Liver Problems in Dogs

Our black lab (our 'first-born') hasn't been eating since Saturday - he's been to the vet twice, and they've ruled out any tumors, but they still think that it's his liver. He could 'snap' out of it and get back to normal. Does anyone have any experience with their dogs having a health issue like this? We tried giving him diluted chicken broth per the vet to get his salt levels up, but he threw it up (he had some vomiting bouts last week, which I guess was the precursor to his current problems). I am scared of losing him, and I can't even imaging my husband's reaction if we lost him :( I just want to know the liklihood of him getting better after medication, or if I need to prepare for the worst. He'll be 7 in July, so he's still fairly young.

What can I do next?

Hi R.,
I am so sorry to hear about your doggy.
I can't relate exactly to your situation but mine's pretty close. My dog had a condition called pyometra which is a deadly uterine infection. When I took her to see the vet, I was for sure she had parvo because of how sick she had gotten. She was litterally lifeless!
She was sceduled for an emergency operation the next morning to have her uterus removed and just the surgery itself is very dangerous. I had really made up in my mind she was not going to make it with everything she was going through.
After the surgery she seemed to be doing alot better and we were able to take her home 2 days later. About 3 days after being home, she completely turned downhill and was right back in the vet. He said her body was now attacking itself and her body was being filled with toxins!
I was devastated! Everything she had gone through and now this! He started her on many different meds but straight out said, it's not likely she'll make it through this.

Well, I have to say thankfully she did! : ) However, I know this sounds gross but the toxins ate away her tongue and she has still learned on her own how to eat and drink and you would never know she ever went through something so dramatic. I feel like after seeing my dog go through this, anything is possible and definitely do not give up hope on your dog. I did give up hope on mine and I shouldn't have so you shouldn't either.
It's amazing how much they fight to live and like you said, your dog could just snap out of it anytime and be just fine!

My dog turned 7 last June and this all happened to her last October so they are very close in age.
I bet your dog still has alot of years left so just keep him in your prayers and I wouldn't prepare for the worse if I were you. Stay strong for him and your family. I know how hard it is to go through tough times like you are.

Hang in there and let me know how everything goes. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Hi R.,
I was a vet tech for about 11 years and we would see dogs go into a spell of not eating and or vomiting. Most times it was because the dog had eaten something and became "toxic". The liver is a very forgiving organ and able to regenerate after recovery. It is how ever important that he is getting some nutrients to sustain life. Dogs can go for days without eating solid food but must have fluids. (Have you tried ice chips)
If he is dehydrated and unable to eat he would need to have an IV and get re hydrated. The fluids would serve two proposes, to rehydrate and flush the toxins out thus making him feel better and eat.
Unless your dog has some underlying disease that is causing this condition your dog should be fine with proper care. I would also suggest a complete blood profile to see where he stands if that has not already taken place.
Hope he gets better soon.

I been where you are. Maybe some baby food? 1st or 2nd turkey or chicken. Baked chicken? White rice is pretty bland.
If they're giving medication, that's a good sign. My whippet died from liver failure and there was not anything (meds.) that could be done.
Keeping my paws crossed.

Hello R.,

So sorry to hear about your dog. My best friend has two collies and about 2 weeks ago they were very sick with diarreah and would not eat, the vet gave her some medication to give to the dogs and the medication did not help. My friend went to a web site called ShirleysWellnessCafe.com and did some research and asked questions on there about her dog, she also listed the problems with the dogs and she found some very good remedies for them and tried them and low and behold the dogs are doing much better. I know it wasn't liver problems like your dog but maybe this website will help you and your dog. Doesn't hurt to try. Good luck and God Bless. I will be praying for your dog.
