When we moved into the place we are living now we couldn't fit our big leather couch through the door ways, it was only going to fit through one large window we have...at the time no one wanted to bother with removing the whole window to get this couch in so we sold it to my sister. We started looking for another set recently and were going to go w/ a sectional but my husband suggested we get our couch back from my sister as they are not using it. It worked out and we got the couch back...problem is, it smells so badly of smoke as they used to smoke in their home. Is there any kind of leather spray or cleaner that can be suggested to help get this horrible smell out of the couch? Thanks much :)

What can I do next?

A couple cleaners come to mind...Rustic Touch is a great cleaner for leather furniture but SOL-U-MEL is a miracle cleaner. SOL-U-MEL can be mixed with water and sprayed on as an air freshener and order remover. It is safe to spray directly on the leather couch to eliminate orders.

Murphy's Oil Soap comes in a spray bottle-you might try that. Any chance you could keep it outside for a few days first?

Hi J., I use Basic H2, a non-toxic cleaner from Shaklee. Pour 1/4 tsp. of concentrated Basic H2 into a spray bottle filled with 16 oz. of water. Spray the coach, then wipe clean. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before using. If you would like some of this cleaner, I do happen to be a distributor; so go to my website (www.emilytaft.com) & order it from there if you wish. If you live nearby, you can also contact me to bring it to you as I have some on hand. I am in Georgetown. Hope this info is helpful for your problem. Feel free to contact me with any questions also. We had a house fire, so I learned some "tricks" from the pros:

Anything you can put in the washing machine, add a can of regular Coca-Cola (NOT sugar free) to the laundry along with your laundry soap. This removes the smell from clothes & other washables. For wood furniture, use ammonia, for counter tops, use Dow scrubbing bubbles (or another foaming bathroom spray) . One of the best things that cleans MANY things is a dry-cleaning sponge (see below).

But the absolute best thing you can do is to rent an ozone machine. Start it running, then leave the house. Keep it 2 days & move it to different parts of the house. Our house was a huge 5 bedroom 3 bathroom two-story & in the 2 days we had the (large) Ozone machine, it removed ALL TRACES of smoke odor from our house including INSIDE the upholstered furniture & the wall to wall carpeting. I couldn't believe it! An Ozone machine removes oxygen from the room, so either leave the house or go to another part of the house with a window cracked in the room you're in. Don't run the ozone machine while you sleep!
An ozone machine is worth it's weight in gold after a house fire! (rent one at any rental store. Call around prices differ)

Hi J.,

I've had great results from a product called S.O.S (smoke, odor, stain eliminator) It's not only effective but I love the fact that it's enzyme-based and earth-friendly. I ordered a pair of leather shoes from Ebay and quickly realized that they came from a smoker's home. I sprayed them with SOS and it worked wonders! It also works well as a stain-remover . I keep a bottle in the bathroom and it sure comes in handy. ;-)
