I am looking for fun parks in the Sacramento area. I have a 1 1/2 year old and he loves to climb, slide and swing. We live off of South Watt Ave. near Highway 50, but I'm willing to travel a little ways if the park is really neat.

Have you tried Oki park over on Weissman off of Folsom. There's a cool park on La Riviera with a Pirate ship climbing thing, its between Howe and Watt. Also I enjoyed McKinley park when my kids were small. Oki park has a mushroom pool open in the summer, small wading pool for little kids only. Other wading pool parks are Colonial and Bertha Henschel, there are more too and they are run by Sac City Parks and Rec dept. Come to think of it there's a nice little play park behind the Coloma community center where the SC Parks and Rec offices are off of T street. Also have you gotten a membership to Fairy Tale Town? its enclosed and since it costs money to get in you don't get too many weirdos. I live in Rosemont.

There is a really nice park near Mather Airforce base. If you want to travel there is a cool water park in Folsom.

I can recommend two that we like.

Howe Park at Howe and Cottage just redid their play ground and it really caters to climbing now. I have not seen play equipment like that in any park. They also have an off leash dog park which is important to me as my dog can go play and then my nephew can go play too my daughter is to old for play grounds now but that is okay.

The other one is the Carmichael Park on Grant/Whitney and Fair Oaks Blvd. A very big play ground it was my daughters favorite when she was little and it is within eye sight of the dog park also. My nephew can play for hours there if given the chance.

Someone was just telling me about free water parks in town! I think there is one near Bell.

She was supposed to send me a list of great summer park ideas (I took the "cool" part of your park request literally) and your post prompts me to email off a reminder that I need that info soon!

I also like Southside Park, it's the best playground park in town in my opinion (better than McKinley, and I never thought I'd say that!) it's on W and 6th. Lots of toddler climbing and swings. :o)

Hmm...and after reading the first response, I guess we need to check out Anatolia's park! I even think that was one of the ones mentioned on the list. As soon as I have it, I'll post it here.

I live near Southside Park on W and 6th (downtown, off of 10th street exit). The park is a childrens dream come true. There is a pond, tennis courts and the track around the park is huge and a public pool as well. The toddler part of the park has at least 2 slides and a lot of things to climb. There are swings and other stationary 'rides' too. The part of the park for the bigger kids has a lot of cools stuff. I am especially fons of the huge pirate ship that rocks back and forth. I think it's the best park I've ever been to. it's lit at night and while sometimes there are the occasional dowtown 'weirdos' and homeless at the park I've never once been bothered or felt unsafe.

If you live near 50 & Watt and want something close try a couple of the parks in the American River Drive area. We often go to Ashton Park and Sheffield Park. They are nice, clean and lots of nice people to talk to.

For a really cool park that is a little bit of a drive try Jefferson Park in South Natomas - it is hidden deep in a neighborhood there but has the most awesome, huge wooden fort structure for kids to run around. There is also a smaller fenced in toddler area with places to climb and a slide and some fun things like a big xylophone. The best way to get there is go up Truxel and turn left on Pebblewood (it sort of winds around a little bit). You'll see a school on your right and make the first right after the school and then the next right. You would never randomly find it by driving around. My almost 3 year old just LOVES this park and has since he was 2.

Have fun!!

Hi S....
I am also a mother of an 18 month old and nanny to a 20 month old. We enjoy going to the Land Park playground because it's close to us, but as others have mentioned McKinley is a great park. Also, Southside Park on W and 6th downtown, I think, is an excellent park. The ground of the whole thing is foam and it has several unique structures for all ages.
Have fun!

You have to pay a small fee to get in, but Fairy Tale town is a great place for kids who like to climb. It's also nice because it is fenced in and because you do have to pay to get in, you will not find the park "residents" sleeping on the lawn like you might find in some of the other parks.

Check out McKinley... it's downtown, next to the library there and has the whole nine yards... my kids just love the wooden maze and remember to bring some bread for the duckies in the pond! And the gardens are totally blooming this time of year.
It's actually listed on the sacramento parks website.

McKinley Park is a lot of fun for climbers. It's like an expansive shire, mostly made of wood, with towers and pathways, all safe for little ones. Plenty of swings, slides of many sizes, and things to climb on, and right next to a library and a pond with ducks too. My daughter loves climbing the "wiggly stairs."

McKinley Park is between H & E streets, and between Alhambra & 33rd St.

There is a very neat park over in the new community of Anatolia. You can take 50 to Sunrise. Make a right onto Sunrise. When you you get to the new community of houses, Make a right and you can see the park on the left side of the road as you are turning. Make a left into the neighborhood and then a left for the parking lot.

It has huge faux rocks to climb. A Huge spider man web rope climb, lots of slides and playground to climb. There is a sand area for digging so bring some shovels. There are swings, a picnic area with BBQ and Sinks. The best part of the park is the motion activated water play area. It shoots fountains up and the kids can run through the water so you need to bring something to wet clothes in a another set of dry clothes to change into when you leave.

There's a cool one up here in Natomas called Fort Natomas Park. It looks like a huge wooden fort structure, but it's actually not wood (so no splinters, rotting, etc.). There's also a tot play structure that's pretty enclosed, for when you don't feel like chasing your little one down.

I can't remember all the street names, but if you look it up online, it's adjacent to Jefferson Elementary school. YOu would take the West El Camino exit off I-5.
