Left Bmilk Out Still Good?

I'm so sad. I forgot to put my pumped bmilk in the fridge when I came home from work yesterday. I realized it when I was cleaning up today. I had it in a cooler with a frozen pack from 5 p.m yesterday until noon today. The cold pack and bottles didn't feel cold anymore. Do I have to dump my liquid gold??? Oh, someone please tell me it's still ok to stick it in the fridge and use it. I don't want to dump it, but I don't want to give spoiled milk to the baby.

I am so upset at myself! I got so busy and exhausted yesterday that I forgot all about it!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the comments. I am dumping it out to be on the safe side =( Won't make that mistake again! OH, (sob), it is so upsetting to do. The lesson I learned is to slow down and not try to do so much that I forget the important things.

Thanks for all the feedback though! This was my first blog and I just loved the quick response.

Breastmilk is actually sterile and I have read it is good to sit out for 10hrs. (straight from the breast). I have left mine out overnight on accident and put it in the fridge the next morning and used it. None of my 3 have ever had some weird reaction or gotten sick etc. I'd use it but that's just me....

I think you could do a taste test to see if it's gone bad. You could also contact La Leche League. I know they have a set of safe storage guidelines.

I think I would be dumping it...I know you hate to waste it but better that than to make that little one sick!! There is so much conflicting advice here...4 hours...10 hours...overnight....I would just dump it. Contact a local Le Leche League for some definitive advice in case it happens again

I, too, have heard that it's ok to leave it out for several hours, but 5 pm to noon the next day is a long time. So sorry, but I think it should be dumped. ):

I am sorry to say it is most likely bad. A general rule of thumb is that breast milk like cows milk smells when it is bad. If you ever have taken a wiff breast milk has no real smell when it is fresh, or even been thawed. I wouldn't take any chances, it will give your baby a real tummy ache and she probably will refuse it.

You can always give it a taste test... but most likely, you will need to dump it... I am so sorry. I know how hard that has got to be!

That sucks... I personally would dump it. From what I remember, you should only leave it out 1-2 hours.

I feel your pain. Once I pumped an 8 oz bottle. As I was taking it into the kitchen to put it in the fridge, I dropped it! All 8 ozs gone. I was so upset I cried! www.kellymom.com has a great page about breastmilk storage, how long you can keep it at what temperature etc. It's a great resource, fyi.

Do you have a kitty that would enjoy it? I know they can digest even sour milk. It's an idea. Kymberli

I think it's good for 10 hours left out straight from the breast or once it's been cold. I don't think it's good to re-refrigerate after it's been sitting out. I would dump it, I know it's liquid gold but the good thing is you have more where that came from, :-).

Anything that has been at room temp has the opportunity to grow bad bacteria. It is important never to feed a child anything that has sat in the temperature( Danger zone 41 degrees F to 135 degrees F) you have a TOTAL of 6 hours to consume it safely. So if you left something out for 3 hourse one day and then reheated it and left it for another 3 hours the next time even if there are left overs you should pitch it. That goes for cheese, fruit, meat, grains, noodles, lunch meat and that cup of milk your 2 year old has been drinking all day. Its best to fully wash anything that had milk in it to. The bacteria from the old milk can carry over to the new even with a good rinse. And when reheating anything in the microwave you must reheat to about 165 degrees F. These are the guidelines in the Serve Safe laws for most states. If you google Serve Safe you can access some of this information.

Sorry to say, you are going to have to dump it. If its not cold, not a good sign. And that is a long time.
Just dump it and remember its better to dump it then to get your angel sick.
And...there is more where that came from!
