Looking for Clothes, Shoes and Accessories for 1 Year Old

My son just turned one and I am having a hard time finding clothes and now shoes for him. We got a lot of baby clothes as gifts and hand me downs - but now he is out growing them. Found some nice affordable things at Target - but no shoes or some accessories/toys I want (like the alphabet you stick on the bath walls). I know of expensive boutiques for children in Chicago, but what about affordable children stores (like Target - but more child focused)? Or any recommendations on department stores?

What can I do next?

For play clothes, I always go to Old Navy or Carter's. Once my son got older and I could better predict what size he'd be in the future (2T lasts a long time) Babygap or Gymboree at the end of each season have great markdowns, and Gymboree always has coupons on top of their sales - I got a ton of clothes for under $5 a piece. You can sign up to be on their mailing list, or they often have coupons in parenting magazines. So at the end of each fall, for example, I'd buy my son's wardrobe for next fall. I also got a Gap Silver card so I could keep an eye on clearanced items and order them online without paying shipping.

As for toys, Kohl's also has a good selection of toys and they're always on sale, sometimes up to 50% off. Also, check out TJ Maxx and Marshall's. They have books, educational toys, a decent selection of good quality toys like Melissa & Doug, for way less than what they cost at Toys R Us.

I love to bargain-hunt, so these are the best deals I've found. Good luck!

I agree with the other responses for clothes, Old Navy, Childrens Place, Walmart, ect. I would also add Gymboree when they have sales have some cute styles for boys. They always have coupons in the parenting magazines for 20% off and they will honor that on top of any current sale price, so sometimes you can get some really cute well made stuff at a reasonable price. I bought the cutest little sport coat for under 15 bucks! I would also add Marshall's/TJ MAXX but tht is hit or miss- and you need some time to sort through stuff!

As for toys (and shoes too) Babies r us seems to have a decent selection of toys specifically with the baby/toddler in mind. They usually have coupons as well, but a little harder to come by. I think you have to buy something in the store and then they give them to you for the next time period. Marshalls has unique toys at great prices too.

I like to research toys online on Amazon too, to check out other parent reviews and also to compare pricing. With Amazon they offer free shipping when you spend $25 (very easy to do) and there is no tax - which can be a big plus when you live in Chicago! They ship things out pretty fast so things arrive a lot sooner (usually) than their estimated arrival time. Just be sure to check the price at another retailer (like Walmart, Target, ect) to be sure they are offering a good price. Sometimes they jack the prices up on some items (im not sure why!).

One last thing about shoes - I have found that boys shoes are sooooo hard to find, (in cute styles. I have had the best luck at Babies r Us & Target, but thats not saying much. Luckily, I dont think boys need as many pairs as you would buy for a girl, so I go online and maybe pay a little more for a cuter style and just buy less. A lot of places offer free shipping. My favorite brand for boys is See Kai Run. So cute!! and the materials they work with are so nice! My son loves them and has a really easy time walking in them (unlike some of the other heavy bottomed shoes out there).

Hope this helps!

I would also suggest Children's Place and Old Navy for clothes. For the alphabet you stick on the wall we bought a pack for my niece on Amazon, but maybe Babies R Us or Toys R Us carry them as well?

I love kohls and I think they are a little cheaper than Target. Right now they are offering so many discounts. May want to check on line to see if they have coupons. I know they have a big sale(any extra 15-20% off of everything) on top of already reduced prices this weekend!

Good luck!

I got the foam letters for the bath walls at Target, in the baby dept. I usually find deals on clothes at Kohls and Carsons, but my favorite place is Once Upon a Child. Gently used clothes and toys, really everything. Not sure where you are in the city but there is one at Harlem and Foster. This is their website http://www.ouac.com/

Good luck!

Hi L.,

I don't know where you live, but there are good stores throughout the area... We tend to buy most of our clothes gently used -- it's more economical and reduces consumption so it's better for the environment. I would recommend Hand Me Downs in Evanston, Barely Used in Wilmetter and Once Upon a Child. Once Upon a Child is a chain of independently-owned franchises throughout the country. I haven't been to any here, but I used to go all the time when we lived in Michigan and LOVED it. They have lots of stuff, it's good quality, recent, and cheap! Check out ouac.com for locations.

Best,
R.

Dear L., when my kids were little I used to go to Old Navy or Kmart, Sears, Kohls. These are all nice stores to buy kids clothes. You don't want to spend and arm and a leg for there clothes because they grow so quickly especially when they are so little still. Stick with those stores and you will get good quality clothes. Enjoy your baby. They grow up too quick. Good Luck!!

Hi L.,
I had the same problem once my daughter turned 1. Her entire wardrobe comes from the Carter's store. I know there is a store on the north side of the city and one in the southwest suburbs. There is also an outlet store in the Aurora outlet mall. Their clothes are very affordable and better yet, always on sale. As far as toys, we stuck with Walmart, Kmart and Target. Hope this helps!

Hi! I know how frustrating that can be. First, there's a carters on clybourn and north ave. B4 u go google for coupons-it always helps! Then, if you haven't found it all I would check out old navy on north ave, craigslist under baby/child, or ebay. For free cothing join your local freecycle ____@____.com. There's also marshall's, tj maxx, and filene's basement too!
Hope those help! Take care and happy shopping! C.

There is a great thrift store just for kids on Western at Leland. Its called "Thrifty Baby". Owned by moms who are sisters and are super helpful.

They also buy back clothes/stuff that your son may have outgrown.

Good luck!

Garage sales..and Walmart were my salvations when my kids were growing up.(Garage sales because chilren so often out grow clothes long before they can wear them out..sometimes they out grow them before they can wear them once!) That and some VERY easy patterns and a sewing machine.. The pants pattern was a single piece cut twice.. and the Shirts Two pieces.. When you get more skilled with the machine ..you'll have more clothes than your kids will ever be able to wear..!! Shoes?.Go to Walmart..or Toys R Us. ( Most often less expensive than Babies R Us.
