Looking for "Low-sugar" Breakfast Ideas for Kids

I'm looking for "low-sugar" breakfast ideas for my kids....something quick before we run out the door for school. They usually eat cereal or a cereal bar. They don't want a hot breakfast (they're just not hungry enough), so no oatmeal, or eggs, or pancakes. I usually keep on hand, eggo waffles that they can have, or some toast, but they always go for the cereal. My plan is to drastically cut back on the sugared cereals, so any ideas what else they can eat quickly, besides maybe a banana?

My kids eat the hotpocket brand breakfast lean pockets. They come in bacon egg and cheese and sausage egg and cheese. They are about half the size of the regular hot pockets and so it shouldn't be overfilling. They have 4 grams of fat vs 8 grams in the regular hotpockets. Just a suggestion...C.

Have you tried Fruity Cheerios? They're a low-sugar kid cereal. I'm looking for more nutrious breakfasts also. Flavored oatmeal is more nutrious than a lot of things. It gets real hot in the microwave, but I put an ice cube in it to cool it quickly. He likes to watch it "disappear" :) or gets dressed while it cools. My son has never liked eggs, but I'm going to try them again with ketchup...think it will work now, because he loves ketchup! :) sigh. Getting protein in him in the a.m. is a challenge!

A friend of mine buys waffle cones and layers the inside with yogourt, berries, granola, nuts, etc. then wraps them in foil and freezes them. Her kids love their "breakfast ice cream" and she loves the nutrition they start the day with!

I am the 'bad' mom i guess. We eat breakfast in the car every morning. I have 3 girls and myself to get to the going spots. On the weekends the girls like to bag up the tiny baby carrots. They are great for breakfast b/c they are sweet. I get the ones that are the super mini. They love them. We also make our own trail mix with raisins, dry cereals, pretzels etc... I keep string cheese and squeeze yogart on hand. My 2 yr. Has to have cheese every morning. That is her thing. I buy the packs of smaller portion crackers that are pre-packed. Baked chips, like sun chips, are good too without beign so sweet. Sometimes they fill an icecream cone full of trail mix, grapes, cheese cubes or dried fruit. It is super handy for the car, they can eat the bowl. Breakfast on the go is so hard. But we just cannot get up any earlier, so i will go on being the 'bad' mom who lets her kids eat in the car. Good luck!

Peanut butter is a great easy protein to get in the kids at breakfast, I toast waffles, spread them with PB, sprinkle some dried cranberries on top and fold them in half for a little "sandwich" If you use a Kashi or other whole grain/flax seed/proteiny kind of waffle it's an easy breakfast that is absolutely packed with nutrition.

Look in the health food aisle, there are a number of cereals there that are lower in sugar and higher in protein and fiber. My son loves Clifford Crunch. Maybe something like that would work?

We have the whole grain waffles with low sugar syrup. When they want cereal I give them corn flakes and split a small package of Splenda between them two.

My kids love fruit, yogart and dry apple cinnamon cheerios. They also just eat toast and low calorie jelly, with quick sausage sticks.

Cream cheese and sugarless jam/preserves with wheat bread made into a little sandwich.
Sliced apples and cheese
Toast and peanut butter
These have the energy mix of protein and carbs, but not a lot of sugar.

How about making up a big batch of healthy muffins and freezing them then just heat them up in the oven that morning or set them out the night before. I have several delicious recipes made with honey and whole grains that are great and I would love to share the recipes with you if you want to email me at ____@____.com!

Hi C.,

I'm T. and I cannot have sugar at all. I am conscious as you are about that with my child. I mix up some lemon juice in water in a container with a lid and slice apples and put them in the refrigerator the night before. Apples have less sugar than bananas and have great fiber, too. They are very filling. Or, you can, if time permits, make a fruit salad for the kids.

Peanut butter sandwich is another choice that my child likes. I use the no sugar added jelly/jam/preserves. It provides quick nutrition with loads of protein.

Hope this helps!

My DS, 3 yrs, loves yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, or a flour tortilla and spread cream cheese and low sugar strawberry jelly. Just this weekend I found in the frozen food section bagels with plain and flavored cream cheese. It's about the size of a twinkie and my son and husband like those. I also buy the low sugar jelly by Smuckers in grape and strawberry. For yogurt I buy the Diego (yoplait) yogurt which has 25% less sugar than regular yogurt. Also you can buy a bag of frozen biscuits and heat them up while you're getting ready in the morning and place a slice of cheese in and grab some apple slices or grapes.

My son is not a big breakfast eater he is usually not very hungry (he is 9) so he drinks an ensure plus with a nutrigrain breakfast bar. It has all the nutrients and protein of a full breakfast and they taste good..... The generic version equate does not taste the same at all so I dont recommend generic for this product. In the winter I buy the carnation breakfast with protein and heat it up.

What I LOVE and never grew out of was wheat toast with peanut butter and a glass of milk! Obviously the yogurts. Sometimes when in a hurry I like to spread some refried beans and cheese on a tortilla, heat it up, and go. (I prefer "real" breakfast like pancakes and stuff for dinner, NOT breakfast, I don't know why). Another thing my mom did with us, and I now do with my family: whatever fruit is in season, we make a special meal with. We get healthier cereals (that are honestly too bland normally) and top them with fresh sliced nectarines, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries we pick ourselves, etc. The FRESH fruits have a kick that can not be beat, and you have the healthy high-fiber cereal so it's guilt-free. On a weekend if you take the kids to the strawberry farm or to a field to do some blackberry picking, it is the COOLEST thing to eat what you got yourself.

I agree with the mom below. My kids love those hot pockets. I also get them whole grain waffles, sugar free syrup, chiquita fruit (they have grapes and apples) already bagged etc.

When my daughter was younger, I use to make her granola. I made about a gallon and kept it in a airtight container. They say it lasts for a couple of weeks, but it was gone long before then. She would grab a yogurt and a Ziploc of granola and eat in the car on the way to school. I kept a trash bag in the car for her. Also, cut up apples, oranges, etc. and put in ziplocs ready for her to grab on the way out or if on the weekends she wanted to watch cartoon or play outside with friends.

Hi C.. My kids are all grown and out of the house, but I well remember the breakfast battles. Mine did't like to eat hot breakfasts either, and to this day, my 18 year old won't eat anything hot before noon! What worked for me was cold cereals, but there you go with the sugar thing. I would suggest maybe some yogurt if they like that, and mix dried fruits and nuts or granola cereal in it. They'd still be getting their dairy and some grains/nuts and fruits. I make up my own granola and put blueberries, dried cranberries, dried cherries, oats, all kinds of honey roasted nuts and seeds in it, along with honey, brown sugar (which is much better for them than refined white sugar) or molasses. Not only is this very nutritious, but my g'kids love it. Whether they eat it with a juice drink as a snack on the way to school, or in yogurt as 'breakfast', it's an alternative. There are wonderful recipes on the internet for making your own granola. Hope this helps.

If the kids like milk, have you tried Carnation Instant Breakfast? It is just a mix (or you can buy it canned) that you mix into about 8 ounces of milk and then drink. There is vanilla, chocolate, and I think there is strawberry. My girls love this. It is very quick, it's good and it is also filling. I will sometimes grab it myself on the way out the door.

Try having dinner rolls on hand and filling with a piece of cheese and some grilled chicken cut into strips. Also having cold boiled eggs on had is good. Maybe apple wedges with the above. I'm a Grandmother now but I know what you mean about the sweet cereals...that's what they really want! Just try things that are not necesarily traditional breakfast foods. Hope this helps. Good luck! I don't know if this will work for you or not but my son hates to eat breakfast and it has always been a battle with us. My friends mom gave him the Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage on a stick one morning and he scarfed it down. I don't know if your kids will eat it because it is hot but it works great for us because I can give it to him in the car on the way to school which for us it is great because when he first wakes up in the morning it take about an hour before he will eat anything. Just a thought.
