LeapFrog---Tag & Leapster2

Today I went shopping and couldn't decide between buying my son a LeapFrog Tag system or the Leapster2, so I got them both. All along I'd planned to get my son only one of them, and I'm sticking to that, which means that one of them has to go back. But deciding which one, well, that's where I need your help.

Both systems are recommended for ages 4-8. I'm usually pretty loyal to recommended ages, but my son is 3 and very smart, so I'm hoping either one would work for him. Please tell me if you feel that one is better for younger kids than the other. I'd also like to know your experiences with either (or both) of these systems...your child's age, how they like it, how YOU feel about it, and anything else you think would be helpful for me to know.

Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

I don't know anything about the Tag system, but my daughter got her first Leapster when she was 3 as well, and it's been the best thing ever. It keeps her busy at restaurants when we're waiting for food and has a ton of different games (in fact, her cousins and her faught so much over the system that we had to get each their own). Anyway, she finally wore out her first one not too long ago and got a replacement one from grandma for her 6th birthday and she STILL can't put it down. It's the only toy that hasn't been put aside shortly after her getting it. I highly recommend it!

I have a 4 yr old ( just turned 4 in Nov). We have had a leapster2 since the summer and she LOVES it. We recently flew to visit friends and she played it one whole leg of the flight. I have the TAG for her for Christmas. She loves books and I know she will also love the TAG. I had the same debate with myself this summer and ended up with the Leapster and haven't been sorry.
Good luck!

We bought our daughter (just turned 4 in Oct) the LeapFrog Tag system. Our daughter has her own computer loaded with tons of educational games already, so we purchased the tag system as she's starting to read books on her own and she also likes to play school and read to her class.

I think choosing one just depends on your son's interest (reading vs interactive computer). You can't go wrong wtih either system. I think both systems are great!

My son has the leapfrog tag system and he loves it he is three years old and he sit and play it for sometimes hours The great thing I like about it is that you have three levels so if you son is smart he could start at the 2nd level my son is on the frist level but he likes to try his hand at the 3rd level.

My daughter is 4 and she chose the tag system after playing them both in the store. She's not into video games/ computer stuff very much, but LOVES books. For her to have the books read aloud and play games with her and make noises is super cool and she plays with them several times a day for the past several months. I think knowing if your child is inclined towards one type of media or another can help the decision making process.

For a 3 year old, my vote is the Leapster. I think he will enjoy it more and get more out of it. The Tag is more to help them read and is limited to the books made for it. The Leapster has lots of games that are educational in different ways. Plus - he can even play with it without a game in it! My daughter has the Leapster (not the Leapster2 b/c that one just came out) but I have read that with the Leapster2, you can connect the system to your computer and see what the child has been doing, learning, etc.
By the way - the games for the Leapster are normally $24.99 - but are on sale at Target until the end of today for $15!! This is the only time of year that I have ever seen them on sale. =)
I would take back the Tag and maybe get him that next year. The Leapster2 will be much better for him now!
Good Luck =)

We have a leapster and are moving to a DS this year (she is now 7). We have loved the leapster. My sisters boys have had leapsters for a few years and they LOVE them. They take them everywhere and have had hours of fun with them. The have also given mommy lots of peaceful times in the car and at the doctor and other appointments. Good luck deciding.

I am not a video game advocate by any means, but I did buy my son the Leapster system and he loves it. He's working on spelling and basic math and seems to love the system and it's games, even if he's too young for the games. My 22 month old likes it too. She watches "Letter Factory" and has been almost 100% on letter recognition for 3 or 4 months. Our household may not have a Wii or a PS but Leapster we do, and I think is a good investment.
