Looking for Natural/organic Baby Products

Hi,
My 1 yr old is extrememly sensitive to all baby washes and lotions. The only one that I have tried that doesn't break her out in little bumps is Earth's Best organic lotion and wash. I love the results and I know it is great for her, but it is terribly expensive, around $9 for a 7 oz bottle. So, I am wondering if anyone knows of any other natural or organic products that may be a bit more affordable? Thanks! R.

What can I do next?

Both of my children have eczema and we have been through many many products to get to where we are. My son now takes a bath with just water (no soap unless he needs it after a day at the park and then it is unscented dove)and we use a paul mitchtell baby shampoo (dermatologist recomended it)cause the shampoo will dry out the skin as well when it is rinsed out of the childs hair. For treatment we use what is called desonide (prescription).

Try only bathing twice a week. Babies and toddlers do not need to be bathed frequently. There faces, hands and butts are always being cleaned anyway. My kids have great skin and I only use lotion after twice a week bathing, which also saves on money. Also use as little soap or bath product as you can or even just a good soak and scrub with a cloth.

Have you tried Dr. Bronner's soap? They make several varieties, including one for babies. I find it at the Vitamin Shoppe, but they also have a website: www.drbronners.com

Good luck!

We use cloth diapers, so we use an all natural soap so we don't have buildup on them. We use Charlies Soap, www.charliesoap.com its made from washing soda and coconut oil, washes clean iwth no fragrance or residue. My oldest has wicked eczema and thsi wash is very gentle on his skin.

We use Berts Bees soap, and Equate Dry Skin Cream lotion on his skin every night.

Hi
I use meleleuca products. They are cheaper and are all natural.Plus they are very condensed and a bottle of shampoo for my son lasts about 3 months at least. Try the website, if you cant order it, let me know and I can get you connected w/ a rep (my friend Fred) and he will take care of you.

Hi R.. Our family does our best to use all organic products and eat all organic. It is really expensive which makes it tough. We use mostly Burts Bees which is Paraben, Phthalate, sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate free. The less chemicals the better. And maybe you want to check this out...I met her at an evnet at Kelly Farm in Elk River, Amber Kaiser, she makes her products using only 100% high quality pure, natural, and organic ingredients and they are resonable. The name is Jozlyn's Remedies, the website is www.JREMEDIES.com or email ____@____.com and the ####-###-####
Best of luck. I have done a lot of research and spent a lot of $, so if you have ?'s I would love to help and maybe save you some money and leg work.....J., ____@____.com

HI R.!
I know you're in St. Paul but have you checked out Trader Joes? There is one in St. Louis Park & Maple Grove. They might have something. If you're not familiar with them they have a huge selection of organic and natural foods, as well as some health & beauty products. Also, Fresh & Natural foods. There is one in Shoreview, Bloomington, Hudson, and somewhere else. Best of luck to you! That's a tough one.

Hi R., I have awful skin and so does my 4 yr. old daughter. We use Vanicream bar soap and Vanicream lotion. It is a very good product and works for both of us. Have you ever tried Burt's Bees?

We have always had good luck with the Burts Bees line of products. It used to be hard to find (only boutique type stores around here) but I was in our corner pharmcy last week and saw they had some products there. We love their mosquito repelent...works very well without the deet. Only problem with it is it smells like lemon pledge :)

You may want to consider bathing her with just water for a while. That worked well for my kids - my pediatrician said they don't really need the soap.

I've had good luck with Earth Friendly Baby diaper cream - sometimes it's the only cream my kids' sore bottoms can tolerate. I believe they make a wash too.

You may also want to check into your laundry detergent and discontinue use of any fabric softeners, if you're using them. My girlfriend has a child who is sensitive to soap, and the fabric softener was a big part of his sensitivity.

I have a son who has extremly sensitive skin. We use tide free laundry detergent. His ped actually recommended we try dove body wash. He gets a bath every other day instead of every day and we have had no problems with dove. He also uses prescription steroid ointment for his excema. It's much cheaper than the organic and may be worth a try. Good luck with your last 4 weeks of law school! How exciting!

My baby has eczema and I just took her to the doctor for it. This is what the pediatrician said: Use Cetaphil (non-soap) cleaner for bath, Eucerin or Aveeno lotion for skin (Aquaphor if it is really dry), and Hydrocortisone 1% to spot treat any dry patches. I know some of these products are not all natural, but it works for my baby and I thought this would help.

My son is extremely sensitive and has been so all of his life (almost 4). We have always used California Baby products, which are only slightly less pricey than what you're using, but we cut them with water and they go a bit farther (available at drugstore.com and local coops). They don't suds much when cut, but he gets clean anyway - including sandbox sand and river mud. They also have a nice bubble bath. They have some scented and unscented products and are the only one in which the scented products don't make him break out. For all our laundry, including cloth diapers when he wore them, we used Biokleen, which is available at drugstore.com (you can search for the brand) and at some of the coops. Now when he breaks out, we know he's used something else at preschool or at a neighbor's.

We love these products too and just grin and bear the price. I can't seem to find any other wash without that nasty sodium laurel/laureth sulfate which is a really harsh cleanser. We also like the Burt's Bees Baby lotion (no drying alcohol :)) and wash, however their products are equally expensive.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help accept to agree with you-- expensive?--yes, but worth every penny!

My little one has really sensitive skin as well. Have you heard of Arbonne International (www.wellbeauty.myarbonne.com)? They have a baby care line and this was the only product we tried that didn't cause her to break out in red bumps everywhere. Good Luck.

Hi R.,
Daisy Blue Naturals has a great line of baby care products. They are 100% natural and work wonderfully. Here is the site of the person I order from: www.4028.daisybluenaturals.com. Her name is Jill and I think they are having a sale on all lotions this month.

My son has eczema and our daily bath routine includes the following;
Johnson's Head to Toe Baby Wash
(his medicated cream for his "rough" spots)
then either Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion or
Mustela Hydra-Bebe Lotion

I don't know if these would work for you, you could check them out though. The Mustela stuff is a little pricey so we mostly go with the Aveeno lotion. We haven't had any huge problems using the Johnson's Wash...we also use the Johnson's Shampoo for him. I feel the pain in your wallet though because if our son has a bad flair up we have to get the more expensive stuff and it really adds up. It seems like the less chemicals they put in the stuff the more expensive it is (seems backwards to me).

I think the vanicream bars as well as lotions work very well. Snyder's sells them and I am sure other places do as well.

Have you tried washing her with a fragrance-free bar soap like Cetaphil or Basis? My pediatrician recommended that because the bars have fewer allergy-producing ingredients than liquids. You can use the bar soaps on her hair too (unless she has a whole lot of it, I suppose). I used Aquaphor for lotion for my son. Its also fragrance-free and a really thick, good moisturizer. You can get it at Target and a big tub is about $15 - the tub lasts for months, though, so it doesn't work out to be too expensive.

Congrats on finishing law school! I'm a lawyer myself and can't imagine how challenging it would be to have one child, another on the way and be trying to finish your third year. Enjoy the break before the bar.
