The Junie B. Jones series is great, as is the Magic Tree House series. Both have girls as main characters, in Magic Tree House it is a brother and sister.
Good Morning All,
My niece's birthday is coming up and I would love to buy her some books. She turns 6 in June and there aren't many books in her home. I'm hoping to get some great book suggestions that may gear her towards developing a love for reading.
Thanks, Julia's Mom

Hi M.,
My daughter is 6 and her father just started ready
Junie B Jones books from Barns and Noble. My daughters loves them. They go from 1 - 25. I catch myself lisening when he reads them and I want to finish them too. LOL I think she may really would like these books. :)
Depends on whether you want picture books (to have read to her) or books SHE can read. I agree w/ Pinkalicious and the Fancy Nancy series, although they may be a bit too young now. My daughter (who also just turned 6) has had those books since she was 3. I've been reading her some chapter books like the Ramona the Pest series (you can buy a boxed set, which is nice). She also likes the Junie B Jones books and you can read a whole book to a child in 2 or 3 nights... Problem w/ Junie B Jones is that the grammar is poor - - written like a 6 year old would speak. So sometimes when I read it to her, I use the proper words...
Another great series of books which she can probably start to read herself are the books by Mo Willems... books like "There is a bird on your head" and "Watch me throw the ball." (the elephant and pig series books). She also loves Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.
Again, if she is, herself, learning to read, the Dr. Seuss type books are good. My daughter likes to read "They should put me in the zoo" and "the eye book." The print is easy to read and the rhymes are good and makes it easier for them to anticipate the words.
I friend suggested this to me (b/c her daughter got it as a gift) so I got it for my 7 year old niece and she loved it as well. I am sure a 6 year old would too....
Illustory (you can find it on amazon.com ) You create a story, mail it in and they bind it in hard cover form.
My daughter is 5 and we just started getting the Jamie Lee Curtis books. We like them all so far. She also likes Pinkalicous and anything by Karma Wilson.
I have heard good things about the Junie B books --I bought some for my niece when she was six. My kids are still little so I haven't personally read them yet. Junie B has some for specific ages by grade --specifically for a first grader etc.
good luck!
M.
Any of the Kevin Henkes books - Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Lily's Big Day, Chrysanthemum, A Weekend with Wendell, etc. I noticed Amazon has a boxed set of five of them.
Hi M.. I teach First Grade. Here are some suggestions for books that my students love:
Clifford
Little Critter
Arthur
Dr. Seuss
Any book by Eric Carle, Leo Leonni, Laura Numeroff, Pat Hutchins
My daughter is almost 5 and she loves the Amelia Bedelia series but her name is Amelia too!
They are great books for beginning readers as they have short sentences but she will just love the main character who is always taking things too literally!
It is a great series and you can get them in paperback. Good for you, reading is the best gift you can give any child!
Hey M.,
Why not take it a step farther,

Create a book club for her, she can make friends with other girls who like to read, and they can actually discuss them.
here is an amazon link for age apropriate books

Six is a great time to get started on the Magic Treehouse series, both of my kids loved these in grade school. Also, the Little House set would be a wonderful gift.
Enjoy your book shopping!
Fancy Nancy! My 5 yr old (will be 6 this summer) and All her friends LOVE them! The authors last name is O'Connell.
Also, saw someone else recomended Illastory...very cool!
Pinkalicious is a good book for that age group (your 3 year old may like also, even my son did).
The Junie B Jones series is good-Chapter books that can be read to her and easy reading if/when she's reading on her own. The main character is a spirited little girl. Quite entertaining with plenty of discussion opportunities.
for a 6 year old girl i dont think you can go wrong with the disney classics, all the princess/cinderella/little mermaid/beauty & the beast etc etc. also, if she doesnt have them, the knufflebunny books by mo willems are sooo cute and fun to read. one we just got that my kids love reading is skippyjon jones, so much fun. if she doesnt have a lot of books, i would go for the classics first, dr seuss, disney etc... the olivia books are great (falconer), the kissing hand (penn), chrysanthemum (henkes),,,, any of the eric carle books or leo lionni or anything by todd parr,,, the give a pig a pancake series is so cute and funny, anything by cynthia rylant....the list is just endless. great idea by the way :)

"Now We Are Six" by; A. A. Milne
As well as all these other wonderful books and book series that these wonderful moms have already listed. Happy reading!
When I was a teen and babysat a spirited 8yr. old boy, he sneaked out of bed, sat next to me on the couch and asked me what I was reading. I did not think he would be interested, but I began to read; "Little House on the Prairie" to him, and he ate it right up!!! He LOVED it! Loved the story, loved being read to and.... found out later that he told his parents that I was his 'girfriend' now. LOL! Kids love being read to! Enjoy every minute! D. N.
Hi M.! I'm a teacher and love books! I think Robert Munsch is a great author of funny silly books that kids her age just love to read over and over again. Check it out and maybe pick up the whole collection!
Hi M.,
My grandson is about the same age as your niece and he is an avid reader. I keep him supplied with books through Scholastic. Just hit up Scholastic.com and I'm almost sure that you will be able to find something that your niece will like. Good luck.
My niece is 8 (and a lower level reader) and loves the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books.
My 5 year old loves the Martha Speaks books and Max and Ruby. Olivia is a great character as well. I also loved Arthur by Marc Brown and the Curious George series.
