*Looking for Homeschool Resources*

I am going to homeschool my 15 yr old son who is in the 10th grade due to his recent troubles with rebellion. We are convinced this is the way to go to allow him to grow into a respectable and respectful young man without outside influences. My mother is going to actually be teaching him. She homeschooled my younger brother and sister with great success. I am now on the hunt for curriculum I can afford to allow for a good education. I am hoping that some of you wonderful mommies out there can help guide me in the direction to start looking. I know there are places and groups that do trading but I have nothing to offer at this point. Keep him in your prayers as he struggles through these teen years. In fact you could always throw up a prayer for his momma's sanity! Thanks ladies.

Hugs,
Becki~

I think the homeschool bookfair is May 9-10th this year at the Arlington Convention center. Maybe you could google it for the details. There will be tons of information there.

Hi Becki,

I am a homeschooling Mom. I have 4 children from 8 to 17 (almost 18). I have used the Sonlight Curriculum with my children and have been very happy! It is literature rich, has a teachers daily lesson plan, and many other perks! My 15 year old son (formerly public schooled) wasn't a great reader, but Sonlight has turned that around for him! For the last 4 years, Sonlight has been rated the #1 curriculum by homeschoolers worldwide. You can check out their website at www.sonlight.com. I would be happy to chat more with you about the whole process if you need some support. Please privately contact me with your information and I will give you mine. There is also a great book called, "So you're thinking about homeschooling", by Lisa Welchel, that has about 6 different families and their homeschooling experience. There are many ways to approach it. I would recommend you pray about what would best suit your son. Remember, there are many people out there, many support groups in your area, many who have walked the same road you are about to walk, YOU CAN DO IT!!

Blessings on your journey!
A.

Try the Abeka progam. It is a great Christian program that originated in Pensacola Florida. My daughter did Pre-K through 2nd grade in this program, she is now in 5th grade and has made straight A's. The program is easy to understand.

You will want to find out your son's learning style - for instance, some learn best using workbooks, while others are bored to tears with that style. I homeschool, and for my son, the curriculum we are using works well. It is called Tapestry of Grace, and you may want to look at it to see if it is something that would work well for your family. Here is the web address that you can copy and paste:

Click on "Tapestry of Grace Curriculum" at the top of the page, and see what you think. If you have any questions for me, feel free to e-mail me at ____@____.com.

Blessings,

Becki-
There are TONS of home-schoolers in your area. A great place to start (where you can buy new or used curriculum) is the HER Store (Home Educators Resource) in Lewisville, TX. It's on Main St at Old Orchard in the middle corner space - across the street from Big Lots. Another suggestion would be to try Mardel - they have a home-schooling section - but the HER store carries used things too, so you might get a better buy there. Also, I would strongly suggest a support group for home-schoolers - not sure what part of FW you live, but several churches have groups and there is a regional group based out of Bedford - www.heartoftex.org is that website - maybe they could connect you to someone near you. I lead a group like that in Carrollton, but seems a long way from you.
Blessings, S.

I am looking at the Abeka program. They have a traditional home school option as well as a DVD option. Try www.abeka.com and search home school. My daughter needs home school to finish up 2nd grade out of state and does the abeka curriculum at her private school here in TX, which we love.

Make a point to go to the homeschooling book fair in Arlington in May!! there is so much there, and they usually offe some kind of discount if you purchase there. They also have great seminars to help us learn and be encouraged. I use a mix, some Abeka and some sonlight. I am also part of of a homeschool co-op www.sonlightclasses.org/portal we have over 100 families and we meet once a week, all the classes are parent taught, it is great because my children can take classes that I do not fel comfortable teaching, for example, my son is taking a Japaneese class!! I could never teach him that, and I am the latin teacher, so as parents we all use our strengths and talents to educate our children. they will also help you get a diploma, and they have a graduation etc, it realy feels like a "real" school for the kids!!

I just wanted to give you kudos for your proactive approach. Sometimes kids just can't handle the peer pressure and it is best to just get them out of the enviornment until they mature more and can handle situations more responsibility.

God Bless - E.

Becki,

Here is a site like you mentioned. We are a group of homeschooling parents that offer no longer needed homeschooling material for POSTAGE ONLY. Don't worry that you do not have anything to offer now. That is not the point. We have all been there and this group is a wonderful asset to us all - whether sharing what we have or finding what we need. The web address is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FreeHomeschoolTools_NO-CHAT/

HTH. Oh and welcome to the adventure!

I don't know a whole lot about home schooling, but the Mardel in Irving always has many things to choose from in the home schooling department.

May the Lord bless and keep you and your family!

I was home-schooled and felt like I was very well-prepared for college when the time came. I did the A Beka curriculum that someone else mentioned through the 8th grade, but for high school, my mom changed me over to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School curriculum. It was great for me. It is a curriculum that someone could teach him, but then he would also have a great resource in on-line teachers that he would send his work in to and get great feedback. I don't know how much it costs--it's been several years and my parents took care of that part =) but I think it would be worth checking out. Like I said, I was very well prepared for college, more so than most of the people I knew who graduated from public school. I hope this helps, and good luck!
