Lexapro and Breast Feeding

I've been on Lexapro before each of my (3) pregnancies but stopped taking it while pregnant and breast feeding, however my OB dr. and I feel that I need a small dose (10mg) now. My baby is 8 weeks old and I've been told by physicians that if it is excreted in breast milk, the side effects are minimal to babies. Has anyone been on Lexapro for anxiety, while nursing? What sort of effect if any did you notice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I started taking the lexapro last night. My husband's job has been stressful and it seems that I get the brunt of it when he comes home so I felt that I needed this just to take the edge off (I'm typically an overly sensitive person anyway) so that I don't act out towards my little ones (I tend to be a bit harder on my 3 yr. old). All of your life experiences and advice really helped in making my decision easier - THANK-YOU!!! Even after reading the statistics, blah, blah...your advice was what made me see that the minimal side effects are much better than going through life with anxiety or depression.

I took Lexipro while while I nursed my son. The only real side effect was that my son sometimes would seem drowsy. He would sometimes take really long naps but once he got to be a few months old it didn't seem like he napped at all. I looked at it as I could be a better mom to my son if I took the pills verses not taking them and feeling blue and crying every time my son did. Good luck

I've been on antidepressants for about 7 years, and though it was a hard deceision in the beginning, I now know there's no way I want to go back to the way my life was before. I have two healthy boys and am pg with #3. I have been on the meds during all my pregnancies and while nursing; I started on Zoloft but had some trouble post-partum with #1 and switched to Wellbutrin. I check in regularly with my psychiatrist and my OB and have been reassured to the degree that I need (I know there's no 100% reassurance) that it's okay. I know myself, and I know I'm a better person and a better mom when I'm on medication. And I'd rather take a medication that has a slight chance of being passed on (and the only side effect I was told of if it is was jitteriness) than be the sad, unreliable mom I know I would be if I were to stop the medication. It's a personal decision and often not an easy one, but I'm happy with the one I've made.

I took it for a year at very low dosage (10 mg) while nursing, at which time I was able to go off it. I never had any problems and my daughter is now a thriving, precocious 4 year old! Don't worry! My daughter was a normal infant that hit all her milestone early and wasn't particularly cranky (actually she was happier and more laid back as an infant than my son) or sleepy.

Hi - I was on celexa which is an earlier version of Lexapro while pregnant and breastfeeding my son. Hi is fine but he was always a cranky baby. He is developing normally but does seem to have anxiety problems which I think are due to his personality and gene makeup rather than the med since I didn't notice any difference between when he was breastfeeding and after. He is 2 1/2 now

I was on 40mg of Lexapro during my pregnancy and after during breastfeeding for almost a year. My psychiatrist and I agreed to stay on the Lexapro because of my history of major depression and anxiety. Not only did I NOT notice any side effects, even at a larger dose, in my newborn son from nursing, I avoided the dreaded postpartum depression, to my great surprise. In my case, any risk (which has never been clinically proven)was minimal compared to keeping ME sane and normal and able to properly care for my new son.

I was on Zoloft during all 3 of my pregnancies and while breastfeeding. I was told there were minimal side effects as well, but one truly never knows. I just know the side effects of me being off it were far more detrimental than being on it. I stayed at 150/mg the entire time (have been on this dose, and still am, for 10 years) and so far so good (oldest child is 5 years and youngest is 3 months).

with my first child i got on Celexa while i was pregers. and i was on it nursing as well after i gave birth and i didn't notice anything. If your doctor says its ok....its ok, oh and one more thing to ponder.... if you could stop during pregnancy and breastfeeding....maybe you didn't need it any longer. at some point you won't need it, but you will never find out until you get off of it. now i understand about being on it now being postpartum but, its something to think of....depression,weight gain, problems sleeping, lack of sexual desire, irritability, and difficulty concentrating are all signs of a HORMONAL imbalance. You could also try a hormone balancing cream like the natural Prolief from Arbonne. Just a thought. I know a woman who could get off of Zoloft after her pregnancy because of the cream. Good luck
