Hi Moms,
Just looking for recommendations on a portable 'learning system' or leap pad style product. I guess I'm not sure what is out there and what would be good for airplane and car travel. Any advice on what to buy or not to buy would be appreciated! My daughter is turning 4 and does enjoy books very much. She has enjoyed her "Cinderella Computer" although I'm looking for something a little more versatile... Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi E.
My son is 4 and has a Leapster and he loves it. It isn't to expensive and it has been well worth it. My daughter that is going to be 3 in a month also loves it. She doesn't know really how to play with it, but she tries. I hope you find something she will love. Good Luck!

I love the products from V-tech, we have used the laptop n go, and the doodle and draw. My daughter is 5 now and we just got her a Leapster. We were going to get the V-Tech version, it costs less and the games are less but when I saw it in person I felt it was so big that we decided to get the leapster-found a great deal on amazon for games and unit. It worked great on our recent drive to Florida. If you go with that type of game, I would not buy their carrying case look at the cases intended for small DVD players instead. It works great, is less money and you can hold more games in it when it comes to the age of getting games.

I just took an 11 hour plane ride with my 2 and 4 year old to South America. We have the Leapster 2 and the Leapster Tag pin. Both were wonderful. You can plug headphones into them to keep the noise down. We have several books that go with the tag pin and the animal flash cards which are really neat. I highly recommend either or both of these products!

Hello, I know your probably not looking to spend 100.00 on a hand held game for your 4 year old but my 6 and 9 year old love their Nintendo DS's. I bought them for them 1 1/2 ago because we were taking a trip to Mexico. Their are alot of games that are educational. I truly believe they are worth the money. I should also mention they started with the Hand held leapster. Which is also great. You can find them pretty cheap on ebay. Theirs just got passed down to my son whos almost 2 and he loves playing some of the games already. The down fall are the games are not to cheap, but like i said before check ebay.

My five-year-old has the new Leapster (small hand held device) and it's wonderful. It really keeps him occupied on journeys and you can get quite a few games for her age. I think they're around $50 dollars and the games are $20 or $25. Good luck - Alison

I would highly recommend books on tape/CD. Libraries have a huge assortment to choose from. This would also help keep Maya entertained, especially if it was a book with pictures. Sofia could hold the book so they both could see it, and be the one to turn the pages. You could get a kid-friendly CD/tape player with headphones or listen to them over the car's system.

No matter what you chose to buy, I'd recommend your local CraigsList website's For Sale section, rather than e-bay. There are a lot of local people trying to make ends meet by selling things that way.

There are those Leapster 2 handhelds (around $50). I got our daughter, whom was 5 years old at the time, a pink one. She absolutely loves it! It comes with learning games on it and you can buy more too.

We had a ton of kids over to the house and the tip of her stylus got broken somehow. We contacted the company and for $5 we were able to get a replacement.

My kids have a leap pad and love it. The books are kinda expensive, but they have tons of stuff in them besides the story, like games. Sometimes you can find them on sale. Also, non electronic, my kids love their magna doodles for travel time. The don't like the travel size though, we use the regular big ones because they have so much more space to draw on.

I have purchased tag pens, by leapfrog, for both my 4 and 5 year old. You may be looking for more versitility, but my kids love that they are actually "reading" a real book with it. (they were never anywhere as interested in the leap pads) My soon to be 2 year old will be getting one soon, she loves it too. You can download 5-6 books onto the pen at a time, but you can listen to the whole story, "read" it word by word, or you have the option to play multiple games in each book. It fits nicely into the case, and I can't say enough about it. It also has math and other learning applications you can purchase as well. You can get headphones for more volume control. good luck in whatever you go with.

When my son was 3 (he's 9 now) I purchased the original leap pad. The book that came with it kept him wonderfully occupied during a 24 hr. car ride!! Because you can purchase different books in different age levels, this "toy" grows with the child for many years. There are even books that teach languages, assist in reading and math skills, and all books have game-like features, so lots to do. Found it to be a fabulous "investment"!
