My son is 3 months old her has had a very hard cough for about 2 months now, he cannot sleep at night because he coughs so hard he cannot breath and gets very scared. When he breaths you can hear the build up in his chest. He has been to his pediatrician now 4 times he has had a chest ray and the doctor says it is just a cold. Is this normal?? I hate him being so miserable all the time.

What can I do next?

Hi H.,
My son used to get croup twice a year and it took awile for the coughing to go away. Is it just a cough? With such a small baby I would watch him carefully. Babies can get very sick in a small amount of time. Can he breate ok? If he is coughing and he can't breathe he may have croup. My son would get so scared because he would cough and not be able to breathe. I don't know how much this helped but good luck.
Chris

I would ask you Dr if it could be allergies. Or maybe asthma. Since it sounds like he might be coughing more at night. Maybe there is something in the air that is bothering him. I didnt know colds could last that long. Especially in babies. I hope everything works out ok for you.

Its not uncommon for a cold to last that long but I would ask your dr. if your son is to young for allergies, My oldest son and one of my daycare children suffer from indoor allergies so most of the winter they are miserable, coughing and sneezing all the time.

Hi H. -

Does your baby only cough at night? I bet it has something to do with the heat and dry air in your home. Do you have a humidifier? My son coughs a lot if the heat is on too high and my home is dry. Is your skin dry? Your nose?

That's what I'd dry. I bet that is very frustrating.
