I need to find out what to put my 3 1/2 year old son in for music lessons. He loves drums the best along with all other instruments. I don't know if I should do group lessons or private, piano or drums or general?? I want to keep it fun at this age.

What can I do next?

I recommend Kids Musik of Charlotte with Sandi Barber. She used to be with Kindermusik and started her own music company. She is wonderful and is a genius with music. We have been with her for years with all 3 kids. At your son's age it needs to be more fun then focused on private lessons. I think that would come later. As they get older (around age 5) she has a 2 year class that is an introduction to learning notes and various instruments, etc. My kids lover her and the classes and are learning so much that they will take with them to private lessons. Her number is ###-###-####. Address is 10110 Johnston Road, 28210 in the shopping center with Food Lion right past where Park Road turn off to the right. She also has a class at Providence Baptist Church.

Hi J.,
Welcome to Charlotte. My children have really enjoyed their music classes through Community School of the Arts (www.csarts.org). They have group classes for the age of your son that are really fun, learning some notes and rhythms and experimenting with different instruments. They also offer several different types of private lessons and group lessons, or can put you in touch with people who teach. My oldest daughter (she's 5) seems to be musically inclined (not an inherited trait!) and has been asking to play the flute since she was two. She was bored with kindermusic, even at age 2. CSA also has great summer camps.

At that age, I would look at kindermusilk -- see what they offer.

Try the public library first. There are a few music play groups around town. My kids grew up in the childrens chior at church and played instruments and sang. It was a lot of fun for them. I use to be a stay at home mom when they were small and would take them to the library for story time and music time. My mother started teaching my girls piano at age 5. She and I felt they needed to be able to read music and understand it first. My oldest daughter is 15 now and plays piano, guitar, clarinet and piddles with the drums.
Pick up the Charlotte Parent magazine that is often in doctors offices and see what they have in there about music classes.

Good luck with your little ones.
