent co-op's for preschool, the benefits are wonderful. I love the play oriented approach and am amazed at how much the children learn in a non stressed atmosphere. He also went through the three year old program too and there is a Pre-K class.
I hope this helps you and good luck in finding the right place. We would love to have you at Westside co-op Preschool, ###-###-####, located near Winchester and Payne in San Jose. If you have any questions please email me.
Take care, K.

I suggest A.T.L.C. (A Tyson Loving Care Preschool). I had 2 kids go through their program and LOVED it. They provide the basic attention to preschoolers as well as music, spanish, french and sign language. Their music program is not just listening to tapes. The owner of the preschool actually comes into the classroom and plays songs on the piano for the kids to sing and do some hand motions to. The 3 year olds learn French, while the 4 year olds learn Spanish and sign language. They even offer a junior "k" program for those kids that meet the border age requirement. Kids must be potty trained. They offer M-F, MWF and TTH classes -all full or 1/2 days available. It is located on Union and Cambriana. Most of the teachers there are moms and therefor provide that extra touch of TLC! Good Luck!

Is your son fully potty trained? If not, that will make many/most preschools not an option.

If you have the time to dedicate, parent co-ops are great. They enable you to get to know the other parents and kids. It's a great way to meet new friends for you and your child. And much easier to arrange play dates. You just do not get that same familiarity at drop-off preschools, so it feels weird when your child gets asked to have play date at a virtual stranger's house.

However, co-ops usually require quite a bit of a parent's time, both in the classroom, attending meetings, as well as other volunteer events (grounds maintenance or yard sale or the like.) Make sure you understand the commitment required at those you are considering.

We love 3D Preschool. It is on Snell between Branham and Blossom Hill. Our oldest son went there and was so well prepared for kindergarden. Our 2nd son is currently there and our daughter is already lined up to go when she gets old enough. The boys have made wonderful friends from 3D Preschool and so have my husband and I. I know they are having an open house on August 8th. Here are the details . . .

I went to Action Day primary plus when I was a child and when I had my daughter there was no questin where I would take her. The have numerous locations from Birth to 8th grade (West Valley Middle School). If your child is not potty trained they help with that, which was absolutely fabulous. They have a great dance program for both girls/boys as well as other sports/outside activities. Right now they have summer programs where there is a different theme for the week and everyday there is a different activity or special snack. You can have your child bring their own lunch or they have a hot lunch program. My daughter absolutely loves it and has developed so much socially and educationally. Their website is www.actiondayprimaryplus.com. If you have anymore questions or are interested please let me know because they have a special if I refer you (up until the end of aug you get 10% off for 10months)

Hi A.,

I am a mother and child care provider for over 23-years. It sounds like you are really involved with your children. A Co-op would give you the opportunity to stay involved and allows you to watch how your child interacts with other children. A co-op will also allow you to meet other parents. A regular center will not generally allow you to participate. Whatever you decide you need to call Community Care Licensing Division @ ###-###-#### and check for complaints. All complaints must be disclosed. This should help you decide. Take care, J.
