We are moving to the Austin area this summer and I am trying to find an elementary school that will meet my son's needs. He has autism (moderate to severe end of the spectrum) and I want to find a school that has an appropriate program.

Any recommendations or info would be very very very helpful!!

Thanks!

S.

I can not remember the name, but there is a charter school which takes regular needs and special needs kids. I would just use google.

I am an educator in Austin.... Ironically, Round Rock does an AWESOME job with meeting the needs of children with autism. All public school must provide the educational support for the students in their community - some just do it better than others. If you have specific schools you are looking at, I could give you a heads up.
Good luck, and hang in there!

The Odyssey School has an excellent reputation for teaching children with special learning needs. They are at 4407 Red River Street, 78751. Their phone number is ###-###-####, and their website is www.odysseyschool.com.

I wonder if Elizabeth meant SAILL. I have a good friend who works specifically with Autistic children and she has said NOTHING but good things about this school. It is a charter school. It is a year-round school and they currently have openings, but don't wait too long because they will fill up. Special needs kids are in classes with the general population. If the 6th grade class is learning about the Earth, they may be writing a paper with illustrations of the many layers of the Earth's crust. A child with Down's Syndrome would be in the same class, however, her assignment may be to express her knowledge of the Earth's crust with clay.

Hi, Stephanie!

There are a few private schools for kids with autism. My daughter has a speech and language delay and she's been going to Moore-Weis Children's Center of Austin for the last couple of years. She has improved dramatically since starting there. I know of one another school, The Capital School.

I hope that helps. Hope all goes well with your move!
