I am looking for some great dessert recipes that are not really hard to fix, time wise or really expensive. We are doing a little more entertaining lately and since I do not eat sweets, I am having trouble with the desserts. Any tried and true recipes that you can share will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great recipes. They all sound delicious. I am sure I will be trying each of them. I have used HomeMade Gourmet and Tastefully Simple (used to be a consultant for them) but find them to be expensive for a large crowd and a little more sugar than I like. I like the homemade stuff b/c I usually serve a large group (20-25) and cost when cooking for that many can be an issue. Thanks again.

Dump Cake

1 (20 oz) can of cherry pie filling
1 (20 oz) can of crushed pineapple (with juice)
A cup or so of walnuts (or pecans)
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 1/2 stick of butter

Grease a 9 x 13 pan. Dump everything but the butter. Mix and spread in the pan. Then, cut the butter into "pats". distribute evenly all across the top. Bake at 350 for about 45 min to an hour. (butter will be melted and it will be kinda brown)Let it cool, then refridgerate.

You can eat it by itself or if its still a little warm, it goes well with vanilla ice cream.

WARNING: This is some sweet stuff!!!
I worked in a restuarant for alot of years and I would make this (in bigger batches off coarse) and it was the dessert that was included in a lunch special. It was all the rage!!!

P.S. If you buy the cake mix, just get the "cheapy" store brand. They work just as well as the high dollar ones!!

I thought about it for a minute and realized (with my old age!!!) you dont mix the ingredients. You layer them. Start with the pineapple, then the cherry, nuts and the cake on top. followed by the butter pats. Sorry :(

One I've made several times and it's always a huge hit is super easy. It's Angel Lush Cake. What you need is instant vanilla pudding mix, a tub of frozen whipped topping, a can of crushed pinneapple and a store bought angel food cake.

Thaw the whipped topping in your refrigerator, mix the dry pudding mix and the can of pinneapple (undrained) together and then fold in the thawed whipped topping.

Cut the angel food cake into three horizontal layers and spread the pinneapple mixture over each layer, stacking as you go. Put the last of the mixture on the very top and you can top it with strawberries or mixed berries or nothing.

This would also be good as a trifle, by cutting the angel food cake into small squares and layering with the mixture in a bowl.

It looks good presentation wise and costs very little to make. The angel food cake at $2-3 is the most expensive part. But it's worth it since Angel Food can be difficult to bake. Good luck!

Homemade Gourmet has some really yummy desserts that are super easy to make! My favorite is the Basic Cheesecake...just add 2 blocks cream cheese(you can use the low fat kind) and cool whip. Just dump the cheesecake mix with the cheese and then fold in the cool whip, put in premade grahm cracker crust pie then top with remaining cool whip. You can add fruit on top. Then just let it sit in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Your guest will rave about it!

This is kind of a fall recipe called Pumpkin Crunch Pie, but I think it would be good anytime of year: 1 can of pumpkin, 1 can of evaporated milk (reg soup size), 1/2 cup of sugar, 4 eggs, 2tsp pumpkin pie spice, 1tsp salt, 1 bx of yellow cake mix, 1 cup of pecans, 2 sticks of butter; preheat oven 350, Mix can of pumpkin pie, evaporated milk, sugar, eggs, pumpkin pie spice; Pour into 13X9 casserole dish; with hands sprinkle the yellow cake mix over the pumpkin pie mixture, spinkle pecans over the cake mix, place butter slices over the top of the pecans and cake mix, try to cover as much as possible because this is what cooks the cake part. Bake 50-60 minutes or until toothpick/fork comes out of the cake clean, serve with ice cream or whip cream. Good luck and have fun with all of your entertaining!
