Hi moms, I am looking for a new family doctor in the McKinney area. I really need a doctor who is patient, caring and concerned for the well being of both the individual and family. I have 4 kids and we need a doctor who understands how to treat the whole family when one member gets sick. I really hate having one child diagnosed with strep throat and then the doctor not treating the whole family. My current doctors office makes me bring in each family member as they get sick. This not only costs lots of money and time but is annoying. As a result I have sick family members for up to 8 weeks as it travels around. So if anyone can suggest a great family doctor in the McKinney area who really understands what it means to treat a family I would greatly appreciate it.

What can I do next?

I read this and have to respond..... the worst thing a doctor can do is prescribe antibiotics to the entire family. This is so irresponsible and contributing to the resistance of antibiotics that used to work for strep and common infections. They don't work anymore because of this mind set and the pressure put on docs to prescrible when meds aren't needed. You do have to pay to see a doctor for this very reason... and thankfully you have healthcare that is accessible to you to come and go as you please.

Kudos to the docs that want to see you in person to make accurate and responsible diagnosis!

I live in Frisco, but I travel to McKinney to visit with Dr. Blatt. I have 2 small kids (1 1/2 & 3) & she has been a great source of info & is great with the kids. I highly recommend her & her nurse is awesome as well.

My family sees and loves Dr. Rhonda Hopkins with Snyder Family Hopkins Family Medicine. Her office is located across from the McKinney Medical Center.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but I have to agree with Roxana. It is irresponsible to treat the whole family when the doctor has not seen/examined each member. It is not safe to broadly treat the family as if they have strep, when only one member has been confirmed to have it. From a financial point of view, doctors need to be paid for what they do, too. Family practitioners are on the bottom of the totem pole of doctors. They are required to do the most amount of work, and make much less than other types of doctors (esp. since insurance companies will pay a Family M.D. considerably less than they would pay a specialist for the exact same procedure), and they have tons of staff they have to pay. If you like your doctor other than this one issue, I would stick it out with them b/c it sounds like they are practicing medicine responsibly.

I don't think I will be able to reccommend a doctor that will treat a whole family with antibiotics just because one member of the fam has strep, for example. Luckily I have never run across a doctor around here that does that...and if I did, I would run away and fast, not a good doctor for sure.

BELIEVE me!!I can feel your pain with the domino effect, when one gets sick everyone gets sick. Ugg!
A few years ago I did find a great solution to our problem though.
Our family sees Dr. Simmons of Personal MD in McKinney off Virginia and Jordan. Awesome guy, super doctor. Knows our family and has always gone above and beyond.

I'll try to explain how they work the best I can.
Let's say one of my kiddos gets sick with strep, they all get examined at the same time if they are all with me at that appointment, usually this is the case. However, if brothers A & B are absent during brother C's appointment, I could bring them in later that day to get checked or whenever.
Will they all get antibiotics if only one has it. No- but he will tell me to watch them and bring them back in if I am worried.

But, here is how Personal MD is different than other offices. We pay a lump sum every year for each kiddo. They have different plans for different family needs. We use the "Total Access" plan for the boys. It takes care of everything that Dr. Simmons can do in the office. Basically we pay the fee every year and we come in and see him whenever we need to. Walk in and walk out without paying anything else unless there was some odd labs that had to be run.
Caveat...They don't take insurance. But(taken from their site) "any fees that are generated as a result of being seen by a Personal M.D. physician can be applied to your out-of-network benefits plan."

Definitely worth a look, I know they have saved us a fortune and I love the fact that the doctor actually knows our family and cares about each of us.
Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
