Looking for a Reputable Childcare Agency to Search for a Nanny

Has anyone used an agency to find a nanny? If so, which one did you use and would you recommend it? I hear the placements costs run $1,000-$2,000. Is this pretty standard? I need to find a full time nanny and don't want to place an ad in the paper. I also want to have background checks done and thought that an agency would take care of all that for me. Is this the best way to go or has someone else done something different that would help. I live in the Western suburbs so I don't know if there is an agency that specializes in my area. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

What can I do next?

D.,
We have found fine candidates through Midwest Nannies. They are located is St. Charles, so they specialize in the western suburbs. www.midwestnanny.com
Yes, I believe their placement fee for a nanny is a minimum of $1600.00. You can buy a kind of insurance policy, though. I highly recommend that you contact them.
I had some bad experiences on Sittercity. You really are doing all of the legwork, though it is a good resource for bringing people together. Midwest Nannies does this work for you.
You can also purchase a manual from them. For @$36.00, they will show you how to go about finding a nanny on your own.
Good luck.

I tried using a nanny search agency on two different occasions and both times they failed to come up with any appropriate candidates. It was quite upsetting how poor the candiadtes were - they are still a business and in my experience, did not have my interests and concerns at heart.

We found our wonderful nanny by posting an ad on craigslist. From there we weeded through over 100 applicants, emailed with a select 25, had telephone conversations with about 10 from that point and made in-person interviews with the 5 top candidates. I chose one and had her meet with my husband and children. We then hired a private investigator - several specialize in nanny background checks.

I am a Local Childcare Coordinator for an au pair agency. If you're considering live-in care, this is a great option! We have offices in all of the countries we recruit from so each person is screened in person. We do the background checks. All au pairs have experience (and references) and speak English. They provide 45 hours of childcare and the average cost is $285 per week.
Feel free to contact me if you would like to know more about hosting an au pair.
