Licky Licky, Chew Chew Chew, Swallow

Mamas & Papas-

My aunt, who is the mother of three, and grandmother to 8, and always a favorite of mine, introduced this expression to our somewhat finicky DS- licky licky, chew chew chew, swallow. It is genious. It gets food into his mouth, where he might actually give it a taste rather than reject it outright, as he is contrarian.

Do you have any such clever expressions? Do you find that sometimes, learning comes easier when at the loving hand of someone else?

I'm going to be honest....this "clever expression" sounds really annoying and sort of gross.

I stopped telling my kids "you have to at least try it," and started calling them into the kitchen while I was cooking to "taste test" things. It was strange and amazing how much more they were willing to eat when they thought that they were a part of the cooking process.

Our 4 year old gets told, the green beans (or whatever food) are sad! They want to go to the party in your tummy! Sometimes the green beans beg to go to the party. Insert sad high pitched voice, We want to go to the party tooooooo! She giggles and then eats them. (Taken from some cartoon we saw once)

I agree with Christy. The title made me thing of the messages my sister and I send back and forth about annoying habits coworkers have...such as horrible table manners.

My kids cook with me, so they try as we go along. I do make them try things, but rarely is it me putting it on a plate and force feeding them. They are also all really good about eating most everything.

Sorry - that kinda sounds gross! I don't want my kids licking their food...unless it's a Popsicle or something that is supposed to be licked.

Why not have your child come in and HELP you fix dinner? Maybe be your official taste tester?

Sorry - with 3 kids - I've NEVER had a picky eater and truly don't understand why kids are allowed to get away with stuff like this. You're not a short order cook are you? So why let your son treat you that way?

Sorry - I digressed....nope...no clever expressions that come to mind right now....not that applies to food....the typical if at first you don't succeed....all the old wives tales come up...but not for eating...

Good luck!

2kidmama,

That's from Yo Gabba Gabba. The song is "There's a Party in my Tummy, a Party, a Party." My kiddos haven't actually seen the show, but I googled the specific song. I just sang that the other day to get my kiddo to eat her lima beans. Oddly, it worked.

"There's a party in my tummy, so yummy, so yummy." Oye, my 3 year old has been a fan of Yo Gabba Gabba for a while now. There's also one that says "Don't bite your friends.". While I find the show crazy annoying.....the songs work.

Thomas the Tank Engine brought you the green beans, honey. If you don't eat them, what will Thomas do with them? That worked.

I called broccoli "trees" and then he was willing to eat them...loved that one!

All I can think of is "open your mouth and close your eyes, and you'll get a big surprise".

But...if people think your licky licky phrase sounds gross, I don't think mine is any better!!

For a second I thought you were describing the LOUD eating habits of a former co-worker of mine...

I don't have an clever expressions, but yes, I definitely think learning comes easier when it's done with love.. This even includes school. whereby, in some cases, if a student felt more support , they might be more apt to raise their hand and speak up..

I clicked on this one because I thought it was going to be about something gross, possibly with a little TMI. That expression almost sounded dirty to me. Hahaha! Yeah, as far as other ones? I got nothing.
