I have really been wanting to learn how to monogram. But I don't know where to start. I don't know how to do it and don't know what kind of machine to buy. I'm 3 months pregnant. I would love to be able to learn how to monogram and make some money on the side. Anyone know much about this? Can you give me some advice and pointers?

What can I do next?

i started out with the $400.00 brother machine...i am limited to size but it is perfect for what i needed it for.

I would suggest starting small and that is about the cheapest machine you will get that will produce quality stuff... a friend got one cheaper than me (forgot who made it) and it was not even worth $10.00.

that is my .02 HTH and good luck

Hi, I have been sewing for a long time and I just bought my second embroidery machine. This time I got the professional one to make a little bit of money. The best thing to do is to find a dealer in your area that sells good quality machine. That way you can get lessons and service. Embroidery machines can be expensive but can pay for themselves if you get enough business. Brother makes great embroidery machines. Here is there website:

Go to the Dealer Locator and type in your zip code.

Good luck, I love my machine.

The best place to start would be to find a fabric or a sewing machine store near you. Either place should be able to give you lots of information on monogramming. Some of these stores even offer classes on using the machines, as well as other crafting classes. Just be prepared, the last time I priced monogramming machine the cheapest I could find was about $500.00. The better quality machines can run much higher. But if you are serious about doing this for a living I would definetly consider one of the higher quality machines. It will pay for itself in the long run.

I agree with the other post. Monogramming machines are very expensive. You could search for shops who may be going out of business. You could call shops and ask if they are planning to upgrade their equipment soon. Call every shop within a 150 mile radius. Driving 150 miles isn't too bad if you get a great deal on a monogramming machine.

Other thing you could consider is getting a part-time temporary job at a shop. You could exchange your services for the experience (be an intern). I highly suggest this before you jump in and purchase the equipment.

Monogramming is very popular right now. Look at the catalogs, pottery barn and Lillian Vernon, to get some ideas. The only drawback is that it will go out of style wihtin a couple of years. You will then have a very expensive machine you can't sell.
