My grandson was diagnosed with "Jobs Syndrome" or hyper IGE. He has severe eczema and multiple allergies. It is very difficult to find food that he can safely eat. He is 3 years old and wants to eat what everyone else has. Any ideas where I can find recipes like this?

So What Happened?

I cannot express the gratitude I felt when I read these responses. I actually got choked up. Right after I made this request one of my son's was in a very serious car accident and is now wheelchair bound for a few months. I feel really bad that I did not thank every one sooner but, I really do appreciate all the very helpful responses I received. I did forget to include peanuts as a major allergy. Actually he is allergic to a lot of other things but the reaction is not as bad so, the allergist said to try them periodically. Once again thank you all very much and I will be checking out websites for my daughter.

There are a ton of good websites out there for celiac/gluten free recipes. just google gluten free & you will find them. Most of these also include recipes for other alergies as well since they people often have more than one.

Try Livingwithout.com it is a bi montly magazine that deals with allergies & it also has great recipes on the site.

Hi A.,

You need to get your hands on some "vegan" cookbooks. Vegans do not eat ANY animal products, so vegan recipes will be free of dairy and eggs. The only thing you would then need to watch for in vegan recipes is whether or not they have wheat, and plenty do not. (Vegan recipes will also not have meat in them, but you can certainly tailor the recipes to include meat.) Vegan cookbooks will also guide you to substitutes, for example, What is a good substitute for eggs when baking? (I don't know the answer!)

Also, get as many regular cookbooks as you can, and flip to the fruits and vegetables section for ideas.

You also need to find a store that sells more of the specialized foods for people with allergies. I've seen 'cheese made from nuts and soy", "ice cream" make from coconut milk, and wheat-free "flours" so you can make your own goodies at home! If you are in a rural area, this will be tricky, but below is a list of co-ops in South Dakota. Many co-ops offer discounts if you buy cases of a product, so if you find some things you like, it may be worth the drive every now and then to stock up.

Also, come to think of it, we just had an egg-, dairy-, and wheat-free hotdish:
1 lb of hamburger (or any ground meat)
1 large onion, chopped
1 large can of diced tomatoes (include the juice)
1 cup of cooked white rice
1 small can of black olives, sliced
salt, pepper, and chili powder to taste

In large skillet, brown hamburger and onion; drain fat. Mix remaining ingredients and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Hello,
there is a great website, godairyfree.com that has a ton of recipes like this. Not all of them will be dairy, egg and wheat free, but each recipe will tell you what it's free of. Does your grandson need to cut out gluten or wheat? If a recipe says it's vegan, it won't contain dairy or eggs. I recently cut out dairy and soy from my diet, partly for me and partly because my 5 month old also has eczema, and the doctor thinks it's due to allergies. Anyway, I've done a bunch of research to try to find food that I can eat. I know there's more websites too, so I'll check and get back to you with more websites. I know it seems like you'll never find anything that he can eat, but it will get easier, and there are yummy recipes out there! :) I'll respond again when I find the other websites.

I don't have any recipes but wonder if he has seen a chiropractor? They are,of course, not a cure all but many allergies have been helped by a chiropractor. I recently started seeing one and it has been awesome (I went because of migraines and I no longer have them). I have done more and more research on them and am amazed at what I am learning. Just a thought. Good Luck! I am sure it has been really tough for you and his mother. It is hard enough feeding a non-allergic child. Also, just remembered, my cousin has and egg allergy and uses Egg Replacer in her recipes at home.

I second Cassandra's advice on recipes. I also know that there are corn-based breads out there which may be an alternative to wheat, but I'm not sure if they use egg or not. Barley is also a grain not related to wheat, if you can get him to eat that. :) Rice is another starch that I'm sure your daughter is aware of.

Obviously the hardest part is eating "regular" food around your grandson that he can't have. I would suggest consulting a dietitian for meal ideas and ways of coping with the "big picture" at meals and family gatherings.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

A few months back I saw a cookbook author on a tv show promoting her new book. I believe the cookbook was called ''8 degrees of Ingredients'' I'm sure if you google it the website will come up. All the recipes inside EXCLUDE the 8 most allergic foods ie: dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, treenuts, etc. (I don't remember all of them) I know for sure the recipes do not include the ones you are watching out for. It would a great tool for you and your daughter to have!

Good Luck!

As the mother of a Celiac, I definitely agree with searching for gluten free recipes as a starting point. Many of them are indeed dairy and egg free. If you're looking for quick pre-made meals for him too, try Allegaroo (you can find it in the natural section at Cub). They make microwavable pasta dishes that are free of most common allergens. I've tried a bite of my daughter's and it tastes like the "real deal." My daughter really likes those. I would also recommend shopping at Fresh & Natural Foods and Whole Foods. A lot of their foods are gluten free (and they even have them labeled as such!) and I believe there is labeling for allergens as well. Good luck!

my son is allergic to eggs wheat dairy and peanuts. I know it sounds very overwhelming. I have had to do a lot of research but some cereals are the best. I make rice crispy bars with his milk free butter (smart balance) and add soy or sunbutter to them. I also make corn bread. If you need other support please contact me and I will give you my number ____@____.com I said I know how overwlming it is, my son was diagnosed with these when he was ten months old so it was even harder to find soft enough foods.
Good luck

Hi A.! I am so sorry that your grandson has to deal with this! A couple of things that might help....
-Quinoa (keen-wah) is a wonderful wheat free grain. You can buy quinoa pasta, bread and flour.
- potato flour and brown rice flour are great alternatives to wheat flour.
-Cashew milk is a great milk substitute. Grind 1/4 cup RAW cashews with 1/2 cup water in the blender until smooth. Add sea salt and use instead of milk in mashed potatoes!
-Almond milk is GREAT on granola!
-Ener-G brand makes a wonderful egg replacer

"The Guilt Free Gourmet" by Vicki B. Griffin is a vegan cookbook that is egg and dairy free. Recipes that contain wheat can easily be used with a wheat alternative. Anything can have meat added to it too :)
If you need any recipes for specific things just let me know! I have done elimination diets in the past and am very familiar with cutting out allergens!
Are you near Sioux Falls? There are a couple of health food stores there that are very helpful with any questions. Also, Hy-Vee carries lots of things in their natural departments. There is another health food store in Watertown that I like.
Your whole family will have to make changes and it sounds like you are up for the challenge! If I think of any more products that are readily available I will let you know!
Blessings on you!

Take a look at the Feingold program. I know they have a website. Their diet is directed at ADD/ADHD, but they have info on what foods/brands are free of certain allergens, and they have recipe resources and stuff.
