We are attempting to teach our 2 1/2 yr old son to ride a bike with training wheels. When we push the bike, the pedals do not move. He has to push on them to make the pedals move. We cannot get him to do this. Any suggestions?

I actually would stand behind my son when he had just turned 2, and physically move his feet properly then ask him to do it. The I would start one and he would push the other.. he got it pretty quickly .. of course its hard on your back!!!! You will be amazed once he starts going!!
Of course my other son doesn't even like to sit on the bike yet and he is now 3 1/2!! So if you have any ideas on that one let me know!!

What we did was have our son put his feet on the pedals and push his feet to show him how it works and he caught right on it took all of 5 minutes. Hope that will help you. Good luck

Hi, well, at this age.. it might take a little time.. to just "get it"~once you see he CAN peddle..a big wheel, or something of the sort.. he understands...
then, on the grass.. it seems hard... but you can push them and say goooo and then they wont be as afraid to fall, or for you to watch!
or on the street, by the curb.. they can help themselves push off with there foot off the curb! Good luck, have fun and take out the video camera.. soo fun!!:)
take care

My husband and I had the same problem with our daughter at that age. She is now 4. It seems like even if they learn to move the pedals, it is much harder than it should be. We actually had to get on our hands and knees while she was on the bike and hold her feet and pedal the pedals so she would get used to it, even after that it was hard for her, but we helped her practice doing air bicycle pedaling when she was sitting down. We found that we were trying to push her too hard and eventually she got on and started doing it little by little on her own, she didn't truly get the whole picture and apply it until she was 3. We thought letting her use a big wheel type bike would help, but it didn't. Hope this helps.

Try a tricycle. On the one we have for our son (who is also 2 1/2)when you push, the pedals go around. We encourage him to put his feet on the pedals so eventually he will be able to do it all by himself. Besides, riding a bike and pushing the pedals is a skill that is not expected til at least 3.
