I have had my daughter's photos taken by a woman named Elena M., she will go wherever you are...she doesn't have a studio, but I can HIGHLY recommend her and her pricing. Her website is below.
I am looking for somewhere in the Twin Cities to get my newborn's photos taken. I'm hoping to find a studio that has a creative take on portrait photography, but at the same time I don't want to go overboard in what I spend.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for me? Thanks so much in advance!

Reflections photography of Woodbury has a baby panel of 3/6/9/12 months for $75- That is the cheapest package they have but they are really good. The photographer was a photographer for the pentagon. I bought an additional 8x10 of a different pose for $35. They are good quality photos/paper. For just the baby panel its worth it.
We have started using Kiddie Kandids in the Babies R Us in Woodbury and love them. they are not pushy and they know kids

I also had this same problem and was looking for advice and someone gave me the name of oliviawagnerphoto.com so we tried her and she is sooooo good! I am not a person that likes posed, Proex type pictures, but hate paying $40 for a 4x6 when you want so many of them and can't choose! So, she is $150 will go where ever you are and will give you a CD of the entire shoot and you can order all the prints you want from the shoot. We loved what she did for our son and with us, and for that price with all the pics you can't go wrong is how we thought! We will for sure be using her again. We are on her blog, the Robbins Family if you want to check out some of our pics! Good luck!
Hi L.,
I have 2 children, Luke is 6 and Katie is 13 months. When I was pregant with Katie a friend suggested to me that I get my pictures taken showcasing my belly. I liked this idea and did an internet search and found a photographer named Leslie Hale. She is at www.lesliehalephotography.com . She took our pictures at a rented studio and they were wonderful. When our little gal turned 13 or so weeks she took more pictures which were also breath taking. When Katie turned one Leslie came to our house and again, the pictures are priceless.
Her web site states her portrait sessions start at $200. She takes many many pictures and choses the best ones. She gives them to you on a disc and you can have them finished anywhere that you like. She also offers a lab that she has hired to finish the pictures. I have had my pictures finished at places like Target and they turn out nice. Her lab, which is not really HER lab, is better.
I like her because she is easy to work with and is a real artist. I believe she is less expensive than the usual child photographer you would hire, excluding of course penney's etc. The advantage to hiring Leslie is that she is a professional photographer with a great eye. I have never been disappointed. If you are interested I can send email you some photos we have had done. I don't yet have the disc for the 1 year old pictures.

I'm a photographer but no longer working with the public. I am obsessed with pictures and have taken my own child all over.
I would recommend for your traditional photographs to go to Proex. Proex caters to YOUR needs and isn't pushy at selling you packages or anything. They are usually always on time and take appointments seriously.
For some real creative fun stuff that you don't do often but for something different try Sadies in Mall of America.
I've also had pretty good luck at Sears but have sat for a hour or longer past my appointment time waiting....Sometimes they're pushy with sales too.
FYI: Newborn pictures are priceless and I totally recommend doing them but be prepared for a sleeping baby. It's very common for a newborn to not wake up for pictures at all. I've seen this so many times and usually was not sucessful at waking them.
Not sure how convenient he is for you but John Ballew is an excellent child/family photographer with very reasonable rates. Check out his website at jbphoto.com. He is in Crystal (Hwy 100 and 36th Ave.). His studio is right behind his house and he has great outdoor vignettes too. He is very low key so you'll talk to him and wonder about his energy level (:)) but kids really respond to him. We've been going to him for 6 years and I love how all our family pictures of the individual kids or groups of us all have the same look and feel.
You can tell when people go to Flash or someplace like that because they do the same poses with everyone. You get what you pay for. I've been in different people's houses and seen their kids' or family portraits and have been totally been able to predict where they went. I'm a bit of a photography snob but I don't have the big budget to pay for it.
Check John out.
I have been using Shannon Tacheny for my daughters 1 and 2 year pictures. She takes a lot of time and just let's her be relaxed. I love her pictures. They are very natural and artistic. I think she is also very reasonable for a professional photographer.

It looks like you have a lot of options to consider for a photographer for your family's portraits.
I am going to throw another candidate into the pot:
Jim Bird

Jim has a very tranquil studio in Lakeview, but also will go anywhere (including your home) that provides the best comfort for your child because he knows the best pictures can only be taken when the child is comfortable.
His session fee is very reasonable (about $30 for a child, a little more for a family) and you are not locked into a package purchase -- you can buy pictures ala carte. Plus, if you really don't like the photos, he won't even charge you the session fee because he firmly believes and supports his business practice that if he has not produced quality work, you should not pay him.
I certainly think it would be worth making a call and talking with him further about his services.
Good luck capturing the wonderful memories of your precious child.

Hi L.,
We also used Leslie Hale (link in someone else's response above) and she was great. We went to her studio for our first child, then she came to our house for our second child. She did bring a studio light for the in-home shoot. I would definately recommend doing it at your house because kids are so much more at ease. If you are looking for standard studio-type portraits, I would just go to somewhere like Pro-Ex where you only pay for what you buy. The poses are pretty generic, but cheap. But if you want something unique and beautiful, I would recommend Leslie- and since you get the CD, it doesn't end up being much more expensive than the generic studios.
I do photography on the side of my childcare program, which I operate from my home. My business is called TJG Photography. I enjoy taking children's portraits, and have often considered going pro. I currently have a 'special' going until the end of August. I also conduct a series called 'Baby Bits' that consist of unique or simple portraits of your infant/newborns individual body parts as well as capturing the essence of the parent with the child (ie, mom holding infants feet, infant holding wedding bands etc.) The pricing for 'Baby Bits' varies.
