There is a book called "The Out of Sync Child." I don't know of any websites. There is also a clinic in Rockwall.

E.,
I have a 6 year old with SID. It took 4 years to diagnose because its not a "common" disorder. The book "The Out of Sync Child" was a lifesaver for me. I encourage you to go get a copy. There is a SID clinic in Coppell and they do all the testing and therapy. The author of the book was the one who referred me to them. Good Luck...I know how difficult it can be.

My daughter has this. Yes a child can be sensitive in only a few areas, they can cross over or they can have problems in every area. It's a very complex problem. I don't know how old your child is, but my child was seen by a neurologist at 2 years old and he said, amongst other things, she had mild sensory integration problems. At age 3 and a half, it's showing itself much more. We've just had her evaluated and she is about to begin therapy. Occupational therapy is the only thing that will help a child with sensory processing problems. Even if it is a mild case it could interfere with daily life. And since you are asking I'm guessing it probably is already.

I highly recommend getting an evaluation if nothing else. You have to go to someone who specializes in sensory integration problems so not every occupational therapist can help you. And your pediatrician may be of no help either. Mine wasn't. My daughter had started going to Comprehensive Therapy Services in Richardson and I have been pleased. I've just started with them so I can't say how good they are. Just check around in your area and with your insurance. The sooner the better. The younger your child is, the more flexible the brain and the more positive the prognosis. That's what I'm learning. But it's not something that can be cured. You and your child need to learn how to manage and cope with it. I'm no expert but I have spent the last 2 and a half years looking for answers for my daughter and I feel I'm just now getting them. Feel free to email with questions if you'd like.

Good luck.

This may help, they are also calling it DSI due to the confustion with SIDS. In my opinion yes. My son has it, but not severe. He has it with Bipolar. He can also have flare ups to where it is worse one day then another. So I honestly believe the conidtion can vary. There is alot of helpful books out there to teach you more about it. The Out of Sync child is really good. I have read parts of it before. If you are looking for any websites heres some.

Hi E.,
My son has sensory issues. He was evaluated at Sally Fryers office in Plano. It is Integrative Pediatric Associates. ###-###-####. You can have a mild case. But it can interfere with many things. All of Sally's therapists are trained in SI.
Your insurance may cover it too. Good Luck

There is a nonprofit organization in Dallas called SI Challenge, which stands for Sensory Integration. I think the website is www.sichallenge.org. They have a listing of area resources and they also put on lectures, workshops and family camps.

If you are talking about SIDS, meaning sudden infant death syndrome, than it would seem that there is no way to have a mild case..the baby has to have died with out any other underlying cause for SIDS to be declared. If however you are thinking of something else, please clarify, and maybe we can help out :)

My daughter also has a very mild case. I also recommend kid-power.org and there are lots of links from there. I also recommend the book "The Out of Sync Child" and the book "The Out of Sync Child Has Fun".

There are two SPD yahoo groups---one is a christian group and support mainly, the other is very informative---SPD tips.

Just as an aside, because so many do not understand, the name has changed from SID to SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder or Dysfunction) to avoid confusion for those who do not know of the disorder.

God bless and you will be in my prayers.

Yes, a mild case is very possible. My son is currently being treated at Sensory Star Center. Kathleen Morris, the director, is quoted quite often in Out of sync child. They will evaluate and also let you know if they can help. My son has come a great distance in the last 6 months since getting treatment.
