Looking for a Good Moving Company for a Short Distance Move

We will be moving in a few months - it's a short-distance move - only 10 miles from door to door. I would like to hire a mover for the large items and am looking for recommendations, experiences, or those to stay away from! I am pretty overwhelmed with the thoughts of moving from our home - we've been here 8 years - so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
L.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great responses! I have heard about the scams in the past but didn't realize they were so common. I went to Clark Howard's website because I remembered him talking about the scams and found a great website that lists movers and if people have reportedly had scamming problems with them. It's www.movingscam.com Hopefully if we get all the bugs worked out with the house we are building we can get packing and get on our way! Have a great day!

I've heard good things about the Two guys and a truck company. You're basically paying for their time and you can have them do whatever you want. I like that because some companies require that THEY pack the items to be held liable for it and then they take forever overpacking things like towels and charging you for it.
I would recommend that you don't go through a contractor for a larger moving company. I.e. When we moved here we hired Van Lines which we thought was a major company. Turned out smaller contracting companies bid for the work through vanlines so the people that moved us had only picked up the job. We had a 4 bedroom house and they quoted us somewhere around $3000 and then the morning of the move they called from our storage unit (we were already here in orlando) and said it would be around $7000. Luckily we ended up being able to have the storage unit company drive our stuff up for around $4000 before the other company ever packed our stuff up. Just be careful and get all the facts about the company you sign with. We're also getting ready to do about a 2 mile move and I think we're going with the 2 men and a truck to do the heavy stuff and then we're going to do the smaller stuff ourselves with a uhaul. Best of luck whatever you do! I know that whether its a 1 mile or 500 mile move it can be equally stressful.

L., I wish I could recommend a mover for you, but anyone I know who's used a mover recently (myself included) has shared their own tale of shady dealings. Please understand that Florida law *allows* for movers to quote you one price, then demand more money once they get your items in the (locked!) truck, essentially holding your belongings hostage until you come up with sometimes thousands of dollars.

Here's hoping you can find someone honest and reliable!

I would recommend "2 Guys and a truck". We used them a year ago. They were very reliable, right on time, reasonable in price, and about the same distance you're looking for. I think it's not really just "2 guys" b/c I see their trucks all over, but we were very happy with their service.
