For GYN, you have to go through the military or change to Standard. They will not refer you out. You only have the choice on Standard. I really wish you did have a choice. But the midwives are good at Evans.
I am new to Colorado Springs and looking for a good OB/GYN in the Broadmoor / Ft. Carson area that takes TriCare. I prefer an open-minded practitioner that is open to non-standard ideas. I am very interested in natural childbirth, hypnobirthing, doulas, etc. during childbirth and would like to plan for those during my next pregnancy.

Hi there H.,
I am an Air Force wife that had all of my care at Evans. They were pretty great! Until my pregnancy became high risk, I was seen by a midwife, then they switched me over to one of the OB's when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was very apprehensive at first but found that I received an exceptionally high level of care and really felt like all the doctors and other personnel in the department really cared about me and what was going on in my pregnancy. I agree with the other person that thinks you would have to pay out of pocket, they seem pretty strict with that here, if the care is available on the base they expect you would use it, or have good reason why they should give you a referral for outside care. If you still want to go outside of the hospital, I would try checking the TriCare website for this region. That might have a list of accepting providers. Best of luck to you.
I heartily recommend Dr. Hovenga or Dr. Jill Murray with Women's Associates - ###-###-####. They are right off of Pikes Peak and Institution - so a bit farther than you mentioned, but they are both totally worth it!
Good luck and congratulations!!
I second Dr. Hovenga but I am not sure that she takes Tricare. Another good group down south is Blue Skies ###-###-####. They have two CNM's on staff but they rotate call with the OB's, so you are not guaranteed to have them at your birth. As far as Evans Hospital, I have had pretty good experiences there. They have a midwifery model of care for low risk moms.

Hi H.,
my question would also be, why you don't go to Evans? I think if you want to go see a doctor off-post, you will either have to change to Tricare Standard or pay it out of pocket. Otherwise more of us would go, if it would be that easy.
I see the midwifes at Evans and I feel really comfortable there.
Why wouldn't you go to Evans? You can tell them that you don't want any pain meds. In addition, the midwives do the majority of managing the delivery it is simply overseen by the physician. I have delivered two children at Evans and will deliver my third there in August. They are very good and follow your wishes especially if you are clear iand firm about what you want.
I also go to Women's Associates for general gyn stuff and really like them. You might also interview the midwives in town to see which OBs they work with, who you like and feel comfortable with, and who takes Tricare. There are several listed in the phone book.
Hi H., I too am a military wife in the Colo Spgs area. We ended up giving birth on Ft Carson. The NP's and Dr's seemed open minded. I did have a doula who was the absolute best!!! Her name is Kim Lattau and her number is ###-###-####. She came to my house was very engaged in my birth. ABSOLUTE BEST!!! Good luck.
Hugs, A.
