Looking for Advice from Anyone Whose Children Have Had Their Tonsils Out at a Yo

I just found out last night that my 2 year old needs to have his tonsils taken out as well as possibly have tubes put in his ears at the same time due to fluid in the ears....won't know much until they do the hearing test to find out how much damage has been done. I am not familiar at all with either of these procedures and from what I was told it is an outpatient surgery and then he is sent home. My concern is how am I going to get a 2 year old to drink liquid after having surgery???? I heard the recovery for this is the worst part. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Hi,

I have a friend whose son had his tonsils removed (he's about 4 or 5 years old when it was done)...My friend said that few days after the operation, her son ate no solid foods but ice cream, ice drops and popsicles (lots of them!). Her son is now 6 years old and very healthy. I always thought that when the tonsils are removed, one will always have colds (the reason why my mom did not want to have mine removed when I was younger) but her son does not show this. He does not get sick even without getting a flu shot during flu season. He also stopped snoring.

Hope this helps.

Hi K.,
My son has had tubes. They really weren't too bad. He laid around that afternoon, probably mostly from being under, but he was fine.
My daughter had her adenoids out and was absolutely fine after the surgery.
Tonsils, from what the dr. said are a little bit worse, though.
Does your 2 yr old like popsicles. That would be the best thing.
You'll be surprised at how quickly they recover.
Good luck to you.

The way to get kids to drink is to let them have very soft sherbert or ice cream. This is the "chicken soup" remedy for tonsilectomy.

My daughter had her tonsils and adnoids removed when she was 3. She mainly ate popsicles and she was fine with the painkiller they gave her. Just make sure you give them the painkiller on the schedule the doctor gives you so they are not in so much pain. She also slept a lot afterwards but she was crankier than usual and that is expected. Good luck.
