So, my daughter seems to be leaking through her diapers during the night. Is there anything I can do to help prevent it? I feel so awful - she wakes up just drenched. Please help! Any diaper brands that do a better job than others?? Right now we are using Pampers!!!!
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We actually tried Luvs and a size bigger last night and there was no Leaks!!!! Thank goodness.

We use Luvs and rarely ever have a problem with leaking. I've also read before that people with this issue put a pair of plastic training pants over their baby's diaper at night and that caught anything that leaked out of the diaper and kept the pj's dry. Hope this helps!

I used to change my kids when I put them down, and then again, before I went to bed, and then again first thing
in the morning when my husband left. That was the only way to solve it for us. I know that diapers are not what they used to be. You may try plastic pants over top. Good luck....

Try a larger size at night. Sometimes that just does the trick. If she will sleep through a 11 pm diaper change, you may try that too.

Hi S.,
My oldest would wake up drenched too. First we would not give her any juice or milk aleast one hour before bed. Then we moved her up a diaper size. We also used Pampers and swithed to Huggies. Because Huggies just holds more than Pampers. By cutting her back and upping her diaper size it put a stop to it. If we started having problems again. We had to think about how much she had to drink the night before. If she didn't have that much and it happen twice more, then we move her up another size. Then it would stop. Hope this helps. M.

I seemed to have better results with the Huggies when my son was still in diapers. We used cotton diapers during the day but I'm about as sleepy as they come and wasn't about to do that at night so we just used the disposables at night and did not get into the guilt thing. As it turns out, being an older mom, I had to get up during the night myself to pee, so I'd just check my son's britches and change him too.
There's also no law against doubling up and using TWO diapers, although you might have to fold back the one diaper so that the absorbant side is used sort of as a double layer on top of the other diaper and use the "outside" diaper as the "wrap" to hold the whole mess together!
It really just depends - but if you or your husband are up in the night anyway, just check her and change if wet then. My son got used to having his pants changed and he basically stayed asleep...or I just changed him immediately after I nursed him... it varied!!
as he got older and not breastfeeding, we just cut back on the liquids he drank before bedtime and made sure he'd used the bathroom before he went to bed (like during the pottytraining time, which he started at about 18 months and was pretty much pottytrained by 2.5 years.

Try using the next size up at night. I had the same problem with my son and it worked great because there is more aborsorbant material the larger the diaper. Also I've found that Pampers work the best. It you want to save money Luvs are ok during the day but they aren't great for night. Also I don't think Huggies are worth the extra cost. They don't work any better then Pampers and they leave gel material on baby's skin. Believe me I have tried them all. I have 3 boys 13, 7, and 1. I best diapers I have ever found for the price is Snuggems but I haven't seen them in a while. BTW I live in Belleville too and have a 1 year old so if you hear about any good baby activities in the area let me know.

you could try a smaller diaper size. i always use the ones that they are on the bigger end of the suggested weight for so that they fit more snugly around the legs. The absorbency should be good enough in any of the major brands like pampers, luvs, and huggies, although we have always used huggies. i did notice that when they leaked it was because they weren't as snug, as when we had moved to a bigger size.
my sister would use a bigger than needed size because she thought she needed a lot of waist tab room to adjust the size there but i noticed that her son's diapers leaked an awful lot. i suggested she go with a smaller size to help with that and that worked for her too.
hope this helps,

I had the same problem with my oldest I went to Huggies and occationally I did use luvs. Pampers was the worse for him didn't seem to keep him dry as you said.
Also, I am not sure if you lay her down with a bottle or not but if you do I recommend you not. You give her the bottle and then about a hour later change her. I started doing this with him and giving him a little cereal by spoon right before bed and he was held over and dry a lot better. You have to understand though he is 20 now and he was a huge baby so they allowed me to give him a little cereal when he came home from hospital. Talk with you doctor if she isn't on cereal already. Giving her the bottle a hour before bed gives her time to go to the bathroom before laying her down. If she is like him the wetting through woke him up.

In addition to Huggies Overnights (work great for us right now) you could use the plastic training pants to help contain the leaks so at least all of her isn't getting soaked. As she is drinking less milk (depending on age of course) close to bedtime and overnight, that should help too! Good Luck!

I found that Huggies are great for the overnight diaper. I used all kinds with my last one and Huggies worked the best. Try the overnight style just for night time and make sure the top is tight around her waist. You might be getting them too big for her. If you go online to the Huggies website and sign up for coupons it will help with the extra cost of this brand. But you will save time on cleaning sheets and clothes.
I hated leaky diapers. I bet it is just the size being wrong and not fitting properly. My kids were long and had skinny butts so I had to stick with the smaller diapers a lot longer.
Good Luck and get some of those absorbant pads so you don't have to do too much laundry.

This post hits SO close to home - we're going through the same thing right now! I know a few months ago when we had this problem, I just needed to go up a size. So, you may try that.
This time for us, however, it's not a size problem ... it appears to be an overflow problem. Huggies worked great with my oldest daughters, but they're a problem for the newbie. Luvs have been holding up through the night and I haven't tried Pampers since she was super small. So. If you find the answer to this perplexing (and MESSY) problem, please let me know!!
Thanks for posting this question and my best wishes for peaceful and dry nights! ;)

Hi S.,
different brands fit babies differently
but you might try huggies or you might try going up a size. I know that on the diapers they say for recommended weight such and sych but some babies are built different then others. My youngest is 16 months is around 20 pounds give or take and she is in a size 4 huggies, she was wearing pampers size 4 but they were to small, we tried 5's but they were way to big.
I always went by my childs belly button, if I could see it then it was time to move up a size in diapers.
Another one is when you lay it underneath them and you go to pull the front over their belly and the bottom comes out at the sametime. Time to move up a diaper size.

All 3 of my kids were allergic to huggies and we just didn't like pampers so always used luvs. They don't tear up so bad that the gel is all over their bodies when they drench them. They are the best brand out there in my opinion and have heard other mom's say that as well. I haven't found anyone that had babies that were allergic to luvs either and luvs are cheaper. I always gave my kids a bottle before bedtime until they were about 1, so during those times I would use a nighttime diaper and put an insert in to catch extra heavy episodes. Once I stopped the bedtime bottle, or cut back on the # of ounces at bedtime, I was able to go with just the nighttime diaper. Good luck!

I have the same problem with my DD. I tried Huggies, then Pampers, briefly, but the best diapers I've found are Target brand! They're really absorbent and about 1/2 the price. Even with the more absorbent diapers, though, DD sometimes would soak through at night. Then I started putting an "overnight" maxi pad in her night time diaper. That works incredibly well. Instead of soaking through an average of once a week, it's more like an average of once every 6-8 weeks.

Try costco kirkland brand - both of my girls wore them. My 7 month old does the same thing at night but they do good. We usually do a changing at 11pm and 5 am to avoid changing all of the bedding every day too.

You may want to try Huggies. I used them entire time my son was in diapers & I never had that problem. Good luck & God Bless!

My usual sign of moving up in size of diapers is when my son leaks at nap or at night. That is usually the que for us. Pampers really is the only brand that will actually work with us until he has out grown that size. I would try moving up a size. Also, another good guideline to go by is the weight on the packages. As soon as my son would hit the minimum weight of a diaper size we would switch to that next size. So for instance, my son was in newborn (I believe 8lbs - 12lbs) however #1 size is from (I believe 11lbs - 15lbs...this is a guess), I would switch as soon as he would hit 11lbs to the #1's even thought it still said he was okay for newborns. This helped prevent wetting out of the diaper.
good luck!

congradulations on your first, I'm mom of three had the same problems with the diaper deal. my first child (16 now) i did use pampers and had no problems. so when i had #2 (now 4) i started with pampers and did not have any luck. We went to huggies and they WORK. Every once in a while i would buy other brands just to check them out but always went back to huggies. And with baby #3(now 2) we still are using them. but some times nothing works good luck

I do daycare and all but one of my parents use pampers and we haven't had any problem. What I would suggest if she goes down to sleep before you is change her again before you go to bed. The one family I care for uses huggies and oh my they stink they are always leaking, we used loves when my son was a baby but that was 12 years ago and things have changed very much over those 12 years. I would just make sure you change her, has her intake on breastmilk/formula changed at all? That could be the reason for the leakage also.

My son did the same. Try the overnight diapers with Micky Mouse on them. They do a great job, and he wakes up dry!

I agree with all the other ladies who recommend Huggies. Diapers are one item where you get what you pay for. We've tried other brands but always return to Huggies. LUVs seem to work okay as far as leaking but they have such an annoying scent.

Try putting your daughter in one size bigger diapers during the night, that solved the problem at our house! FYI, we use pampers and that was the only problem we had, leaking at night and using one size larger fixed it.

I had that problem as well unless we used Luvs. I made sure to change my daughter right before she went to bed and rarely had a problem.

I used Huggies Overnight diapers with my oldest son when we starated having this problem. They are more absorbant than a regular diaper - I don't think he ever leaked through one of the overnight diapers. They used to be in a purple package, I'm not sure if they still are or not. Hope this helps!

I use Luvs, and love them, have never had a leakage problem, and they are cheaper than Huggies and Pampers. I think Pampers also makes an overnight diaper you could try.

Hey S.,
My daughter is 14 months old and was going through the same thing. A friend of mine said to get her the overnight diapers, she had done so for her son and no more accidents!!
I went to Walmart and got some and have been using them at night and no more leaks at all!!!! They are kind of pricey but I only use one a night and they work SO well I think they are definately worth it! Good luck!

I loved Pampers when you bring baby right home but after that is was all Huggies for us...nothing else seemed to keep them dry at night. We're 3 & 5 now and still use the Huggies nightimes to stay dry.
If you are looking for deals on them go to either Sam's or watch for coupons at your local ToyRUs or BabyRUs. Another "off brand" diaper that worked for us was the ToyRUs or BabyRUs brand...don't remember what the name of it was but it was a blue & yellow box and was fairly inexpensive. Never found Luvs to work on my kids (one skinny and the other chubby) unless you are sending them to daycare and they change them right after they wet once.
Congratulations on your new arrival.

Well I have found that at least for us Luvs seem to work a little better. I would also suggest limiting her fluid intake if you can right before bed and we also had to use a mattress pad right under where the baby sleeps. We put it on top of the sheet and it caught all the mess. Good luck!!!

When my son was a little younger the only diaper I could find that worked on him was Huggies Supreme. They are well worth the money even if you only use them at night. I know that for our next child that is what I will stock up on. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem with my daughter. We ran into a woman in the diaper aisle at the store who looked at us like we were crazy to buy Pampers and told us that Huggies were the reason that her daughter slept through the night b/c she was dry and not leaky. There was instant improvement.

My husband has always insisted on using Huggies Supreme diapers. I protested at first bc of the cost. However, we have saved so much in laundry detergent and sleep that it has been worth it. I have never had to change a crib sheet due to a leaky diaper in all of his 13 months. Give them a try.

My son had this problem! It turned out he was too tall for his size of diaper. We purchased the next size up, closed them snug around his waist, and he was fine after that. We also had a good experience using "Huggies Overnights."
